PCSX2 - Minimum Requirements / Spec - Help!

Hello all,

Ive been trying to add PCSX2 to my hyperspin cabinet, but am struggling with performance issues.

The PC is a Dell Optimplex dual core 3.7Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb hardrive, but does not run games anywhere near playable.

Ive tried following numerous PCSX2 setup guides but to no avail.

The first game I tried ran OK, "LOTR, Aragons Quest", but other games such as "Baldur's gate, dark alliance", "the getaway" and "GTA" all run choppy and/or extremely slow.

I guess I have a few questions, firstly, is my computers spec up to running PCSX2 at all (according to the minimum requirements section on the site it should be?!) , if not what is a good spec to be looking for to play the majority of games.

I'd like to add this to an existing cab, which already has most systems up to PS1 running fine, so am prepared to spend a bit on a higher spec PC if requried.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'll tell you what I think and it doesn't have much to do with PC requirements to run PCSX2 emulator.

First of all, the 6th generation consoles, i.e., Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube (PC also, but you'll understand the point later) share multi plataform titles, GTA is one of them.

PCSX2 is a great emulator, besides being plugin dependent, it needs a high-end PC to run most games, but even though, it probably won't run all games as smoothly.

A friend of mine here in the forums has a core i7 and a good GPU, believe it or not, most games didn't run quite well.

Note that PCSX2 runs better in OGL than DirectX, Dolphin, on the other hand runs better in DirectX than OGL.

Now, what I decided regarding PS2 in my setup:

1 - I filtered PS2-only games in wikipedia, and selected those that interested me

2 - All titles that PS2 has that GameCube/Wii and PC also has, I chose these, because, we all know Dolphin is far more solid for emulation and PC is "native", so for me, there was no point keeping GTA's, Guitar Heroe's and lots of other games that GC/Wii/PC or even PSP has, why?

Because if you want a smooth setup, with games running smoothly, don't keep laggy games for PS2 in your setup, PCSX2 is very demanding and even if you have a killer machine, there are possibility of glitches, etc.

3 - Once these games were filtered, I ran these exclusive titles, for example, Grandia 3 is a PS2 exclusive and I love the original Grandia, it ran smoothly in OGL at 60 FPS, no lags at all, and lots of other titles ran smoothly, so I put them inside a folder like "X:\Hyperspin\Roms\PS2\OK", and I was filling this folder with titles that ran fine, the other exclusives, in my machine didn't run well, sadly, Gran Turismo 3 and 4 is slow as hell, God of War too, probably I'd need a killer CPU to run than better, but my core i3 can't handle such titles. It's sad because, see, Dolphin emulates N64 for roms in wad format, it runs GameCube that is superior than PS2 in some ways and Wii that is part of the 7th console generation, that is basically a GameCube and a half, i.e., even more superior than a PS2, and these systems run faaaar better in Dolphin, that isn't a emulator dependent of plugins, and I believe that Dolphin will also emulate wiiu soon.

Now, back to PS2, basically I removed all titles that other platforms also has because this emulator is heavy and it's behavior changes from title to title, I left exclusive titles that runs smoothly in OGL without messing much with configs, just moving the hacks bar to number 2 or 3, safe/balance, something like that. There's no much point (for me) messing with this settings much because it can ruin other game that was running fine without messing with that.

So this is my point, get rid of GTA's for PS2, install versions for PC, play Vice City Stories from PSP, etc.

I didn't want a setup that, if me or anyone else opens up a PS2 game and see that running laggy and slow, that would be a shame.

Hope this helps.

Sure, I didn't finish this setup, but so far I got this working smoothly in OGL without messing with configs inside PCSX2.

Sadly, most games that I'd like didn't run well in my setup, basically a core I3 3120, 4GB ram and Gforce 9400 GT, so I left those games in another folder for future use, when the emulator gets better or when (and if) I upgrade my PC, but I'm not planning on upgrading my PC in the near future, and I wouldn't do it just for playing PS2.

GameCube and Wii games are running fine, just fine.

