This actually happens more then you think to these plants. I've seen a few more plants like this do the same thing over the years. THe chemicals ppl use to make homemade bombs often come from fertilizers.

Dude that explosion is crazy even though it was a ways away when it happened it looked like it got so close to them. Poor kid he probably heard nothing but ringing for hours.

Yeah fertilizer makes a good source for explosives, so a fertilizer storage compound on fire is something to keep some distance from indeed.

Reminds me a bit of a fire & explosion years back in the city I live. A fireworks storage at overcapacity situated in a residential area caught fire and cause a huge explosion & aftermath.

We were lucky the beer brewery close by was just heavily damaged and the ammonia silo didn't blow up as well.
