All systems go, except for Spectrum and C64 Keyboards

I've got the ZX Spectrum and C64 up and running and even played a few games last night. Quite the throw back to my childhood.

Herein lies a problem. It seems that the c64 and Spectrum keyboards differ, and often per each game. For example, Summer Games may have certain buttons, whereas Ghostbusters uses directional keys.

Spectrum (Skool Daze) uses O and P for left and right.

What is the best method for trying to solve this?

I've looked at the custom keyboard at the link below, but since I use a keymapper for joystick, I'm not sure if editing the kvm file will solve the issue

XPadder profiles and use the controller. At least that's the solution I came up with for the games I play.

Depends on what games u play. If joystick keys are on u cannot use those keys to type so o use 2 instaces of winvice. 1 with that enable and one with that not. Cant play goldbox games with out kb or txt adventires.

This is unfortunately what I as expecting.

So, what does one do if they have 30 games for c64 they want to play? 30 separate profiles?

Second quesiton, how would I know which buttons are in use for each Spectrum game?

This is going to take some community spirit and some thought and of course may even be underway ( I can't check the ftp right now.)

Could per game xpadder profiles be gathered together? Not in individuals ftp folder but a folder named xpadder profiles.

With the two systems in question I tend to have a keyboard with me. So I fire up Atic Atac and press the key to select the Kempston joystick and then "0" to start. I've been lazy, I could have made a profile for that game and shared it, but also I want to avoid using xpadder.

I need to think about this more once the fog of New Years Eve has lifted.

While looking around for solutions to this problem, I've found that information regarding what buttons are in use in the original game is quite scare.

I can't recall, but didn't most commodore 64 games use pretty much teh same keys? The Spectrum ZX as well?

No they dont. On my c64 setup. Based in the manuals i saw. Some games are joystick port1. Some are port 2. Some use their own keysets for controlls. Some games use overlays and a gazillion keys. Some use joysticks and some keys. Like chopndrop will use both joysticks and keyset for player 3. At least we have most the manuals on my setup for c64.

If we have a group of folks will to pick the top 30-50 games, i'm willing to take 10 of them and map them. Would need a guideline on the structure.

Well here is an idea anyway:

Gamebase already has which joystick ports and i think if game is keyboard only on their site. I would bet it is also in their database as well. You could take that info and make 3 winvice emulators:

1 for port1

1 for port2

1 for kb

Then you should be able to add roms to each of the 3 emulators. So at least you are starting games with correct control types. Then it could be taken a step further to define custom keys per games, xpadder profiles, etc. I would start there by separating them out that way at least for c64.

I know gamebase has a similar db for spectrum not that familiar. Maybe same logic can apply?

I am short on time and may revisit this later. I am focusing on pinball this year. Good luck.

I ran a quick vlookup in excel and have broken out the c64 games based on input type based on my unofficial no intro.

Now i am sure you can mass add rom names to an alternate emulator list somewheres. Will need to take a look at that next.

That is really as far as I go with this. If someone wants to take it to the next level and define xpadder profiles per game for ones that only use special keys then have at it. I think just having these lists will really really help out. Now back to see if I can just dump these into a alternate emulator .ini or wherever HL keeps that at. For Spectrum Good luck.

That is pretty cool. I am sure you can then find the file and edit it manually to put it in for all the games vs manually adding all those in. I have not updated to the latest HL release yet (it is on my todo list). So I just edited the games.ini in hyperlaunch and updated it to use the proper emulator for all of mine.

Keyboard games launch with 1 instance of winvice with joy keys disabled.

Port 1 games launch with 1 instance with the Port 1 Keyset A and joy keys enabled. Port 2 is keyset b.

Port 2 games launch with 1 instance with the Port 2 Keyset A and joy keys enabled. Port 1 is keyset b.

I use xpadder as I did not like how my xbox360 controllers worked in the emu when just using the joysticks directly. I am extremely happy now. I will always have the correct controller in the hand if the game supports the controller and won't need to turn both my controllers on anymore when playing games alone. Good luck!

If I need to look up keys at least for c64 we have most the manuals. Spectrum is a whole different animal I think. But someone could probably do the same.

Joy2 is W,S,A,D as directions up, down, left right

F,G,H,J,K,L,;,' as 8 buttons

Give WahooBrian (The only guy on here that supports the Cleveland Indians said we can swap the Joy1 for Joy2 means we're just left with keyboard.

How to proceed? i've not been part of a project here before so could use the guidance.

I will tell you now. That using letters n and y cannot be used for joystick keys. All the trainers require those and all the c64 games have trainers. You may want to replace letters with special characters for c64. Hope that helps.

I am saying using y or n for joystick button is bad. Just to clarify. If you have those mapped to get by trainers awezome.

I put my Commodore64.ini out in my folder on the FTP. It has all the entries for games that require the default to be JoyPort 2. Feel free to grab it.

Read the module notes as well. Has specific instructions on getting the JoyPort setting to behave correctly.

*Disclaimer* - This ini was built from the Gamebase64 database, so if it's wrong there, its wrong here too.