Yeah I know that PCSX2 is a CPU killer, but you know, there's no point for me to spend any money now just to play PS2 in my PC, being that I can find the real console almost for free here, but yeah, a i7 can almost run Gran Turismo 4 for PS2 at full speed, sad but true.

Maybe a new PS2 emulator can arise and be as solid as Dolphin is, not needing that much of a CPU to emulate a system.

Man, it's crazy that a console from 15 years ago eat up 70% of a core i7, but I remember quite well that SSF just ran at full speed when a core2duo was released.

To put it simple, it wants ghz. It's wants cpu ghz on 1-2 cores.  OC I5 or a hight end I7 do this. But it's overkill as expensive and no emus use all those cores.

To get it working perfect you need 2 cores running over 4ghz. Cheapest and best way is a Intel Pentium anniversary edition dual core.

Comes sec 3.2 as standard, runs 4.3 OC on a stock cooler on full burn no problem. Same pwrformace than a current gen  I7 running to same standards.  Except this cop costs 43 pounds brand new hehe

Yeah, you're all right, my core i3 2120 has 2 physic cores and two running in hyper threading, it's clock runs or reaches 3.30 Ghz and some games run quite well at 60 fps, the problem setting up PCSX2 into Hyperspin is that if you (me) just throw games inside roms folder and direct PCSX2 to open them that won't work for most games, for example, I can use some speed hacks for a specific game or other and that can work better but, on the other hand it can ruin those that run fine without messing with configs, I researched about PCSX2 emulation methods and I found that PCSX2 runs well in OpenGL, opposite to Dolphin that runs better in Direct3D.

So what I did was putting all exclusives that I wanted in roms folder (because there was no point keeping games that GameCube/Wii and PC has and runs better without eating up all PC resources and running slow, like GTAs for example, they don't look good in PCSX2 and runs slow in PCSX2 in my setup), set PCSX2 in OpenGL and run one by one to see how they behave. In a range of  115 titles, exclusive ones, 35 titles ran smoothly in OpenGL without messing with any speed hacks, the other ones that were slow I put in a separate folder for future use when a better emulation is achieved or when I upgrade my PC.

So the deal here is just leave these titles that runs at 60 fps active in HS setup for now.

Nice topic guys. I always donate my old main PC to my cab when I upgrade so my cab runs a 1st gen i7 2.8 with 12 GB ram - gtx 770. I was shocked to find ps2 games lagging. Problem is they take a good while to load up to test. Perhaps a working min spec list would be a good idea. ?

Do we have a ps2 exclusive game list anywhere?

Posted

I used this wikipedia page as a source for my PS2 in HS > https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:PlayStation_2-only_games&pageuntil=Herdy+Gerdy#mw-pages

Here is the list you'll find there, games released only for PS2, for my setup, using this exclusives list, I selected those that interested me, once I got them I tested one by one using the default PCSX2 config in OpenGL, about 35% of these filtered games worked at 60 fps in my setup, so these will be active in my setup, the others that lagged I put in another folder for future use.

I just rechecked this list and didn't find God of War as an exclusive, wikipedia has some info about it, it's not a PS2 exclusive because it was re-released for Ps3 in a remastered version and there's a port for Vita as well.

That list is definitely a good start for exclusives. I tend to just scroll through the database and check to see which ones I want, I had around 300 games back in the day on PS2 so I already have a pretty good idea of some games I want for my setup. The only downside to that list is that it doesn't list games also released on the original Xbox (which is quite a few) and since Xbox emulation is basically non-existent right now you'd be missing a bunch of good games. Just something to be aware of.

Yeah, also, we should cross check with Xbox and see what could be added to our setup, that will be something if we sort this.

Well I was a little bored tonight and decided to start compiling that list. I scraped the list of Xbox games and matched them to the PS2 database to find the common games between those 2 systems (about 690). So now it's just a matter of going through that list and removing any games that are available on other systems. Once that's done I'll have a list of the games exclusive to the PS2 and Xbox but only playable on PS2 since Xbox isn't emulated yet. I'll probably start eliminating some games from the list tonight.

Great buddy! If you need help, let me know!

Thanks buddy, I'm checking the list now.

I was expecting some Japanese titles to appear on this list, like Metal Slug (despite the same name of the original game, it's a 3D metal slug exclusive for PS2 in Japan). I know it's not the ultimate list, but I'll tell what I'm missing here.

Castlevania - Lament of Innocence (USA)

Fatal Frame II - Crimson Butterfly (USA)

Fatal Frame III - The Tormented (USA)

Grandia Xtreme (USA)

King of Fighters 2006, The (USA)

Tekken 4 and 5 (USA) I'm not sure if these are emulated elsewhere

Twisted Metal - Black (USA)

Some others from another folder here

Berserk - Millennium Falcon Hen Seima Senki no Shō (Has english patch)

Cool Boarders - Code Alien (Japan)

Metal Slug (Japan) (The text in this game in in Japanese but the speech are all in English, and the game seems to be pretty fun)

Shining Wind (Japan)

.Hack Series

King of Fighters XI (For me it's better emulated in PS2 than the arcade version)

Maximo - Ghosts to Glory (Kinda Ghouls and Ghosts in 3D)

Maximo vs. Army of Zin (USA)

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum (Works perfectly in PS2 emulator, for me, better than in Demul)

RPG Maker 3 (Just for the sake of being an exclusive, I wouldn't play it for sure)

Syphon Filter - The Omega Strain (USA)

Time Crisis - Crisis Zone

Soulcalibur III (USA) Not sure if it's emulated elsewhere

From the ones I have here, these where the ones that I missed in the list, but it's a good start, I'll add Japanese titles as I test some.

Thanks for your efforts!

Yeah I knew it would miss some, it's just the nature of the beast. Without manually researching every title it's bound to happen. I also limited my scope to the games that were in the HyperSpin approved database here so I knew they were compatible or legit which is why I missed some you mentioned.

When I was manually verifying after cross-checking databases if it said Arcade as a system I just assumed it was released for MAME or TTX or something which is why some KOF and the Tekkens slipped through. There are quite a few I found manually searching as well that were in different systems under a different name which is why they are/aren't included. For example, you mentioned Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly which was released on the Wii as Project Zero 2: Wii Edition. Which I never would have found if I didn't research it.

That's why I wanted to get a decent start with the list; I knew that people would remember/find games that weren't found in the lists I used or be able to find more information about the games. Thanks for pointing out the ones you did. The more people that read and add to it, the better it will become!

Thanks!

Project Zero 2: Wii Edition? OK I'll get it! (Maybe coz I don't like scary games)

I just remembered a game that I thought that was a PS2 exclusive, it's Metal Gear Solid 2, it ran really bad in my PC, so I found a PC version of this game.

Aorin

Yeah I read that Substance actually is an upgraded version, and as PCSX2 needs far higher specs to run some games, the PC version was the one I chose to keep.

Unfortunately I haven't really had time to put in this. I just finished my degree so the job search is taking up all my time now (and entry level positions seem to be non existent). I've filtered the PS2 list from the other system databases and added the PS2 exclusives from the wikipedia listing so really all that's left is to go through game by game in the database to verify or eliminate titles, and right now I have nowhere near that amount of free time. The one I posted should be a great starting point if anyone wants to work on it in the meantime. Sorry for the lack of progress.

Don't apologise...life comes first!

I'm only interested in adding 2 PS2 games to my cabinet, Maiximo 1 & 2, but I need to know if they can even be played without analog controls.

Anyone know or can check? 6 button arcade control panel.

I run it on a i3 (first generation) and have the hacks setup just right I guess.. I only play one game so they are setup perfect for GTA San Andreas... I'm sure it's not 100% speed but seriously during game play I don't even notice it.. definitely nowhere near the lag I get on WII and or gamecube emulation so on my i3 it gets it done... but like I said I play one game.. I tried playing a basketball game and it was SLOW but again perhaps I needed to change the settings which I don't plan to so I'm happy.
