I am also having the same issue since updating Windows 10 version 2004.

I did a little digging in the Event Viewer for Windows and see the error is tied to a fault with ntdll.dll in the System32 directory.

I tried running the application in compatibility mode for older versions of Windows, and had no luck there.

I will keep troubleshooting the issue.  If I find a solution, I will post it here.  If anyone else has any ideas, please share.

So, 17 hours, a little sleep, and lots of coffee later, I have figured out the root cause of the problem for me. I hope the novel below helps you with your issue as well.

Really Short Version:
I had to roll back my Windows build version from 2004 to 1909. I also removed myself from the Windows Insider Program.

Really Long Version:
As I stated in my previous post, Windows Event Viewer was showing me that HyperSpin was crashing due to a fault with the 64-Bit ntdll.dll file.  I did a little research into ntdll. ntdll is actually a really interesting library. It is a low level API library that is available prior to the WIN32 process being up and running. Kernel32.dll, a library many programers will know well, leverages many of the functions in ntdll. A lot of applications like antivirus use the ntdll library for launching services at the start of Windows bootup. It is also, sometimes, used to mask function calls with user interface applications. I found lots of examples of Malware using this "feature". I could keep going for a while about what I found in that rabbit hole, but this is already feeling long-winded. Back to the topic...

Something I did not mention in my previous post was that I had recently experienced a failure of a Radeon graphics card in this machine. The card's fans were not spinning and I would lose display almost immediately after powering up. Windows would still boot and I could hear the audio from an output on the motherboard. At the time, my best guess was that I was having a heatsink or some other board issue on the GPU. I have a spare GPU, so I decided to save that troubleshooting effort for a later date. After digging myself out of the ntdll hole, my GPU failure shot back into focus. I decided to check the nttdll.dll file to see if it had changed after the upgrade to 2004. I didn't do anything crazy like mining the library with IDA, but I did find the the file size had changed significantly between versions. I took that information and spun up one of my lab machines to hunt down the root cause.

I did a clean install of the Windows 10 v1909 release image (no security patches). My goal here was to walk my way toward v2004 to find the exact point the ntdll changes and hopefully bricks HyperSpin and my GPU (fingers seriously crossed). I had to enable the Windows Insider Program on my lab machine due to the fact that v2004 doesn't actually have a commercial release until May 28th. What I ended up finding was that the dll was actually changing with a preview build released for v1909 (19631.1 mn_release). HyperSpin, HyperHQ, HyperTheme and RetroArch all stopped launching on my lab machine after this hop. Now onto my desktop with the failed GPU...

The first thing I did here was opt out of my participation in the Windows Insider Program. After that, I used the Windows Recovery feature to roll back my Windows 10 install to a previous build. This took my version back to 1909 and required some security patching. My next step was to test HyperSpin and RetroArch on my desktop.  Both applications launched like a champ and ran for 30 minutes each before I called it good and closed both.  With that issue cleared, I turned with hopeful eyes to my poor, battle fallen GPU. I tenderly brushed the light coating of dust off and provided some words of encouragement to the old soldier. I installed the card, flipped the PSU switch, and silently prayed before pressing the power button on my PC case.  Sweet Baby Jeebus!!!  My card had come back from the dead!!!  All is now right in my kingdom of emulation!

Removing yourself from the Insider Program is only a temporary solution as this update will surely become official sooner or later.

Is there even a way to disable updates on Win10? I am still win7 so I really don't know but it would be one of the first things I did. I would only ever go looking at updates if something specific I was doing was not working correctly.  Generally if all is working for you I would suggest waiting for an SP update (is that still a thing?) Then again I am personally only interested in retro gaming for my setup, it does not ever need to connect to internet, it will never need antivirus, I care nothing for the hundreds of updates Outlook or Powerpoint (or whatever MS bs) need for "security reasons", etc.

Anyway, I am sure the HS devs will sort it out. I guess there is always a chance this will be sorted out by MS themselves before the official update goes live? ................. haha rofl, good one, I kill me :)

Hey gents. Is there any way you can test disabling DEP just for hyperspin?

Turn off DEP

DEP or Data Execution Prevention is a Windows in-built system-level memory protection feature that protects your system from damage caused by viruses and other security threats. However, some programs are not compatible with DEP feature in Windows and cause a 0xc0000005 error.

To turn DEP off:

  • Sign in to Windows as Administrator
  • Press ‘Windows+R’ and type sysdm.cpl. Hit Enter
  • Click ‘Advanced’ tab and then click the ‘Settings’ button
  • Click on Data Execution Protection tab and click ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select’
  • Click ‘Add’ button and then browse and add all the executable (.exe) files that are causing the issue
  • Click ‘OK’
  • Restart the system and try running the programs

I gave disabling DEP a try early in my troubleshooting efforts.  HS and RetroArch still failed to launch after the change and a reboot.

I am hoping that the 1909 preview build ntdll change won't make it into the commercial release of 2004.  We will see in a few days...

Hello! I had Windows 10 v1909 too and Hyperspin, HyperHQ and HyperTheme were ok . Two days ago, I updated Windows 10 from 1909 to 2004 (final May Update 2020) and Hyperspin and other exes crashed. I could not fix the problem. I have had to return Windows 10 v1909. Seems to be a similar situation to that of Windows 10 v1083, when Hyperspin had to be updated to 1.5.1 version.

I am testing other builds of v2004 on a virtual machine (It's a clean install with DEP enabled and here I have a small Hyperspin v1.5.1 and RocketLauncher with system Game Boy only), and this is the result (the process runs but consuming 100% and does not appear on screen). The best thing at the moment is to return or stay on v1909 and install stopupdates10 to prevent updating Win 10.

i am on win 10 1909 on 1 PC and win 10 2004 on another. have the same problem on both.. i started with HQ and RL on the 1909 Pc .. copied the files over on network transfer to the new 2004 Pc and now both have stopped working.

HS works on 1903 and 1909, just give admin privileges to HyperSpin, RocketLauncher and check if the problem is related to Windows defender.

On HTPCs and Arcade cabs it would be better to use LTSC, currently at 1809. It does not upgrade version and has 10 years support for security updates.

Welcome to my world.

I've been here for over a year now. Any chance HS might get updated. This has been a long time coming and because of work I have to remain in the fast track of windows insider and I manually launch games through rocket launcher for a year already with a normally setup HS lol Hehe

Have you heard of dual booting ?

Just have 2 windows setups on your computer, one with version 1909 and the other with your up to date windows.

I copied my Windows.old folder with the 1909 files to one of my external drives (good thing cause I deleted the actual Windows.old folder from my C:\)..but anyways, i'm in the process of replacing a few of the folders in System that referenced the .dll up in the post up top.  Will see how that goes.

Event Viewer shows some faulty .dll's:

I will attempt to drill deeper by just replacing the files with the ones from 1909 and see if that works...what else do i have to lose? lol

What i did manage to find when doing this was that HyperSpin remained running in the Task Manager, while not fulling loading...a had a couple BSOD but nothing a quick restore couldn't fix.  I reverted everything back to 2004.  I'm removing the Win 10 2004 SDK and installing the 1903 SDK.  Couldn't hurt anything...will report back when done.
