About the company (ALG):

Taken from the ALG Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Laser_Games

American Laser Games was a company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico that created numerous light gun laserdisc video games featuring live action full motion video. The company was founded in the late 1980s by Robert Grebe, who had originally created a system to train police officers under the company name ICAT (Institute for Combat Arms and Tactics) and later adapted the technology for arcade games. Its first hit game was Mad Dog McCree, a light gun shooter set in the American Old West. Almost all arcade games released by the company were light gun shooters and a number of them also had an Old West theme.

...

In 2000, the development and publishing rights to all of the games that were produced by American Laser Games were purchased by Digital Leisure, Inc from Her Interactive. Many of these games were then re-released for the PC and in DVD TV game format.

American Laser Games produced the following games:

Light gun arcade games

Mad Dog McCree (1990)

Who Shot Johnny Rock? (1991)

Space Pirates (1992)

Mad Dog II: The Lost Gold (1992)

Gallagher's Gallery (1992)

Crime Patrol (1993)

Crime Patrol 2: Drug Wars (1994)

The Last Bounty Hunter (1994)

Fast Draw Showdown (1994)

Shootout at Old Tucson (1994)

Other games

Mazer

Way of the Warrior (with Naughty Dog)

OrbAtak

McKenzie & Co.

McKenzie & Co. : More Friends

The Vampire Diaries

Battles in Time (with QQP)

About the company (WoW):

Taken from the Worlds of Wonder WiKi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worlds_of_Wonder_(toy_company)

Worlds of Wonder or WoW was a 1980s American toy company founded by former Atari employees, including Don Kingsborough and Mark Robert Goldberg.

The Action Max game console, taken from the Action Max WiKi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Max

Action Max is a console using VHS tapes for games. It was created in 1987 by Worlds of Wonder.

The system required its owner to also have a VCR, as the console did not have a way to play tapes itself. Using a light gun (or two for 2-player games) players would shoot at the screen. The gaming was strictly point-based and dependent on shot accuracy. Players could not truly "lose" or "win" a game. This, along with the fact that the only real genre on the system were light gun games that played exactly the same way every time, greatly limited the system's appeal and lead to its quick downfall.

The Action Max had a very limited release outside the US and only one PAL game is suspected to have been made.

The following games were made for the Action Max console:

.38 Ambush Alley

Blue Thunder

Hydrosub: 2021

The Rescue of Pops Ghostly

Sonic Fury (both NTSC and PAL)

Fright Night (unreleased)

The Emulator:

Taken from the Singe website: http://www.singeengine.com/cms/

SINGE (named after the dragon in Dragon's Lair) is an add-on for the Daphne Laserdisc Emulator that allows motivated individuals to make their own Full Motion Video (FMV) games. SINGE uses a Lua-based scripting system for rapid prototyping of new laserdisc games, or the creation of entirely new games! Some programming experience is necessary but the language is easy to learn, very powerful, and fast. All the features needed to develop your own game are made available through an application programming interface (API).

SINGE provides numerous features to the game developer. Some of the more interesting ones are:

  • Object-Oriented Programming Language
  • Easy-to-Use Interface into Daphne
  • Sprites
  • TrueType Font Support
  • 8-bit Color Space with Transparency
  • Multi-channel, Overlapping, Stereo Sound
  • Analog and Digital Input Device Support

Like the Daphne emulator, Singe uses framefile to point the game to your Audio/Video files. Unlike Daphne, Singe also uses .singe file. These files tell the emaulator what to do with the A/V files, what to paint on the screen and how to process the game. These .singe files can be edited to change the location of your game.

Your hardware requirements:

Requirements:

A reasonably fast computer is required for this group of SINGE games. Minimum recommended is a 2.4 GHz single core CPU with at least 512MB of memory.

The custom Daphne build with SINGE enabled.

The installation program for the game you want to play.

About 1GB of hard drive space per game.

Finally you need to own the proper CD media for each. Specifically the Windows PC CDROM version. Buy this direct from Digital Leisure or online places like Ebay or Amazon.

