phantasy Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 This is sort of a niche audience... for the uninitiated, a lot of Sierra and LucasArts games had two ways to play them when it came to audio... regular game noise/music OR if you had a midi synthesizer (namely the Roland MT-32) you could make the games that were programed for it sound MUCH better both in music and sound effects. A lot of people still don't know about this wonderful emulator, Munt: Munt emulator page: http://www.sierrahelp.com/Utilities/Emulators/Munt.html Once setup, you can toggle your sound settings in emulators like ScummVM and Dosbox to work in tandem and use an emulated Roland MT-32. There are Youtube videos showing the sound differences between playing a game with and without the synth. More importantly perhaps, are youtube videos comparing Munt to a real (and expensive to replace) Roland. There is a negligible difference in sound if indeed at all! It's really that good! Phil'sComputerLab has great demonstration videos. Here is one for Secret of Monkey Island: Haven't done a whole setup yet- the steps SHOULD be to install Munt (you will need bios roms for a MT-32), set it up within the emulators and select it as audio playback device, then set the emulators up in RL and HS with your games. Those interested in this thread will HIGHLY enjoy Phil's videos about the MIST FPGA computer too... which comes in a version that will work with a real Roland midi!
dougan78 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 Rl module for dosbox has support for gravis ultrasound which I like better. Haven't set it all up yet though.
phantasy Posted October 1, 2016 Author Posted October 1, 2016 (Homer Simpson voice) - OOOOH! Haven't heard of that - going to look into that one. What about gravis do you like better?

For dos and win 3.x - just get the exo sets. Exo does an amazing job. Plus everything works great and plugs straight into RL. Sorted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What about gravis do you like better?Well I owned one and the sound was better the sound blaster as it is midi like Roland and rl has suppprt for it. So for me its a must have.

dougan78 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 I am pretty sure exodos is set to do sound blaster for sound or pc speaker depending on the game as that is what dosbox supports by default. Gravis ultrasound takes addition configuration per game as not all games support GUS. So I would guess mut would be the same. Good luck.
Yeuxkes Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 I guess GUS is easier to configure in Dosbox, you would only need one initial install and configure the setup/setsound for these games to use Gravis Ultrasound whereas for the MT-32 you would need to do the same thing and run Munt side by side with Dosbox otherwise you wouldn't hear any music. Support for both these sound devices is limited to some games, I think if you look at the module notes in Rlauncher you can find a link which games support GUS. As for the preference on which to use it all comes down to personal taste, it's the same with shaders. You cannot argue about something like that. In the end it all comes down to on what you prefer best yourself and is the easiest to run.
phantasy Posted October 2, 2016 Author Posted October 2, 2016 Well said! I just didn't know there were so many other options but not running emulators side by side is simpler.
