Contributing Scans

Hi guys,

I am tasked with processing the scans made by well known rom dumping team. The question came up as to whether our work would be fit for contribution here.

A main concern would be any file limitations or expectations by the community. Is there a specific resolution that works best, file type, (im assuming jpg) and file sizes?

Here is an example of what I am doing, some befor and after shots...

Those are resized to be more post friendly, so disregard any jpg artifacts you may notice...

Here is a close-up. I used spot healing and clone stamp to level the edge of the paper and remove the effects of entropy. I then applied S-curves the color channels to bring up the contrast and balance the colors. I may still need to tweak the color vibrancy a bit on this one, but its pretty good I think. if you notice the red dot pattern at the top of the image, after applying the adjustment layers, brings out the "cheese-cloth" patten quite nicely. That classic comic book dot pattern.

Yeah, in the HS Project we are always looking for good quality scans (more for some systems than others of course) so if you can help it would surely be appreciated. The higher resolution the better, but usually 300dpi is more than enough for our needs here.

Are you working on any specific systems?

I am using PS CS6 on scans @ 600dpi TIFF applied with layers to accomplish "non-destructive" editing. Then rendering 2 jpgs, one with height 800px (for use in front-end dats) and one with 350px height (for web-archive use). We may do a dat with the tiff files also.

I just finished working on our Capcom Play System III entries (only about 6 games in that one), I will be working on Mattel Hyperscan next.

As far as systems go its going to be just about everything, particularly optical based media.

Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, Amiga CD, Amiga CD32, Sega & Mega CD, Neo Geo CD, PCE & TG CD, CDi, CPS I,II,&III, Jaguar CD... just to name a few.

Definitely interested on some of those, if you have the cardboard boxes for CD32 we still need quite a few. We are also missing around 36 CD scans for PCE CD to complete our set, so any contributions would be more than welcome.

800px high is usually good enough for our needs if the artwork is already edited, we do try to keep the original source artwork at larger resolutions, but for the final sets that would be more than good.

Are you scanning the front and backs only or all box sides? Most similar projects usually don't scan the sides on cardboard boxes for example which makes creating 3D boxart much harder as you usually end up needing to recreate the spines from pictures.

I don't know what's your plan, if you want to scan everything or reuse already existing scans, but we already have plenty of artwork scans gathered.

its definitely a hit or miss with what we have available. Some things are disc only, some are complete, some are no disc and only art. http://database.trurip.org/ If we have a game in the db then chances are we have atleast some kind of art for it. When we do scan something we have strict guidelines and scan everything possible.

Maybe we can pool our resources and fill in some of our gaps! :)

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. I'd be interested on hearing more about the goals of your project as it sounds like being very close to at least part of what we are trying to do with the HS Project.

I'll pm you soon so we can exchange some details.
