What encoder board should I use?

Recommended Posts

I'm preparing the parts for my first arcade

I'm looking for good push buttons and I found this kit: http://www.amazon.com/Easyget-Cabinet-Raspberry-RetroPie-Projects/dp/B01DKAGJZQ?ie=UTF8&colid=36OA3VJFMKL7U&coliid=I2B0WMNLGVZ3AC&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl

This kit already comes with a encoder board that I don't know if it is good

Should I buy this Kit with this kind of encoder board or should I use a board like IPac by ultimarc?

Most like the ipac. RocketLaucher has additional features for it and HS/RL/MAME all use keyboard type command by default and so does the ipac.

The buttons in the picture look like they are snap-in type for a metal panel. Are you using a metal panel? For a wooden panel you would want longer buttons (for 3/4" wood) with nuts. I would also think you would want more than 16 buttons. 16 seems like the bare minimum and you should consider admin buttons to make control easier for others and provide additional features.

I personally would spend the few extra bucks and buy the pieces separately instead of a kit so you can get exactly what you want. You'll have a decent amount of time and money it to this so you shouldn't cut corners on the controls.

ipac = $40

joystick x 2 = $50

buttons x 24 = $50

wire & connectors = $10

total = $150

iPac. And I wouldn't buy that kit. If you're building a cab do it right from the beginning. Use good parts otherwise what's the point?

Buy your parts from one of the actual arcade control stores.

What about the sanwa buttons? I want good buttons for fighting games

Can you give me the address of these arcade stores? I don't live in USA so I need to find stores which delivers fast and accept international credit cards.

www.ultimarc.com

that's where you can get the various iPacs and really good gear such as rotary joysticks, U360's pre-wired LED harnesses, Ultralux buttons etc.... In the UK I believe.

www.groovygamegear.com

Haven't used them myself, but the word seems good. This is where you get the cool coin slot buttons. Different LED packages than Ultimarc.

www.paradisearcadeshop.com

Not sure about this one...

Sanwa buttons are great (sizing is a bit odd if I remember right?...) as will be the other major/good brands.

Just stay away from cheap sh***** Ebay and Amazon knock-off crap.

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought a similar kit from ebay for my first build.  It's okay.  Nothing wrong with it. It work.  I gotta say it's hard to do or build everything right the first time around.  That's why on my second build, it got better.  Mainly from what to avoid from the first.

Never heard of them. Looks like they have some good stuff mixed in with some crap.

Didn't compare prices, but as long as you buy quality stuff you should be fine.

Their price are ok, they also sells ultimarc boards and deliver faster in USA.
