Source Material Acquisition Program

Note: I cannot emphasize enough that this is something we really do want to do to help you out as a Content Creator. Please do not be shy about making requests. We all know you can work magic but we don't want you to have to and we'll do everything we can to reduce your workload, give you back time to enjoy the finer elements of your work, and to just enjoy more creative freedom in general No one will be frowned upon in the least for making source requests.

To all Content Creators: If you're working on a system and you're struggling to find source material please let me know and we can keep track in this thread. While we can often find what we need online, I do appreciate that sometimes good source material just isn't easy to come by. Rather than slaving away for hours and hours trying to polish/redraw something that's extremely low resolution or at a bad angle or just rough in general, there are people in the community who can help track down better source material or even acquire the item and generate best-quality scans of it in its entirety. While I know you're all capable of working magic, and I've seen you do it over the years, I value your time and feel you deserve to work with the best. I can't speak for everyone but I know I'm not personally made of money though, so anything that gets listed here I'll try to prioritize my way through and get for you as able. Cheers!

Quick side note: My personal ideal for this is for sets benefiting from this to remain plat, but as always people can do w/e they want with their art. I encourage members to refrain from posting raw scans or finished art in bulk where it can overburden the server.

If anyone wants to help out, there's no obligation or limit on how little or how much someone gives. No expectations, just teammates helping each other out how we can and we'll all do our best  I intend to add a membership level much like Content Creator for those who help the team out via source contributions to give people yet another avenue for achieving full membership.

Scanning requirements for participants: We need the best quality scans possible with the best colour accuracy and the highest resolution you can get. We're just starting so I don't personally have a much advice to give as far as scanners go but it does seem you can get flatbeds that can match the resolution and quality of high end scanners for about $100.

Note to contributors, whether or not you keep the source material for personal use or collection, please be sure to take scans of everything, no matter how innocuous it may seem, or just avoid throwing anything out altogether. Ie. registration cards, coupons, the internal artwork, the manual, etc. This will help out a lot with future recreation goals and for our new Pause media support. Ideally we'll all hold anything collected to a very protective collection standard.

okay...what does this mean ? are you going to shield off parts of the forums ? are we no longer supposed to post works in progress?

Are we going back to the olden days where not only the development of hyperspin is secret but also the art development?

Seriously I'm very happy with the degree of openness we have achieved here over the passed year. I remember the insurrection of DrMaxwell and other users. I remember the frustration of users creating artwork only to have it bad mouthed and set aside as "not good enough" or even worse to have the work completed and then weeks later have the entire thing be"officially released" a second time because behind the curtain people were working on the same set and nobody felt it was necessary to inform the group that was working "in the other room". 

I remember my own frustration after slaving away at the gameboy wheels for months with my fellow enthusiasts, the paint hadn't dried yet or the HQ set was announced and within weeks was done.  gameboy had not received any attention for years prior to that. it was so infuriating to see the work we'd have done be shoved aside and remade.

I don't believe in keeping secrets when it comes to artwork development, which why I tend to be sceptical about the reasons people put forth to justify secrecy. it just slows development.

No we're not going to shield off parts of the forums whatsoever. No different than normal stuff and the only reason I even said to avoid posting stuff is because a. these files are huge and if I were to, say, post full-resolution scans of everything for any given game, I'll be kicking the server in the balls and sending the maintenance costs through the roof and b. contributors will have ultimately forked out a lot for the scans and I'm happy for them to do what they want with them. People can still do w/e they want with their artwork. I'll change the wording if it makes you happy. 

We're not keeping secrets, everything is advertised here and everywhere, and that's the exact reason for this thread. Again, the only reason for any control on this whatsoever is that servers and bandwidth cost a hell of a lot more when we post massive files in such a manner that the internet at large can post them thousands of times over. I'm going to find a convenient way for us to store scans for artists so they don't have to ask everytime they want something but posting raw 4000x4000 images ad nauseum of stuff most people will never benefit from is asinine.

This is clear. Thank you. And you're on the mark with the maintenance costs. It seems I have a psd ptsd from earlier dramas when it comes to artwork development. I was doubting my self after writing that up. I doubted if what I read was actually what I read. On the ripping of part. I was talking to kondorito earlier and he had a good idea about watermarking the stuff we put out. But that needs some coordinating if we choose to put that through.

It's ok. After re-reading what I wrote I can see how it could come off that way. I understand. I just really want to convey that things are different than they used to be and I think everything we're doing is coming from the right place.

The watermarking idea is something I've thought about but I don't wanna add a chore to the artwork people create so iunno, I guess that's more up to the community. I'd feel weird imposing that. I do know that if I was an enterprising d-bag, the site's ripe for abuse though. Back in the day we didn't really have to worry about it because we were the only show in town and artwork files were a lot smaller. Now, especially with the new UHD work, it definitely drives up the forum's overhead. Not saying that to hinder the creative review process by any means, just wanna clarify why I'd like to avoid posting swaths of massive images where they're guaranteed to make bandwidth usage skyrocket haha I'll find a place for us to store this stuff.

I always found that less convenient than FTP though but I guess that's just personal preference.

correct me if im wrong.  but the problem with ftp vs the vault is you can see the image previews on google drive but you cant on ftp.  which would be fine if we were just storing finished files on the ftp but we collect source art and its handy to be able to preview it
