nosacrifice Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Hi guys, I have been running HyperSpin for over a year now and LOVE IT. I have successfully configured MAME, 2600, Atari XL/XE, NES, SNES, N64,PS 1, Future Pinball and SEGA Genesis. So I decided to add the 5200 after Emu-movies released all the new video and intro files (the guys there and here should go down in history for their contributions to retro-gaming). Anyway, I am about to declare defeat. I cannot get MESS to work and after 3 days of trying, I am about done. I followed the instructions exactly, checked the Hyperlaunch script and don't know what else to do. When I go to launch the game, it does not give an error notice (I worked through all of the initial errors), the screen goes black and you can see the system start to load the game, but before it goes to 1% it returns to the HS interface. I'm tired of fighting it. SO... Does anyone have any suggestions, or had luck with another emulator for the 5200??? Thanks for taking the time to read, and i would truly appreciate any suggestions.
Kodiak Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Do you have the required bios images for MESS? Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.
nosacrifice Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 Oh yeah. BIOS, Rom directory, game directory, everything. I simply don't understand how it can be so difficult.
koolbrez67 Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Dude I made wheel and 3d box art for this system and I don't even use this system. It was a waste of time for me. If you have to have it use it but I configured and used it and there was a quick why did i waste my time. Really why ?
Fursphere Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Like kool said - just dump it. There is an obvious reason Atari went out of business in the early 80s....
blur Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 works out of the box for me though, i use ancient version of mess (127), cause i don't like this new ui thing i don't remember i had to do anything special - didn't change hyperlaunch script a bit, just configured all paths and put roms in right place (software/a5200) do you have mess working outside of hyperspin? TheTrout Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Does Mess work for anything else you have? 'Cause I use it for several systems. A few examples: ;**********************************ATARI 2600***********************************if (systemName = "Atari 2600" && (executable = "messpp.exe" || executable = "mess.exe")) { hideDesktop() Hotkey, %exitEmulatorKey%, CloseProcess RunWait, %executable% a2600 -cart "%romPath%%romName%%romExtension%", %emuPath%, Hide UseErrorLevel } ;****************************NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM**********************if (systemName = "Nintendo Entertainment System" && (executable = "messpp.exe" || executable = "mess.exe")) { hideDesktop() Hotkey, %exitEmulatorKey%, CloseProcess RunWait, %executable% nes -cart "%romPath%%romName%%romExtension%", %emuPath%, Hide UseErrorLevel } You also don't need your roms to be in a special folder, just the BIOS files. Make sure your BIOS are in the Mess "roms" directory and try playing a game from the command prompt, like this: C:\Mess\mess a2600 -cart "C:\Roms\2600\Bowling (USA).zip" Other than the command line, running Mess should be pretty much identical to running Mame. Just put your BIOS in "roms" and it should work out of the box (unless your BIOS roms, for some reason, are incorrect).
Tuti05 Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 yeah make sure you can use mess before you "mess" with it in hyperspin. MAme is difficult to get working when you just start out
i12b_band Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 ;**********************************ATARI 5200*********************************** if (systemName = "Atari 5200" && executable = "mess.exe" ) { hideDesktop() Hotkey, %exitEmulatorKey%, CloseProcess RunWait, %executable% a5200 -cart "%romPath%%romName%%romExtension%", %emuPath%, Hide UseErrorLevel } works for me on MESS 0.140b
irondragoon Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 It took about 10 minutes of monkeying around but I got 5200 working in HS. Personally, I thought getting Mess to play the games outside of HS was more difficult than getting HS to work with Mess. One important thing that looks like it hasn't been said, is if you change the name of your exe in your .ahk file you need to right click and recompile the script. I am using M.E.S.S. 0.141. For me, it is a matter of having working versions of games/systems I enjoyed as a kid. And I had a lot of fun with both the 5200 and the Atari 8 bit computer games (which I had no trouble setting up.) Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

What mine will do is launch to the Atari LOGO. However, down were it has the copyright info, the letters and numbers are jumbled, then after a few seconds the screen will go black. My script looks identical to yours, and I have the BIOS is a folder called ROMS. My games are in a folder named Atari 5200. I'm not a noob, have setup about 7 or 8 other emulators with Hyperspin with very little issue. I'm almost at the point of offering to send money to someone through Paypal to remote into my cabinet and look at the setup. It's not so much that I even want the games (which I do) it's just wanting to know what I am missing....any takers??? Thanks so much for your comments and thoughts. I do appreciate them, but I am still at square one.

Don't get me wrong I made the 5200 artwork for a friend that just loves the 5200 and the old Atari games. It comes down to is this for a cab or a media center gameing unit. Media center ya i could see people using it for a cab you say ya at first till you play it on a cab it just doesn't fit.
nosacrifice Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 Thanks man, appreciate it and i can see where you are coming from. I actually like playing my 2600 games on my cabinet. But I am still lost on the MESS thing. Really has me frustrated - probably just going to throw in the towel - I have more games than I will ever be able to play. By the way, I looked through your art stuff and it was very nice. Great work. Best wishes. PDG
tattoopete84 Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 Alternate method to set up mess, without using HyperLaunch. This can be used to setup MESS systems in HyperSpin that aren't supported by the Module. ie. Sony Pocketstation. Check it out> http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?30319-Boot-MESS-cart-Games-without-HyperLaunch-(in-HS)-amp-Remove-MESS-MAME-nag-screen My Professional Tattoo Portfolio: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.234510614736.131894.234499559736 My latest Free DJ mix download: https://soundcloud.com/insectorx/insector-x-invade-pensacola
bmosley Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 just to point out something that threw me off was that i think i was using certain Romset that didn't have the correct headers for MESS. Maybe I'm thinking of the 2600 but I remember one of them gave me a bit of a headache. Can't remember but Good5200 or something worked when no-intro didn't.. try that out
AYOOOB Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Does it works for you outside of hyperspin ?
