Opening nested roms in the good(x) series

Hello everyone!

So I have rocketlaunch and Hyperspin set up, everything communicating nice. But I'm having an issue which I don't know if there is a solution for or not as I can't find an article or forum post addressing it specifically.

I am an NES completionist and so I got the good series of some 1800 titles. For those who don't know, the way the folders are set up is there is a master NES folder, within which is each of the roms in 7zip files. Now each title may have 1 or more roms. For instance, if a group translated a japanese game into English, within the title's zip file may be a "Japanesegame [!]" rom, as well as a "Japanesegame [EngT]" rom file.

What I want to know specifically is, is there a way to get rocketlaunch to address these nested files without unzipping literally everything and rezipping the whole lot of it in individual archives? I know this already can be done in a small front end called QuickPlay which lets you click on the title and then select which specific version of the rom you want to load from a drop down. The trouble is for as utilitarian as it is, QuickPlay has a hideous interface.

Is there a solution here?

Why do you need them zipped they are tiny?

I agree with Mr Banned above, just get a separate HS ready set and use that instead. If yu have to play translated titles them you can add them to the HS ready set.

I appreciate the thought but the directory is as it's going to be. It's beyond too much work to separate each rom file into its own archive and there are too many to have unzipped. I am using my nes collection as one example of many. Please, no further "why don't you restructure your directory" responses.

I believe I may have found a promising solution with a problem. In the RocketLauncherui under the settings tab I found the Rom Mapping sub-tab. In here the first two sections, Rom Mapping and Launch Menu, appear to do exactly what I want them to do according to the little i balloons beside each term. However, when I enable these options something else odd happens. I get the error when trying to launch a game that says the extension may not be in the emulator. I currently have 7z|zip|nes|fds in there. I notice at the top of the Rom Mapping tab it gives various options for importing and saving INIs, however, there is no suggested naming protocol and it does not open to a directory in the Hyperspin or rocketlauncher folder. I am wondering if I can figure out the protocol for saving these settings if it will fix the problem?

Does anyone who knows how to use the rom mapping tab have any advice here?

I would be really lazy and extract all the ROMS and then create an xml based on them.

I would suggest reading through this information and see how you get on. If you still have trouble report back and post your RL log or create a post at the RL site.

So am I to understand that to get this operational I have to manually create an entry for literally every single file? There's no global option here?

only if you want those duplicate roms displayed in Hyperspin,

and only if you like Hyperspin to display a Wheel, Video, theme, Cart or box.

rom mapping lets you launch alt named roms,  Hyperspin will only display the rom and name found in the XML.

I know you don't want to here any "Replace your roms" posts;  but take it from someone who had Good sets when he started using Hyperspin and was dumb enough to:

- Rebuild all his XMLs to match his Good sets,

- Rename ALL his Videos,  box, cart and themes to match his Good sets.

REPLACE YOUR ROMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,    this way all the artwork and videos you download will be plug and play.

Thanks for nothing. Fuck off.

Don't be mad at him for your ignorance. No, there is no global option to use whatever set you like. It's common knowledge around here that HS mainly uses "no-intro" naming as a base. So most people get that set and be done. You can spend days getting your set to run... then you can spend more days trying to rename all the videos and cover art to match. You came to the forums for advice, and that's what you got. And its good advice! Don't be an asshole to the people trying to save YOU from doing unneeded work.

I've already banned him Spawk, I'm not standing for that abuse to other members who are trying to help.

But guys, you gotta understand. He's a completionist.

I guess that doesn't include completing an ini with all 1800 alt-vers, bad dumps and translations of his NES roms.

Loved how he used the term "communicating nice" in his initial post. Guess that has an alt-meaning to him.
