You should just select Retropad and press X. It should change to retrokeyboard.

it just stays on retropad wont let me change anything from rgui, am i supposed to have a 360 pad set up to change it?

Works fine for me. What version are you using?

tried with both the links on the first page, options i get are joypad, joypad w analog, mouse, multitap, justifier, justifires, none. should it be in with those options? i downloaded i presumed the latest nightly build guess it was the wrong one, its letting me bind them now thanks guys anyway :)

Hi all!

Well this is a learning curve! I started setting this up this morning, and so far have MAME working (using MAME) and had Nintendo 64 working using Project 64.

However, I've now come to configure Retroarch for N64 and have hit a snag...

I followed the guide, but I've either missed something or I am not understanding something...

I can launch a game using Retroarch GUI, but when I try to launch using HyperLaunchHQ, then I get an error saying retroarch-core-options.cfg is missing.

I set up a .cfg file for Mupen64 and saved it as Nintendo 64.cfg

Not sure what I'm missing or not grasping, so would love a pointer!

Cheers!

Thanks to OP for the guide. I'm new to all of this, but managed to set things up nicely by following along.

Some initial frustration when my games wouldn't launch while I was certain I had set the XML files and modules set correctly, but this was apparently due to the HyperLaunch service still running.

After killing it everything worked like a charm. Saves a lot of time installing and configuring emulators, and some games seem to launch way faster now as well.

After I set up some more systems and configure my themes, I'll delve into finetuning the individual cores and setting up some nice shaders and stuff. Thanks again, up until yesterday I hadn't even heard of RetroArch :D

If I recall, that's an error with one of the recent releases of the Retroarch module. It's looking for the file retroarch-core-options.cfg in your retroarch/configs folder, but (and I don't remember exactly) I think the module had it spelled wrong or something. When's the last time you updated the hyperlaunch module? Also, you need to make sure that file is in your config folder. Retroarch should create it. If updating the module doesn't work, head over to hyperlaunch.net, there's a thread about it. You can as a last resort, edit the AHK but that should not be necessary.

That is not newbie friendly, I'm sorry haha.

Try this:

And I'm assuming you have GIT all set up, if you don't, do that first.

1: Do a pull on your hyperlaunch-3 folder and let it update

2: Open hyperlaunch-3 folder

3: Right click and copy the contents.

4: Navigate to your actual hyperlaunch folder and paste the contents - When it asks if you want to replace files, click yes.

(You for sure want to replace hyperlaunch.exe and the module folder, at least)

Here's the thread about your problem from Hyperlaunch.net: http://www.hyperlaunch.net/forum/showthread.php?348-Retroarch-retroarch-core-options-not-found&highlight=RetroArch&p=3964#post3964

OH! And welcome to the forums. :D

Thanks for the speedy reply! This is a fresh install as of this morning, and it was a GIT pull :-)

I'll have a read of the other stuff!

Edit : I can't figure out a) why I still have the issue if it's fixed, and B) where I am supposed to edit the /config out of the module?

Wow.. this stuff is heavy going in the beginning!

I got it working. For some reason my retroarch-core-options.cfg file was prefixed with a .

Renamed it and it's working now.

retroarch-core-options.cfg does it have a . infront of it ie .retroarch-core-options.cfg if so delete the . thats what was causing the issue for me.

do we have a list of what shaders to use for each core? i must admit i love retroarch its fantastic when you get the hang of it :)

Same here sucramjd. And i was thinking of putting up a list but it is mostly a personal thing. For example i dont like curved shaders. Most of the times i prefer to represent the mosr authentic feel to me.

Sabre for example is nice to show your friends but its boring after playing a game for a long time. Game Boy shaders are really cool because they feel like the real handheld, etc. Ive also been playing with xbr on the ds, but i use scanline shaders for 8bit and 16bit etc.

This week ill try PSX in RA and i am excited what it will show

On the other hand im still messing with all the aspect ratio setting and im thinking of a modifier button on my 360 pad to bind some of the emu functions to buttons like save states so i can ditch xpadder for rhat purpose

Well I made further progress - I removed Retroarch and grabbed the nightly build and the issue I was having no longer occurs.

However.. how do I get core info? There are info files with the cores, and I set the core info path to the cores folder, but no joy. I also tried moving the .info files from the cores folder into an info folder and pointing to that.

Any ideas?

I want to get the basics set up right before I start playing with shaders!

Nevermind, no idea what I did, but I'm getting core info now..!!

A list would be great - I'm having trouble even remembering what some of my old handhelds and consoles looked like! (being that I'm getting close to 50!)

You mention DS, which I need to go back to. Are you using a bezel with a split? If so how do you get so the screens are equal between the 2 parts of the bezel? Cheers.

Nope, only use one of the two screens through the core options. Playing on my htpc with only a couple of favorites like advanced wars.

Hi,

I just found out about RetroArch and it looks like the perfect solution to easily setup most of the systems in my cab. Thanks a lot for the great guide!

Two questions:

a) How do I setup bezels, for e.g. Atari Lynx or Gameboy?

B) I have an analog usb joystick and a digital usb joystick in a different usb port. Is it possible to use both of them at the same time for N64 emulation through RetroArch (i.e. my analog joystick as the analog stick and my digital joystick as the d-pad in the original N64 controller).

Thanks a lot in advance.

To see how to set up bezels (I presume that is the same as overlays), this is a great video :-

Anyone have advice on a shader for Sony PlayStation? Tekken 3 gives me a headache when I tried a couple of the usual suspects.

When im all done and 1.1 is out i could put up my list of used shaders for all systems

Turns out that overlays are indeed the same as bezels. For anyone interested, the discussion of overlays in this video starts at around 8:00.

Thanks!

I just saw this commit adding a screen gap option to the Desmume core. Should be in tomorrow's nightly.

I think Tekken 3 is a 480i game, so it can look weird with some shaders. CRT-Geom and CRT-Royale have interlacing detection that makes 480i games look pretty good, but you get a sort of slight shaking look like what happens in PCSX2 sometimes. If you turn off the interlacing detection in those shaders the scanlines are grouped wrong and you get a bad banding look. CRT-EasyMode looks pretty good with those games and doesn't have the shaking.

Thanks Awakened. Youve explained my.issues nicely and ill stick to crt-easymode. I use that one alot when im tired of experimenting with shaders and just want to play :)

I've settled on Royale with slotmask type 2 and sample mode 1 as my default shader for everything except handhelds. With those settings it looks closer to Easymode and Geom, but brighter and sharper than either. I also set my Previous Shader hotkey to right stick click in so I can easily cycle through the shaders I like. The Next/Previous Shader hotkeys only work with .cg/cgp files in your root shader folder though, so I had to figure out how to make Royale "portable" by including all its dependencies and editing it's files to point to them. Here's a zip of my shaders folder if you want to try it out. Console games look kind of neat on the Gameboy shaders too :P
