Silent Hill Arcade running in Windows 10.

Well, perhaps that's slightly misleading, but I'm happy to say that I have finally managed to get Silent Hill the Arcade running in Virtual Box using a Windows XP virtual machine. Until now I've always been greeted by either a crash or a black screen, but with the latest version of Virtual Box and the latest NVidia drivers, it seems to be working just fine!

Yeah, very easy. You need a licenced (or not) copy of Windows. I used XP because I had a key for it, but I think that Silent Hill Arcade runs on anything up to Windows 8. Not 8.1 or beyond.

Set up a virtual machine to run whichever flavour of Windows you choose. It's not difficult, but make sure you enable 3D acceleration.

Use the VM to play Silent Hill. Works great!

I have to admit, I didn't do anything special to get it running. I just kept trying it after each new release of Virtual Box and Nvidia drivers. I couldn't get it to run at all in VMWare player because 3D acceleration crashes immediately for me on that.

Virtual Box used to give me just a black screen, then eventually I got in game, but there were no models. A little bit of tweaking the settings (it helps that I can read Japanese!) and hey presto, it works!

I was playing with Silent Hill Arcade yesterday on my Win 10 cab.

It launches to what looks like a grey test/calibration screen that says insert coin/credits, but I can't seem to get past it even with the controls set. Feels like it's just waiting for me to press the right button and it will start...

Didn't know it wasn't Win 10 compatible so that's probably the issue.

Yeah, unfortunately something between Windows 8.1 and 10 broke it. It seems to get stuck on some security/hardware check. I tried everything to get around it, even down to replacing some DLLs, but no go.

It is theoretically possible to launch directly from RocketLauncher or Hyperspin, but I haven't had a chance to set it up yet.

Just got it working from the command line, so it should be possible in Hyperspin.

If you make use of Virtual Box snapshots it'll even boot faster than the real thing!

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I got something to work that otherwise couldn't be done. I have the space and the processing power to do it, so why not? There will not be an emulator for these games, so unless someone figured out a way to do it, then it would be lost. If you aren't interested, that's fine. Jog on.

Thanks for the tip. I had a spare WinXP license, so I installed VirtualBox a while ago to test some stuff. I never thought about using it for this, so thanks again!

BTW, with a small registry change you can even still update XP ;)

I have a special thing for the Silent Hill series. I have played through all of them, on various platforms. Except for that weird one on PS Vita that I haven´t finished.

So I´d like to be able to play through Silent Hill Arcade as well. But I can´t get it going.

I´m on Windows 10.

Set up Windows 8 32-bit in VirtualBox 5.0.16 r105871.

Installed DirectX, C++ redist.

Installed Guest additions in Safe Mode, and extension pack.

Enabled 3D.

WDDM Virtual 3d driver is installed.

Game crashes after Epilepsy warning.

Tomkun, am I missing something, you wrote that you installed the latest Nvidia drivers, but when I try to do that,

the installer says that it couldn´t find any card? Have looked around, but can´t seem to find a solution?

I´m probably doing something wrong...
