Pyramid_Head Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Has anyone else had any issues with HS freezing and/or locking up Windows completely? Ever since I installed the Spring update for 8.1 from Windows update HS just randomly locks up Windows completely. I was wondering if it's just me? Other programs such as XBMC and Mame etc.. run just fine. I was thinking maybe it's a flash issue with this new Windows update?
zerojay Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Man, I just installed it and this post was the first thing I read after installing it. Everything seems fine to me so far.
Pyramid_Head Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Yeah, it must be something on my end as I just re installed 8.1 and it still locks up Windows completely. I have to manually power it off via the power button as the reset button just resets to a blank screen. I've never had this problem before. Possibly hardware related? I'm afraid to run Memtest just to find a million errors I can't afford any new sticks since the prices sky rocketed.
Pyramid_Head Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 *Update* I noticed when I remove all the themes from main menu ie just having wheel images it doesn't freeze at all. I wonder why this is happening all of a sudden?
Pyramid_Head Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Ran Memtest for a few hours it isn't that. Hmm sorry for the constant bumping of this. I have been using HS since 2008 and this is the first time this has ever happened.
zerojay Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Memtest for a few hours is useless. Run it for at least 24-48 hours before saying that you think RAM is not a problem.
Pyramid_Head Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 I can't run it that long as I use this PC for various tasks. I think some how the mp4 videos are the cause. If I take out the themes ( which won't play videos anyway) it doesn't freeze at all. I seriously hope it isn't the ram I can't afford to spemd the ridiculous prices they charge for DDR3 now. I paid like $70 for these two 8gb sticks off New egg last year now they're like $170. Some people can afford to do that I can't.
zerojay Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Make sure you have no flv videos as those still cause freezes.
Pyramid_Head Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 I made sure. I deleted those long ago. Even re downloaded the videos from the EmuMovies ftp with no luck. Really strange :/
zero dreams Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I'm not on Win 8 but I have had issues if the main menu style is set to pin and the size is too large in HyperHQ. The initial settings kinda screw HS and I'm not sure how that info would help you out other than to look at your wheel settings closer but it's a start. I point this out because it happens when HS starts, but it never locked me down though. HyperLaunch | HyperWiki | HyperSearch | Intro | Evolution | FadeProject | Checker | Steam Wheel
Pyramid_Head Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 I'm leaning towards this isn't an 8/8.1.1 issue now. I'm not sure what is causing it. I'm definitely not switching to another frontend after all the years of work I've put into getting HS to where I have it now lol. Damn this sucks :/
Pyramid_Head Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 I think I figured it out. I believe the problem lies in one of my databases as I have many. Reason I think this, is because I removed all my databases and put in just the default ones that come with a clean HS installation and it doesn't lock up at all. So why would a database(s) cause my whole system to completely lock up?
kyoken Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 If you have any .png corrupted hyperspin hangs in a black screen.
relic Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 it may be a case your hyperspin files have been corrupted on most of its content i suggest you backup the old one and make a fresh new install to make sure it all fuctions well as that is one of the best solutions to solving problems 100%
Pyramid_Head Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 I don't believe it is any corrupted png files. I think one of the dbs might be corrupted though. But I don't understand how a corrupted db would completely lock up Windows? That's the thing that makes no sense to me lol. Thanks guys for the help though!
Pyramid_Head Posted April 21, 2014 Author Posted April 21, 2014 UPDATE! Seems it wasn't anything to do with HS at all. After trying out various hardware related things I ended up going into bios and setting it the default settings and now HS nor Windows locks up at all. I wish I knew what setting was causing it.

Pyramid_Head Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 LOL!! But yeah it makes no sense why something in the bios was the cause. But I'm not complaining
relic Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 LOL!! But yeah it makes no sense why something in the bios was the cause. But I'm not complaining its simple its like when windows doesent boot up sometimes on a drive then you find out if you go to bios and switch hardrives over windows will boot up again or its like your trying to run a fresh install of windows but the drive you have it in doesent pick up which seems to be the same solution so maybe your case it was just selecting the wrong drive to run it on. just be glad its not the virus that locks your hardrives up cause i ha dthat a couple of times i caught it back in the day when i had kazzaa and others like it it was nasty one but there was a way around to switch hardrives in bios but i also had windows on both hardrives that was where my luck came in im gla dyou got it sorted tho. 100%
Nocturnaloner Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Is there a compelling reason to not use Windows 8.1 when building a new Hyperspin PC? Should I stick with Win 7?
dougan78 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I think kega fusion has problems with Windows 8 so if you like that emulator stick with 7. It is supported until 2020 anyway..... Otherwise go for the gusto, I love Windows 8.1.1 on my work laptop.
Styphelus Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I'm on Windows 8.1.1 and Fusion runs perfectly fine. My only issue with it is it makes a quick screeching noise when I exit the emulator on hyperspin. Otherise no issues.
kyoken Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 +1 in windows 8.1.1, hyperspin runs at 100% without issues.
