Neo Geo CD and booting up "properly".

Hey everyone,

So I have the Raine emulator all setup, and I even have it playing Neo Geo CD games wonderfully... or at least it plays "King of Fighters '94, The" very well. (I haven't tried anything else yet). So with that in mind, I know I have the proper BIOS and everything up and running...

Except... when I launch the game... it does just that. It launches straight into the game.

Now, if you're saying to yourself... "Ok, so what's the problem?" Then, you are forgetting something.... The boot sequence! It doesn't have the system startup :(

Imagine Dreamcast without the bouncing ball, PSX without that telltale sound and Sony logo...

How do I get this to play the boot sequence?

OR... or...

If Raine just isn't capable of doing this... what emulator is?

Try retroarch. There is a tutorial set by @Aorin in the libreto forum.

Philips CD-i - Does anyone actually have it working?

But you would have to have the roms in CHD format.

Yeah, there are a few tutorials I created some time ago in Libretro forums, they are really simple:

I'd love to use RetroArch, but I can't find the games in CHD format, despite my extensive searching. Obviously I can't just go around asking either lol

When in RetroArch though, do you get the bootup screen?

I'm pretty sure I went through it a couple times, my main problem is finding the games in CHD format. All I can locate are bin/cue.

Yes I have the boot screen before all NGCD games starts.

God I love RetroArch lol.

Alright, I'm gonna hit the search engines and see what I can dig up again lol.

Thanks for your input guys. Those boot screens are super important to me, and most people think It's lame I even care lol

Wasn't you in Libretro forums talking about Game Boy boot screens?

We have even Game Boy boot screens now on Retroarch!!!

Hahaha indeed I was, I was over there pushing for those for quite sometime until someone with the skills was able to implement it lol. Sadly I don't have the skills necessary to implement such things, but what I lack in skill I make up for in persistence.

I'm not sure at this point what else would be missing boot up screens.

Maybe CD-I via retroarch? I haven't set that up yet either.

I tried setting up that P-UAE core too to see if I could make it run Amiga CD32 games too... but I can't even get it to run normal Amiga 'cause I've got (what I think is) WHDload games. and I'll need to convert somethings first...

I know WinUAE has a bootscreen for the CD32, but I could never get that emulator to save my controls lol.

It's always something, eh?

But yeah, anyway... not sure what else is missing a bootup screen at this point.

CD-i has boot screens via Retroarch, not sure, but probably the standalone emulators probably has it as well.

P-UAE core doesn't work for me, I use WHD sets and will only use Retroarch to emulate Amiga when the core is updated to use WHD sets.

I don't know what we're missing, I have cart boots even for Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, some systems just don't have boot screens at all, like SNES, etc.

Yeah I dug deep to get the Genesis one, I searched for a LONG time to get the Game Gear one too because that only came up on some late-market game gears I guess, so it's pretty rare.

I found this guide for converting WHDload games for use in the P-AUE core, though the guy is using an Nvidia Shield I think it might still work:

I am still at work so I haven't been able to dig into this, maybe you would find it useful?

It's nice to have a way to convert them to P-AUE, I'll take a look later, I won't promise I'll take this route since this set is so huge.

Thanks for pointing it out, it can be useful for others as well.

Yeah no kidding, that romset is massive.

I'll probably just do the same thing I do with DOSbox and periodically take a single game out, convert it, and manually enter it into the wheel on HS.

Speaking of it being useful for others, is there somewhere better we can post that? lol I don't know how many people in need of the conversion for P-UAE WHDload games are gonna stumble through a thread on Neo Geo CD bootscreens XD XD XD

I haven't even touched ExoDOS yet, probably going for a best of and end up this way, I'm also planning something similar for Amiga.

Yeah you're right, you could create another topic here more focused on this WHD set conversion thing. Would be easier for others in need to find it.

Haven't tried, or heard of, ExoDos yet. I've just been using the RetroArch DosBox core. So far it's been great, because it shows the game loading in "DOS" so it's the closest equivalent to the bootscreen for that 'system'.

I'll play with that conversion tutorial tonight or this weekend and then make a more concise post.

So, basically, you've been using common DOS games and installing them via DOSBOX core in Retroarch? Amazing!

Is it easy?

Oh yeah, totally.

So, I have a set of Dos games that are all zipped up.
I will just unzip one to a directory like X:\Games\Microsoft MS-DOS\DOOM2
Then, I added the .exe extension to retroarch in RocketLauncher

I setup an XML with the executable's file name and the full name.
So in Doom 2's case

File: DOOM2
Description: DOOM II - Hell on Earth

Then I also had to change the core settings so that "CPU Cycles x 10000" = 2 and all the others = 0.

Other settings I changed were some core-specific override stuff so that ESC was no longer "Exit RetroArch" and stuff like that.

So far it's worked with all the DOOM and Wolfen games, though I don't have full sound support in WOLF3D so I need to check that.

Oh, that's another thing too, I had to "install" some of the DOS games, but I just did them to the same kind of directory like I did with Doom 2.

So in Wolfenstein 3D's case I installed it to X:\Games\Microsoft MS-DOS\WOLF3D

I tried setting up Day of the Tentacle as well, but apparently the DOSBox core doesn't have mouse support so I will need to try ScummVM... just haven't gotten around to...

I hope that all makes sense lol

It sounds simple, but, no mouse support for DOS?

The ExoDOS setup seems even easier than that, you could check DOSBOX notes on RLUI and see how it works.

That's great. In my case I use Retroarch with MAME core.

But they have to be CHD, or else they won't work. Not sure if MAME accepts more formats than the CHD.

I'm using MAME with the set i have (you know where :P). The set is based on bin/cue images. Not CHDs.

So, MAME works perfectly with bin/cue images.

lol yes I do, and  I still haven't turned off my PC. :)

So yeah, I see that MAME can run neogeo CD then. I will have it as my backup emulator, as I am using retroarch for that ;)

Ok, well I got a set of Neo Geo CD CHD's, and now they are launching in retroarc with that glorious boot screen.

My main issue now is I can't seem to configure and SAVE the configuration for the MAME controls within RA... so there's that snafu.

Plus, and I doubt it, anyone know a way to multiply the load speed? Raine was loading them way faster than this lol. I know the Neo CD is notorious for it's 1x loading speed. (I think the CDZ had a whopping 2x speed!) lol

The same for me, when you press F1 to go to the Retroarch setting, you go instead to the original MAME setup. I haven't changed the controll's buttons because I am using an arcade stick and it is ok the way it is.

I think this is because of the way this core was programmed.
