angryherbalist
Ok so I've got my consoles set pretty decently, now I'm treading into MAME. I have a romset, it's like 40gigs and its 0188u0 i believe. Of course, none of the things are named correctly. What's the best way to attack this romset to get it organized - named correctly, parsed down to English only releases, etc? Or is it best to just find alternative sources for individual MAME games, as I'd only want maybe 100-200 of them anyway...
32assassin
if they are not named correctly, then they will not work in MAME you either need to replace them or use Romcenter or CLRMAME to rename (a more correct term is rebuild) your roms). collecting individual MAME games is not a good idea because your rom sets need to match your MAME exe. if you try to use MAME exe veresion 0180 on your current 01888 rom set you might encounter some problems. if you only want 100-200 games, filter your MAME XML to only include the 100-200 games you want. if you do this then Hyperspin will only list the games you want listed. MAME has parent roms, if you delete a parent rom the sub set rom (game) will not work. example Pac-Man was originally released in Japan as Puckman if you delete the Puckman parent rom the US version of Pac-man will not work. you are better of trimming the fat out of your MAME XM as oppose to deleting MAME roms.. volumetric
If you've downloaded a full rom set, chances are they are named correctly for Mame, they won't be the actual proper game names. I can't imagine someone uploading a full set of incorrectly named roms. That would require a lot of work for no real reason.

angryherbalist
i found it. new XMLs are posted here: retrofe.nl/download by a user on this site.
angryherbalist
So I have the 0.188 XML list and i put it into Don's to ensure it is all named correctly, but Don's is looking inside the zip files so it isn't matching the roms correctly. Anyone know a fix?
adamg
Man, MAME is literally the easiest system there is. You should not rename anything. I do not know where you got these roms but MAME roms are NEVER NAMED INCORRECTLY! Unless someone is dicking with you, there is no reasone to do anything with the rom set. What I would suggest is go to ******* and download the torrent for 189. Make sure it is split as merged, though smlaller, has too many issues when you started filtering xmls. So with your split set and mame 189, you should be golden when it comes to roms. Since there is no reason to rename mame roms your set is probably fine. Can you post a screenshot of the folder you have your games in just so I can verify that they are fine?
angryherbalist
they are fine. i double checked them vs the xml. so now if someone could help me understand how i would handle mame and all the roms inside of hyperspin to make it more manageable, that would be awesome! so i'm going to take the xml that is like mame_no_casino_clones_mahjong_mature_quiz_utilities_playchoice.xml I would create a wheel and name it like "Arcade Classics" or something, then point it to the mame rom directory and use the xml above? then if i want to do a fighting MAME only, i could get an xml for that, point it to the same rom directory and emulator... correct?