NOTE: In the case of Mad Dog McCree, the DVD disc (NTSC version) is also supported.

Let's get started!

This will assume you already have all the media you need to install the games. Like Daphne, Singe has installers that read DVD's you have to validate your ownership of the games and copy the video/audio files into the Singe directory. The installers will also setup your files and directories with the games in them. With the WoW ActionMax (Worlds Of Wonder, also the makers of Teddy Ruxpin) all the files are available on the Singe website: http://www.singeengine.com/cms/node/6.

So, your fist stop is to go to the Singe Engine download page and download all the installers for the American Laser Games that you have media for. While your there, go ahead and download the Daphne/Singe emulator called "daphne-singe-win32-v1.14.zip", the "ActionMax Emulator" and all the ActionMax game files.

Extract the contents of daphne-singe-win32-v1.14.zip into your emulators directory. Mine is C:\Emulation\Emulators, where many people use the HyperSpin Directory called C:\HyperSpin\Emulators.

post-48498-142870607695_thumb.jpg

Extract the two folders in the archive ActionMax-Emulator.zip (ActionMax & Singe) into your daphne_singe emulator directory called singe.

post-48498-142870607699_thumb.jpg

So my directory structure looks like this:

C:\Emulation\Emulators\daphne-singe

C:\Emulation\Emulators\daphne-singe\singe\ActionMax

C:\Emulation\Emulators\daphne-singe\singe\Singe

We will start with the easiest first. WoW ActionMax

Put all the audio/video files into the ...daphne-singe\singe\ActionMax directory.

post-48498-142870607703_thumb.jpg

For the batch file method to launch the game, I chose this route to keep the two system separate. Create a directory called ...daphne-singe\AMframefile to put the ActionMax batch files into. The directory ...daphne-singe\framefile I will use to put the ALG batch files into.

Once you have created the directory for the batch files, create a new txt document called "38ambushalley.bat". Right-click on it and hit edit. It should open up in Notepad. Now type the following with your correct daphne-singe emulator path:

@C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen_window -noserversend -framefile C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe/ActionMax/frame_38AmbushAlley.txt -script C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe/ActionMax/38AmbushAlley.singe
Save and close the file. To check and make sure it works, just double-click the batch file and the game should start.

The batch file syntax just says where the daphne.exe is and passes the singe switch, vldp says to use a virtual laser disk player, the screen resolutions for x and y, -fullscreen, -noserversend tells Daphne not to send usage stats to the central server, -framefile is the location of the framefile and -script is the location of the Singe program to run inside Daphne.

Now, just create the rest of the batch files just like you did the first one, only using the following names:

bluethunder.bat, hydrosub2021.bat, popsghostly.bat & sonicfury.bat. Change the batch files to the correct framefile and singe files for that game.

Test each one and make sure they all work.

Now on to HyperSpin!

Open up HyperHQ and add your new wheel. WoW Action Max

Once you have added the wheel, go to Wheel Settings and select it in the drop down. Make your changes like this:

post-48498-142870610614_thumb.png

You should now have all 5 Action Max games working in HyperSpin!

Note: If you are going to use RL, be sure and set the "Execution: HyperLaunch" and "PC Game: Disabled".

Now, to get them working in HyperLaunch3.

We have to make some changes to the names of the frame files so they can be "proper". I hate to modify any original files, so I just made copies of each frame file. Then rename them so the name matches what's in the database. For example:

Navigate to the ...daphne-singe\singe\ActionMax directory. There you will find "frame_38AmbushAlley.txt". Just copy it and rename it to "38ambushalley.txt". Do the same for the other four frame files. When done you should have matching framefile and singe files like this:

post-48498-142870607708_thumb.jpg

Now, launch HyperLaunchHQ and setup your Daphne Singe Global Emulator:

post-48498-142870607711_thumb.jpg

Point the Path to your ...daphne-singe\daphne.exe close out that screen.

