This question feels insanely nooby, but what is F.T.P.???

What is F.T.P., what does that stand for, and where the hell is it?

I see all over the place people talking about getting art from F.T.P., working with it, etc.  I even see a forum talking about how to log on to it.  But I haven't seen any link to the site (if that's what it is), anything explaining what it is.

So, please, as if I was a complete moron, what is this thing and where is it?  I'm a platinum member, so I should have access.  Thanks!

FTP = file transfer protocol call

its basically a cloud where people can share Hyprspin artwork.  The FTP hosts "Un-Official"  user summit-ed artwork.  Artwork you MAY or MAY NOT find in the Download section or in HyperSync.

as a platinum member you have access to it.

you will need to download a FTP client such as Fileziilla

https://filezilla-project.org/

log in details are here

Thanks - I appreciate the patience!  I guess FTP is something people are using regularly, but I had no idea.  The only file sharing I've ever done is through torrents.

So.... when I try to log on to the server, FileZilla asks me for a Host, a Port, and a Password.  The login instructions say give me a Host, a Port, a Username, and a Password.  So where do I enter a Username?

I must be doing something wrong, because if I enter Host: files.hyperspin-fe.com;  Port: 221; and Password: [forum password], I get

"Protocol error: Unknown protocol identifier (0x50 0x50 0x48). Most likely connected to the wrong port."

Anyone have any insight?  I'm completely out of my depth here.  Thanks...

sorry for laughing... LOL, I guess some of us take for granted that we come from the days when IRC, TELNET, and FTP as well as usenets was something everyone on the internet knew about.. especially since they are what we used before the boom of the WWW

You mean FTP predates WWW?  Yeesh... I've never heard of it, and being 46, I was definitely around for the dawn of the worldwide web.

So, I mean, I'm glad to amuse you and all, but what am I doing wrong when I try to log on to the server?  Why isn't it asking me for a username?

What FTP are you trying to access? I assume hyperspin? your username should be your username and your password... the port information should be found somewhere on hyperspin. I'm not a platinum member so I don't know where they keep those details but I'm sure gigapig should be able to help you but your username should be whatever username you set up if not the one your currently using (and password) unless they have a specific username and password for everyone which I doubt.

The World WIde Web isn't that old.... prior to that everyone had unix shell accounts and mostly used TELNET, IRC, etc.

O man this is an awesome thread. FTP tried to be main stream but it was just way too nerdy lol. Don't get me wrong, I was one of those guys using fservers on IRC and connecting to people's FTPs. I remember one FTP program could search all over the web for public / open FTPs and you could use keywords to find files... but it never caught on. Heck I used to use server chats on America online back in the day and we stored large files on their email servers and used bots to auto transfer the files based on command requests sent in the chat rooms. That was awful over dialup though. P2P tried to be a replacement for FTP / IRC but it was crap and filled with fake files / viruses. Torrents really changed everything for file transfers. But yea I bring up FTP to people now a days and they have no clue what I'm talking about. Most websites use to use FTP for file downloads back in the day... you would see the FTP addresses on files they had available but even that's gone now.

I actually miss the days of FTP when I spent time downloading everything I could find.... I was more into it when I had an AMIGA because the IRC channels always kept us in the loop as well as the Telnet bbses lol.

you can either set up a permanent  connection

by clicking on the icon on top of "Host"  in the highlighted image

or do a quick connect by entering your user name.

YOUR LOG IN INFO

Host:files.hyperspin-fe.com

UserName: [email protected]

Password: YOUR FORUM PASSWORD

Port:221

and as the log info says NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS IN YOUR PASSWORD!!!!!!

No one has mentioned that the ftp is not really the place for sharing artwork that is being worked on anymore.

Sure grab what's there but use Hypersync for the official media.

Okay, I figured out the problem - I downloaded the Firezilla server rather than the client.  As I said, clueless.

But from what I'm gathering, gigapig, there's no real reason for me to be looking on the FTP?  I'm trying to get wheels and themes for PC Games, and it doesn't look like there's much on Hypersync (or much on emumovies for that matter).  I've started to just make some simple ones for myself, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

You see what I did there...?  lol...

Now we know what you are looking for we may be able to help but obviously the PC libray is massive.

The only users folders I remember having PC themes are.

Mine

Sandman

THK

You can also search (F3) but it takes ages.

There's a running thread that has the PC Wheel art in it. There are tons.

Should come up if you search for it.
