MAME .153 advice?

Right, so I have finally got around to updating my MAME set from .149 to .153. I have been out the there and downloaded the complete Rom and CHD set for .153 and looking forward to using it!

Now what I would like is a bit of advice as Im not a fan of setting MAME up and would like to do this only once. Som of the questions I have is:

-What is the best EMU for this? I like to be able to tweak the settings, easy controls and graphics etc?

-Do the CHDs really make that much of a difference?

-Will all my artwork and databases etc still work with this version of MAME?

-Is there anything else out there that runs these better than MAME (without renaming anything)?

-Is there any hidden things I need to know before I jump ship?

I know this topic is covered about a godzillion times, however all this information is scattered and Im not sure how much is relevant to this version of MAME or even HS.

I use Mamuifx, find it in jumpstiles ftp folder. You don't really need to set it up, just set the path in HLHQ. Perhaps the only thing to set are controls.

You'll need the CHD'S if you want a full set, and if you want to play the games then they are necessary. I've read elsewhere what a Rom horder you are

If you mean your themes and wheel art then yes they work.

Ps. If you want hiscore support make sure you create a "dats" folder in your mame directory. There are 4 dat files that go in there. There's a "copy to your mame folder" zip in jumpstiles folder also.

I'm glad someone chimed in, I was just trying to find a good answer, and yours makes sense in my case, because I use 360 controllers.

I also had trouble with the other version and using a mouse/wiimote as a lightgun, so switching to the Directinput version sorted it out.

The one without direct input recognizes only raw inputs as MAME commands. The big advantage of it is that it allows to have multiple mouses for gun games. Controllers work fine with it, but if you use some keymaper you could have problems recognizing the presses.

The one with direct input, allows to the emulator to recognize "simulated" key presses from keymapper programs like autohotkey. This has as advantage that you could control your save and load states through HyperPause. However, direct input does not allow multiple mouses.

My choice is to use the direct input one, and only for gun games configure the alternative raw input mame.
