newoski
Hi Guys, I've got a 4670K + Noctua NH-L12 (biggest/baddest cooler that would fit) in my bartop and it's running great. I just started playing with overclocks. I'm up to 4.4ghz using ASRock OC presets. I was able to run IntelBurnTestV2 for 10 cycles all the way up to 4.4ghz and it passed. My temps did reach 100 celcius during the test, but they are idling around 45-50. Is this too hot for idle? Any recommendations?
Trnzaddict
I'm not a super user but, I have a 4670k but it's watercooled running at 4.5 ghz with an ASUS rog mb, and the highest I peaked was 80, 100 seems kind of high imo...
newoski
Thanks for the reply. To clarify, 100 was during the Intel Stress Test. It doesn't come close to that during standard use, so far
jcrowley30
The normal high temp max should be 75. When you get to 105, I believe it shuts down.
iNTiGOD
The idle temps are a little high but the load temps are too high. You can cause permanent damage to your cpu. It's called electromigration. http://overclocking.guide/the-risks-of-overclocking/
zerojay
Jesus Christ. You might as well just take a sledge hammer to the board.
Trnzaddict
Thanks for the reply. To clarify, 100 was during the Intel Stress Test. It doesn't come close to that during standard use, so far I understand, my stress test was at 80, idling is very low 40s. You got a shit chip buddy unfortunately. Don't use Asus's OC Factory settings either, they always made me blue screen. I read up a shit load online and finally found settings that work good through manual tweaking. newoski
Jesus Christ. You might as well just take a sledge hammer to the board. zerojay, It was only for a few minutes of testing. Intel's documentation says 105 is the shutdown point...
zerojay
The shutdown point exists to make sure you don't cause direct damage to the CPU through sheer temperature. That doesn't mean that you aren't already damaging or limiting it's lifetime by pushing it to a little less than that point. If you don't care that your CPU may die in a month, keep running at 100. Personally, anything over 80 should be a large red flag that you've gone too far.
newoski
Thanks zerojay, Don't get me wrong, damage isn't my goal. Was a bit misguided I guess. It was only for a few minutes and I won't be doing it again -- per your stern guidance. ( :

newoski
Not trying to be stern, just don't want to see you end up in the silver smoke club. By stern, I just meant a necessary kick in the pants. With that said, I'm a bit confused. I've been using HWmonitor and Speedfan to monitor temps. I just noticed my core temps are the ones that hit 100c. My CPU / CPUTIN temp is staying below 60. Which one is the one I need to worry about?