Click on the WoW ActionMax emulator all the way at the bottom:

post-48498-142870607715_thumb.jpg

Choose the Default Emulator as Daphne Singe and set the Rom Paths to the ...daphne-singe\singe\ActionMax directory.

Now click on the Games tab and click on the blue "Audit all the games for this system" button. Your five Action Max games should all show up.

post-48498-142870607719_thumb.jpg

Click on one of the games and hit the "Launch..." button and it should work.

That's it for WoW Action Max!

On to American Laser Games!

The ALG is very similar to Action Max in that they use daphne-singe also. There is a little more to it, because you have to use the installers and media to get the games into your daphne-singe directory. So I will show the process for one game (Mad Dog McCree) and it applies to the others that you have.

First, go ahead and either insert your Mad Dog McCree disk or mount the ISO. Run the "SINGE Mad Dog Installer.exe" installer and OK the disclaimer. Select the path to Mad Dog McCree disc: and select the path to Daphne's main folder:

post-48498-142870607722_thumb.png

Click "Begin!" and let it run for a while. When it's done, you should have two files and a new directory like this:

...daphne-singe\play_maddog_cdrom.bat

...daphne-singe\play_maddog_cdrom_fullscreen.bat

...daphne-singe\singe\maddog (here is the framefile, singe files and various sounds and graphics used by the game)

...daphne-singe\singe\maddog\cdrom (here are the audio/video files)

Again, for the sake of not changing any original files, copy the play_maddog_cdrom_fullscreen.bat file into your ...daphne-singe\framefile directory. Rename it as maddog.bat and edit it so it looks like this (with your path to daphne-singe):

The original file:

@daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen -framefile singe/maddog/frame_maddog_cdrom.txt singe/maddog/maddog_cdrom.singe
The edited file:

@C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen_window -framefile C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\frame_maddog_cdrom.txt -script C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\maddog_cdrom.singe
You will have to add the full path to daphne.exe, the framefile, the singe file and add the -script switch before the singe file.

Now, double-click the maddog.bat file and it should start the game. Follow the same process for all the games you wish to install. Test them all from the ...daphne-singe\framefile directory and you should be ready to move on to HyperHQ.

Bring up HyperHQ and add your "American Laser Games" wheel. Once you have that, go to Wheel settings and select American Laser Games in the drop down. Make the following changes:

post-48498-14287061062_thumb.png

(Same, same as you did for Action Max, only use the framefile directory instead of the AGframefile directory)

This should get American Laser Games working in HyperSpin.

Now on to RL and ALG!

You will need to make some changes to the file names to make them "proper" as well. Only this time, you will need to copy the framefiles and the singe files. Example:

Navigate to your ...daphne-singe\singe\maddog directory. Find the file named "maddog_cdrom.singe" and make a copy of it. Rename it to "maddog.singe".

Also, find the file named "frame_maddog_cdrom.txt" and make a copy of it also. Rename it to "maddog.txt".

Do this for all the games you have installed in their own directory.

Bring up HyperLaunchHQ. Since you already setup the Global Daphne Singe Emulator, you can click on emulator for American Laser Games on the left.

Choose Daphne Singe as the Default Emulator and set your Rom Paths as shown:

post-48498-142870607729_thumb.jpg

Now click on the Games tab and click on the blue "Audit all the games for this system" button. All the games you installed should show up:

post-48498-142870607733_thumb.jpg

Select maddog and Launch it!

Note: If you are using RL, make sure your HyperHQ is setup like this:

Thanks Gig!

I'm not very good at making it look good. I have done a lot of technical writing in my job, but I usually turn it over to the Sales department to make it look good.

I think that's it. I ran through it all as I wrote it. So, please let me know if I left out anything or it's not clear.

Thanks,

Ron

That reads very well Ron, I usually struggle and give up with guides at this time of night. But I've read it all and seems very easy to understand. I shall try and implement it over the weekend. Thanks again.

tl:dr ;)

My god Ron that is awesome. Putting myself into this thread so I can go through this mammoth effort. Dude you da man. Just saying thanks doesn't seem enough. You rock.

