progets Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I'm just curious on how you guys run MAME. My version is over a year old and I'm wondering how often people update.
Suhrvivor Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I'm using MAME 0.175 (noNag build) with the latest merged 7ztorrentzipped romset and CHDs from Pleasuredome, currently 0.177. I run it through Rocketlauncher, of course, with fade, bezels and HLSL shaders to achieve better fidelity possible to the original.
phulshof Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I update every month, because otherwise I could not generate the XML files.
Avar Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I update monthly now as I find it's less of a hassle in the long run.
thatman84 Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I run 173 for now but when I get things running properly I am undecided on weather to update. rastan Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I'm just curious on how you guys run MAME. My version is over a year old and I'm wondering how often people update. For the longest time I had 139 and then 152... then I started updating every time a new build came out until they did that huge change when people couldn't just drop over the new version.. (I forget which version but it had lots of issues) i never updated after that. I don't think I'm missing much unless they added any new stuff for the shaders. as for new games.. they're always some obscure crap that nobody cared about anyways... not the bread & butter classics which have been there since the earliest versions of mame and probably work on any version of mame. every now and then I suppose they make a good one go from non-working to working but I hardly ever notice when that happens. with mame (after the updates with shaders, hlsl and all that) if it works it works.. I don't see the need to update anymore (or at least I don't keep updating every build) I will say this.. at some point I will get whatever newest build is out and just download the full set for that version as well as the CHDs.
rastan Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I update monthly now as I find it's less of a hassle in the long run. yeah, I stopped updating after the last major update before the issues with that build (i forget which one but the one that required us to start new as we couldn't just drop the new version to the folder) it would be hard for me to try to catch up now so when I do get a new version I will just get the full rom set for that version but the funny thing about mame is I could probably use the latest build with my old rom set and wouldn't even notice the games that don't work.
adamg Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 This thread brings to mind a question I have been meaning to look up. When a new set comes out, say 178, how does one update to the new version using the set that you have.I currently have a CHD set from 175 that I downloaded from Pleasuredome. If I wanted to update to the 177 CHD set (theoretically speaking) how would I do that to ensure that I joined at the highest ratio and ensure that I have the correct roms?

If I wanted to update to the 177 CHD set (theoretically speaking) how would I do that to ensure that I joined at the highest ratio and ensure that I have the correct roms? every update there is a update pack that comes out...as well as full rom set. so for example if i was looking to update my 177 romset to 178 I would only download the update pack to update 177 to 178... basically unzip the update to your mame roms and let it add and replace whatever files have been updated. keep in mind that you should be updating when each set comes out... meaning if you want to update 175 to 177.. you need to add the updates for 176 and 177
rastan Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 That's not the way you should update. You should download the update pack and use either clrmamepro or romvault and the dat for the new version to rebuild the set. The easier/lazier way is to just rename your current set directory to match the new one and point your client to that. It will download what's missing, then use TorrentCheck to remove all the files that aren't needed. Regarding the original topic, I update my sets on every release and use regular MAME. that's what i get for following instructions form other places. I think I've done that for two updates and haven't noticed anything not working so that's a good thing... but will be updating the correct way for now on. lucky for me whenever I do update to the latest build in the future I'm just going to get the full set.
Avar Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 yeah, I stopped updating after the last major update before the issues with that build (i forget which one but the one that required us to start new as we couldn't just drop the new version to the folder) it would be hard for me to try to catch up now so when I do get a new version I will just get the full rom set for that version but the funny thing about mame is I could probably use the latest build with my old rom set and wouldn't even notice the games that don't work. That was waaaaay back though right? Just curious now cuz I dropped mine right in recently but I believe it was a fresher update.

Just curious now cuz I dropped mine right in recently but I believe it was a fresher update. wasn't that long ago... a few months back i believe. 171 is the last one I did. 172 came out and we couldn't just drop the .exe to the folder but I remember having other issues with it specifically the direct input so I just went back to 171 and stayed there. I heard everything was smooth with 173 and other releases since. one day I will catch back up and just get whatever the current rom set and chd is.. but as of right now 171 works for me...

I just hit up the latest monthly release and I'm pretty happy with it. No complaints yet but I haven't tested it much.
progets Posted September 9, 2016 Author Posted September 9, 2016 A lot of interesting comments. I don't think I'll ever want/need to update MAME monthly. I have updated it before and know the process but like other have said, little changes in a year let alone a month. Also like others have said, I had a working .171 and broke it somewhere along the way so I just went back to my trusty .166 which I kept on the machine, just in case I don't know about others but I play MAME the most but update it less often then other emulators. Especially RetroArch since I use it for many console systems and its updates tend to have big impovements/enhancements.

danwelsh Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I use mamearcade64 .177 and matching romset of course I'm lovin my arcade
danwelsh Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I noticed a big improvement in gtfore06 from version 172 which I was using to 177. Now that I compile my own with no nag and learned how to use clrmame there really isn't a reason to not stay up to date in my opinion. It only takes a couple hours anyways and I usually just compile and rebuild my set on my marquee monitor anyways.....while the never ending setting up hyperspin art, etc continues I'm lovin my arcade
