The HyperSpin 2 early access beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

Mixing new and old Hyperspin set-ups

Hi,

I'm very new to Hyperspin but have managed to set-up some basic emulators (MAME, etc.) with the help of Hyperlaunch HQ.

I've tried really hard but am really struggling with some of the more complex emulators but do have them working on another drive that someone else set-up using an older version of Hyperspin (pre-HS HQ).

What files or directories do I need to copy across to my new drive? Will the new version of HS be able to use these files or do I need to adjust them?

I've had several failed attempts at getting into HS and fear that I'm about to give in again :banghead:

Any help would be appreciated,

TC

To be honest its a good day of hard work, but it will be worth it.

Clean slate the lot. Download the HS package, update everything with GIT. Your a Platinum Member so download the HyperSync and start downloading all the media for the systems you already have set up.

then just copy over all your emulators and roms. Your Emus will MOSTLY be already configured, so then its jus a case of pointing HLHQ at the emus and roms.

HS has changed so much the only thing worth keeping is the roms and emus. Its a pain but it will pay off sooooooo much in the long run.

Depending on your internet is the longest part. Downloading MAME and Amiga Vids in MP4 takes forever!

Good luck anyways bro :)

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping you weren't going to say that! :stoned:

I haven't got GIT, so will get it and have a read. I have about 10 programs now most starting Hyper...this and that. I wish some of these could be merged, it's a big learning curve, especially when most of the youtube help videos are outdated and talk about getting modules, etc. :/

I have all the media on the drive, so that's not a problem.

I think a day of hard work would be fine but that is if you knew what you are doing - I don't :turtle:

I guess I will try to sort one at a time. Are there any difficult emulators that I should avoid for now?

Thanks,

TC

If you dont want git installed you can go to browsing files section HL git page and download a zip then you have the latest

Old HS installs probably means old emulators in a lot of cases. I don't personally know which emulators you could be talking about that are complex to set up besides the commodore stuff. If I were you, here's what I'd do.

New install of Hyperspin

New INstall of Hyperlaunch

Set up Git

Update

Create a folder called Emulators (I keep mine in my hyperlaunch directory but it doesn't matter).

Now, pick a system. Say SNES. Go into hyperHQ, add system Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Close HyperHQ. You're done with it.

Go into HyperlaunchHQ.

Find your Super Nintendo Tab, go the modules tab, and see every emulator that you can use for that system. (No one talks about downloading modules because now they come stock with hyperlaunch. You already have them at this point).

Pick an emu say Snes9x. (I use mednafen). Search google for the most up to date version. Download.

Create a folder in your emus directory called something like "Snes9x_v1.2_32bit". Unzip emulator there. Open emulator. Run a rom.

If that works, go back to HyperlaunchHQ. Go to the "Global" tab on the left, then on the right click the "Emulators" tab.

Scroll until you find Snes9x. Double click on it. Set up the path to the emu.

Lastly, go to your Super Nintendo tab and click the "Emulators" tab. Choose the Snes9x emulator, and then set your rom path.

Go to the games tab, do a system audit, click a game, then run it from HyperlaunchHQ.

If it works, you've set up an emulator.

All of this should reasonably take you less than ten minutes, not including getting up to date with hyperspin and GIT, and it is essentially the same steps to set up every single system. If I were you, I'd download a version of every emulator that there is a module for, for every system. That's just me, though. Essentially, once you get the hang of it, its is very easy and fast to set up systems and emulators, and like I told the guy who'd bought one of those premade hard drives, there isn't anything but roms and media worth keeping.

Thanks everyone.

I will try one last time. I'm going to wipe the drive and follow all the steps. I'm guessing I should leave Commodore, Daphne and less common systems 'til last?

I'll get the latest versions of the emulators as suggested, but can I get any information from the old Hyperspin drive for systems that I have trouble with? I'm thinking maybe read xml files to get set-ups, shortcuts, tweeks or loading screens, etc?

I have spent a lot of time getting nowhere but if I can get a simple set-up working this weekend, I will be happy to plod on :D

I wouldn't wipe the drive, just make a new folder. Reinstall hyperspin in another folder. Through hyperHQ, you want to then add every system you want. (This is first and foremost). Now, your media folder and your database folder you should keep. The database folder may be out of date, but it may also have a few dbs that are harder to find. I'd merge the media and database folders first, and tweak later. Also, put your roms in your new installation directory. That is pretty much all you should keep.

Between these three emulators (Mess, Mednafen, and Mame) you will have covered dozens and dozens of systems and thousands of thousands of games. Set these three emulators up first. These emulators are not always the best for each system, but they work. I'm trying to count how many systems you'll be able to emulate in my head with just those three and I can't.

Maybe for systems like commodore and daphne, you DO want to keep the emulator setups, now that I think about it. Just to have a frame of reference.

I've seen some great tutorials somewhere as well.

You mean the one that says "How to install HyperSpin" on your signature? You mean that one? :flute:

Just follow one of Gigas videos on setting up HyperSpin 3 that's in Polemicists signature too.

Thanks I have used the Giga Guides - they were the most helpful, wish there were more. I did set-up MAME but struggled with some others that I tried but I'm going to restart as I almost understand HSHQ now.

Does anyone know of a good guide that describes what the xml, database, settings and modules do?

Thanks again for all your assistance, I'm hoping to master this soon and get some weird and wonderful wheels on the go :dancing2:
