For some reason I have always assumed everyone here updated every release and that's why they only have the latest xml.  But I have begun to realize that there may be more people like me who really dread updating. For the record: I am running .158 but with the recent MAME/MESS merger I will likely be updating within the next release or two.  I have never used MESS so I am unsure of what will be added but more games can't be a bad thing right? Feel free to post what some of the games I have been missing out on are. Or what games to stay away from LOL. I am also looking for feedback on how people manage their MAME.

Do you update MAME every release? Proficient with clrmame/chdman? Or just re-DL? Does the merger have you yearning to update? Or pining? Do you "trim" your MAME sets down? And/or split them into separate wheels? Or do you enjoy having 8k games on 1 wheel? (How many games are in the latest xml?)

Managing such a huge collection can be daunting, who knows, this thread may even help other people with similar questions. So take a couple minutes out of your day and post up your ideas/methods/strategies. I would love to have everyone here vote and have nice overview of what is actually being used. Would it be 80% latest? Or something more surprising like a more even spread across the last 20 releases?

I always keep up to date because it is really not that difficult and gives me a great ratio at the place I get it from. Clrmamepro can be daunting at first, but it's not too bad once you get used to it.

I am lucky enough to have enough space on my hard disks to keep all the roms regardless of if they work or not. I just use hyperspin to filter out all the non working roms.

I keep all the games on one wheel, but make the most of the favourites menu.

I update every 1 or 2. It's easy, doesn't take long and you have to download very little that way. Plus it keeps your PD account active (I believe they lock you after 6 months of no activity) I'll update agin with 169 most likely.

Then I run it with MAMEUIFX so I don't even need to mess with, or worry about, the MESS crap.

I haven't updated in like 4 months or so.  As long as the core games that you might play are in a working state, I don't really care about updates.  For example, one of the recent updates where some golden tee started working better didn't matter at all to me.

I am at 167 and dont plan on updating unless there's something new that I haven't played... not that I've played all of them either lol

I also use the merged set, so I only have like 3100 or so on my wheel...I just go by the parent u less there's a need for a clone which I can add on my own...

Plus it helps with making bezels as I only make them for the parent rom.

And about pleasuredome deactivating u... I didn't use my account for nearly 2 years until a few months a go... Wasn't locked out or anything :)