Ok,

So I found a fix for the .singe files, if you installed them into the wrong directory or a different directory and want to move them. All the .singe files are text Singe script files. When you install the game from the installer, it creates these .singe files. Had a user I helped out that had installed the game into a different directory and didn't understand why it would not run after being moved.

Open the .singe file in your favorite text editor and look for the path you originally installed the game to (it will also be the error on the screen when you try to start the game):

sVersion = "1.0b"
sType = "CDROM"

dofile("D:/Games/crimepatrol/cdrom-globals.singe")
dofile("D:/Games/crimepatrol/crimepatrol/cdrom-setuplevel.singe")
dofile("D:/Games/crimepatrol/crimepatrol/hscore.singe")
dofile("D:/Games/crimepatrol/crimepatrol/manage.singe")

Make them look like:

sVersion = "1.0b"
sType = "CDROM"

dofile("singe/crimepatrol/cdrom-globals.singe")
dofile("singe/crimepatrol/cdrom-setuplevel.singe")
dofile("singe/crimepatrol/hscore.singe")
dofile("singe/crimepatrol/manage.singe")

Not all of the .singe files have absolute paths in them or even references to any other files, either way you can use relative paths.

Hey Guys, I'm a little stumped here. Been working on this all night and I can't make anything out of it.

I've added several American Laser Games to my Hyperspin build running RocketLauncher.0. Two of the games (Cyber Patrol and Drug Wars) work perfect both inside and outside of Hyperspin. I can enter the game, exit the game, everything is literally perfect. No problems here...

The other 5 games (Space Pirates, The Last Bounty Hunter, Who Killed Johnny Rock, and Mad Dog 1/2) will launch, but it will launch to a random "screengrab" and freeze. For example, Johnny Rock will launch to the first frame of the video of him being shot outside of the club. Mad Dog McCree opens to a black screen. The Last Bounty Hunter opens to the old guy sitting on a horse. It will just sit there frozen until I exit. BUT, these five games run perfectly outside of Hyperspin using the follow batch file (using Mad Dog McCree as an example):

@daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen -noserversend -framefile singe/maddog/frame_maddog_cdrom.txt -script singe/maddog/maddog_cdrom.singe

Any ideas are very much appreciated. I'm stumped.

Could you post your daphne_log.txt file when you try to launch a game that doesn't work.

Also, please post your directory structure as well: Where is daphne.exe, where are your batch files, where are your singe files and where are the A/V files?

Thanks,

Ron

Sure. Here is my daphne_log.txt, pasted to the bottom of message.

My directory structure is as follows:

Emulator Path - C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe

(contains daphne.exe)

ROM Path - C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\singe

(contains subfolders with the games. johnnyrock, maddog, etc)

Singe files are in their respective folders under the ROM Path (under maddog, spacepirates, lbh, etc)

A/V files are located in a "cdrom" folder under each subfolder for the ROM (ex. singe\maddog\cdrom)

Batch files are in the root emulator path. Sitting alongside daphne.exe. These are not used except outside of Hyperspin. They were created when I used the Installer files from singeengine.com. Hyperspin does not point to these at all, but the games run fine outside of Hyperspin using these.

daphne_log.txt:

Sixty,

Ok... The framefile and singe file is not correct in the command line.

--Command line is: C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 1024 -y 768 -fullscreen_window -framefile C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\singe\maddog\hitbox-cdrom-lvlbank.txt -script C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\singe\maddog\hitbox-cdrom-lvlbank.singe

They should be:

@C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen_window -framefile C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\frame_maddog_cdrom.txt -script C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\maddog_cdrom.singe

Or (if you have renamed the files as in my guide):

@C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen_window -framefile C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\maddog.txt -script C:\Emulation\emulators\daphne-singe\singe\maddog\maddog.singe

Your example the command line is pointing to the hitbox singe files.

Thanks,

Ron

So,

I would do this. Copy a framefile for each game into your C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\framefile directory. Rename each to be what is in your xml database. Bring up HyperHQ and point the rom path to the framefile directory, select Roms Only and that should filter your wheel with the correct names.

In HyperLaunchHQ. Make sure your Global Daphne Singe emulator rom extensions are set to singe. Go to your American Laser Games and select Emulators. Make sure your rom path there says "C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\Daphne Singe\singe". Lastly, make sure your xml database has the correct names in it. Did you get it from HyperList?

If this doesn't fix it, let me know. Probably should post your HyperLaunch.log (with CODE tags this time please).

Thanks,

Ron

Still a no go. Crime Patrol 1 and Drug Wars load perfectly fine, but the other 5 ALG titles freeze. I can pretty much confirm that Daphne is launching in all cases, and is attempting to launch the framefiles, but something is tripping it up. Possibly something with the framefiles themselves?

Again, I appreciate all your help with this. I have an entire office looking forward to playing these so my dedication might seem a little excessive :)

EDIT Cancel that! I finally got it working by pointing Hyperspin to the batch files instead of the framefiles and putting an EXIT string to the end so it automatically closes. I renamed the batch files to match the folder names (maddog, lbh, etc) and set HyperHQ to load those instead of the SINGE files. Works like a champ now.

Again, thanks for all the help Ron. Your guide was very informative.

Has anyone been able to get the Mad Dog McCree II DVD working? I tried the installer, but it says it needs the CD. I have everything else working (big thanks to Ron!)

Posted

Glad to help.

But, we are going to need a little more info than "doesn't work". ;)

Does it run from the bat file?? What is broke and what error are you getting??

Thanks,

Ron

Sorry, I just presumed no one else was able to get it working. The installer appears to be for a CD ROM and not DVD, which I have. The installer says "The CDROM disc does not appear to be valid. Insert Mad Dog 2 CDROM and try again."

Posted

Dang I hate being right sometimes ;) . The installler works for Mad Dog 1 DVD as well...I tried using the MD1 installer for MD2, but that didn't work. I'm going to keep messin' with it, if I find anything I will post.

I've got a weird problem I can't figure out. I've set the system up exactly as you described, and all of my Action Max games are working perfectly with the exception of 38 Ambush Alley. When I try to launch the game, Daphne gives the "bad command line" window. I check the daphne log and it says it can't find 38ambushalley.singe. But for some reason it says it's looking for 38ambushalley.sing with no e. I checked my framefile, spelled correctly there. I checked the frame_38ambushalley.txt file, everything is spelled correctly there too. I even downloaded all new files and tried again, still getting the same error with just this one game. Am I missing something here?

--DAPHNE version 1.0.10

--Command line is: C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\Actionmax\Daphne-Singe\daphne.exe singe vldp -x 800 -y 600 -fullscreen_window -noserversend -framefile C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\Actionmax\Daphne-Singe\singe/ActionMax/frame_38AmbushAlley.txt -script C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\Actionmax\Daphne-Singe\singe/ActionMax/38AmbushAlley.singe

Setting screen height to 600

Script C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\Actionmax\Daphne-Singe\singe/ActionMax/38AmbushAlley.sing does not exist.

Unknown command line parameter or parameter value:

Bad command line or initialization problem (see daphne_log.txt for details).

To run DAPHNE, you must specify which game to run and which laserdisc player you are using.

For example, try 'daphne lair noldp' to run Dragon's Lair in testing mode.

Jay,

Had to noodle on that one for a bit. Figured it out I think. Your path is too long. The total path length you have is over 80 characters. If my count is correct, 81 to be exact. I figure they are only allowing 80 characters as a path name. The other game names are not that long, therefore will launch correctly.

I tested and proved it. Moved my Singe directory inside a couple more, to match the number of characters you have, and it fails. It actually would not launch until I got it much shorter.

[EDIT]

Shortened it by 2 characters and it launched fine.

[/EDIT]

Thanks,

Ron
