Hyperspin won't go into emulators + ESC pauses Hyperspin instead of exiting

Hello to all!

I've searched around the board, but unfortunately I couldn't find the same issue with a solution, so I decided to start a new topic.

I have a hyperspin setup with different Emulators, and I was used to start those with the "Enter" key.

This won't be working anymore.
When I hit now the "Enter" key, Hyperspin jumps back to the emulator selection to the default emulator instead of starting the selected emulator.

Also the "ESC"-Key won't exit the Hyperspin anymore. It toggles now between pause and un-pause hyperspin.
I can only leave hyperspin with [ALT]+[F4] now.

The setting file is configured correctly and is unchanged in the relevant section.
I've also compared it with a second Hyperspin-System I am running, which makes no problems and can't see any differences.

The Log-File of Hyperspin looks like that:

07:33:56 PM |  HyperSpin Started
07:33:56 PM |  Going FullScreen
07:33:56 PM |  Checking for updates
07:33:56 PM |  Update Check Complete
07:33:56 PM |  Startup program unavailable
07:33:56 PM |  Error intializing joysticks
07:33:56 PM |  Menu Mode is multi
07:33:56 PM |  Loading Main Menu.xml
07:33:56 PM |  Main Menu.xml successfully loaded
07:33:56 PM |  Main Menu wheel loaded successfully
07:33:58 PM |  Loading Main Menu.xml
07:33:58 PM |  Main Menu.xml successfully loaded
07:33:58 PM |  Main Menu wheel loaded successfully
07:33:59 PM |  Loading Main Menu.xml
07:33:59 PM |  Main Menu.xml successfully loaded
07:34:00 PM |  Main Menu wheel loaded successfully
07:34:04 PM |  Quiting Hyperspin
07:34:04 PM |  Bye!

So every time I try to start an emulator the system only starts the main menu.xml again and not the emulator.

Does anyone have an idea what I could try?

Thanks in advantage!

This in addition:

When I change Hyperspin to "single" Mode, so it will start in a defined emulator, than I can select and start without problems the game with the "Enter"-Key and can also leave the game with "ESC".

But trying to end Hyperspin with "ESC" will only pause and un-pause Hyperspin again.

And another additional information:

An vertical setup of hyperspin with his own folders have the same issue.

Also my backup on another harddrive.

It seems, that something in my system ist configured wrong. But I cant figure it out.

So do you think it is Windows related?

Can you screenshot me the controls tab in HyperHQ?

Can you also check the exit key in rocketlauncher?  Maybe screenshot it as well?  Should be On Global, General Settings, Controls.

thank you for your tries to help me adamg!

Here are the screenshots you asked for.
In rocketlaucher i've found two sections with exit, so I made pictures from both

The controls look right in HQ so something else must be interfering. It's important to note what you are using for controls. Arcade (ipac)?, Joypads? and what kind sometimes (xbox/ps, tankstick, wireless?) Ipacs and stuff usually have their own config programs. Joypads usually need an external keymapper like joytokey or xpadder. Are any of these being used?

Also, exiting of HS can be set here:

Most arcade setups disable this as they don't want users backing right out to windows.

I've had also the suggestion that one of those are interferring the commands.

Actually I disabled the keymapper program (it won't starts by system bootup anymore), to get sure, that it won't cause the problem.

But it have not changed the problems in Hyperspin.

Also the "Exit Hyperspin" Option is set in my System. I used to shutdown the computer with it, when I close Hyperspin.

What I also discovered, as I tried to solve the problem yesterday evening:

When I start in "single" mode I can directly access one defined emulator (for example mame) like I written in a comment earlier.

But only the up and down selection of games and the start is working as expected.

When I want to switch to other Letters like B, C,... or open the favorit list, then no games shows up anymore and also no textes from hyperspin appears.

Only a common background and the joystick animation at the bottom of the screen.

I think I have to install the main system again, or have someone a idea I should try first?

Have a think about any programs you might have installed between now and when it was working correctly last. Try running Hyperspin with as many background problems closed as you can, including steam which has it's own control malarky that can effect desktop input (though usually more controller related than keyboard.)

Might sound silly but see if you can run it with a different keyboard, I once had a keyboard where the shift key stuck occasionally and it caused all sorts of dramas like this.

Problems like these all you can do is go through step by step from the ground up, but yeh maybe a fresh install or something. Even just try an extra dummie install of HyperSpin to see if that works in its basic form.

Don't go deleting anything until you have something new up and running would be my advice.

The question has been asked but I don't see where it was answered.  What kind of control are you using?  Joystick, game controller, keyboard?  And would it be possible to remove all of that and just use a usb keyboard for testing?

Have you added any artwork?  You said earlier that sync would not work, so does that mean you do not have any artwork?

Hello Row14,

the system I'm using is only running hyperspin, it have no other tasks running it.
I also disabled the keymapper applications and nothing changes.

The Keyboard I also use on my second hyperspin system without problems.

I'm using Keyboard as an input.
When it works (like my second system) it is connected with an J-Pac system on a Jamma-Cabinet.

What Do you mean with artwork? I have many graphics included. Different styles fot the different emulators and games.

As I can'T find any solution so far, I've connected the Hyperspin-HDD on the working second system and there a no problems with the hyperspin emulator selection. It works fine.
So it have to be something on the computer installation from the not working system.

I've installed Windows 7 - 32 Bit fresh on the second computer, but after the installation it will still not work.
I can't believe it. I dont have installed anything else right now than Windows, so ne Program can mess the hyperspin start up.
And the hyperspin HDD works fine on the second system.

Actually I have no idea what i should do now... :-/

Maybe the Windows installation is not so fresh I will think, becaus I've started the new installation inside the booted old Windows system.
I have to do this again outside Windows with formating the System HDD first.
So the System can't transfer some (broken?) drivers from the old system.

To be continued...

The second try to install Win7 comes to the same result.

Also a different Keyboard makes no difference.

Now I try a fresh installation of Windows 8 as next step.

Installed now Win 8 and still have the issue.

What did I overseen?

Now it could only an hardware issue, I think.
But what it could be?

The ArcadeVGA5000?

Sorry when I extend this thread. But maybe its an help for future resachers to find out what they can do if they run into the same problems.
The Hyperspin-System I try to get to run have the Version Number 1.3.2.0
It worked good on this system in the past until the issue. And it runs also actually good on my second system.
Now I've downloaded the actual Hyperspin-Version 1.5.1.0 and ithe navigation works on this system fine. I can select the wheels and can exit the emulators and hyperspin.
So there must be a difference between those two setups I have to find to get my old system running.
I don't think it will work only to merge both system together, right?

I vaguely remember a bug like this, do you have speakers plugged into the non working system? Have only skimmed the thread, so apologies if this has already been suggested.

Actually I had the system with and without plugged speakers when the problem appeared.

Actual Update: I have nov configured the 1.5.1 Version of Hyperspin like 1.3.2 was, and it is still running, like I want it.

Now I have only to setup the system itself again, that it will automatically starts hyperspin during boot up and so on.

Hopefully the fresh Hyperspin with the actual Version solved my Problem. But it was a load of work to get it running how it was.

Thank you all for your tries to help me!
