Metalzoic Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 I've decided to strip my cabinet to just arcade games and modern PC games (although I might need to add PSP so I can get Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins. Unless there's a PC version or something). So I've removed all the retro consoles from my wheel and deleted over a TB of console roms, iso's etc.. However exactly what emulators and/or systems do I need to have a complete arcade game setup? I have an Arcade Classics wheel (running MAME 163) I have a Vector Classics wheel (running AAE update 2) I have a Neo-Geo wheel (just points to MAME, isn't really necessary). Although how do I update this system/wheel to work with Hypersync now that it's renamed in Rocketlauncher? I have a Laserdisc wheel (with Daphne & Daphne-Singe in it) I know I need to set up Taito Type X. What else do I need? What doesn't run in MAME (or doesn't run well in MAME and better in something else)?
Kiro04 Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 -Capcom Play System I, II, III -Sega Model I and II -PopCap Games (If you want) -Taito Type X and X2... And, if you keep searching, you will find lots of more! I have 1 wheel for each manufacturer -Kaneko -Cave -Midway -Konami -Data East
Metalzoic Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 OK, but you guys didn't mention what is needed for those. ZFor example for Sega Model 2 & 3 I'm guessing they can't be emulated in MAME? So what emulator do I need and what rom set(s) do I need. I thought Capcom 1, 2 & 3 were in MAME? Does one of those need its own emulator and roms too? I didn't even know there was a Taito X2. Again, different emulator etc... Pop Cap has arcade games? (I actually just deleted my entire Pop Cap setup and all roms last night. I didn't think it had any arcade stuff in it.
Metalzoic Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Gotcha. By arcade I simply mean that it exists/existed in an actual arcade cabinet that takes quarters. Ok. Sounds like I need to figure out what Supermodel is and how to set it up. What about all the atomiswave arcade machines? I'm guessing it has it's own emulator, but are those roms in MAME or some completely different set? Damn. I wish I could find a list of every emulator needed foe arcade games and what type of roms are needed for them without wasting hours searching that info out. I thought it would be straightforward to answer. Thanks for the leads guys.
Dunk3000 Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 This might help you with the emulators needed for games mame doesn't support... http://nonmame.retrogames.com/ Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

Surprised it doesn't mention Atomiswave on it So I need: DICE for the old, old stuff Dolphin (triforce?) for 3 Nintendo arcade games I wasn't even aware of Taito Type X setup for newer arcade games SuperModel for Sega model 2 games (is this the Naomi setup?) Demul to run Atomiswave stuff @jeremy0203 what is "arcade pc, examu exboard"
Metalzoic Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 I have 1 wheel for each manufacturer -Kaneko -Cave -Midway -Konami -Data East I was considering this. Did you build each manufacturer xml by hand or did you use something like Dons Hypertools to do it? Also I'm guessing you would still b forced to use separate wheels for the different emulators? So you couldn't have a single wheel with Sega games running in MAME and also all the Sega games using Supermodel? Or can you (I know I have the Daphne & a couple Daphne-Singe games in the same wheel).
cowbells Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Damn. I wish I could find a list of every emulator needed foe arcade games and what type of roms are needed for them without wasting hours searching that info out. I thought it would be straightforward to answer. But wasting hours setting up games is what emulation is all about! Seriously though, the list you seek does exist in a fashion. Use Rocket Launcher and you can see all of the modules that are available for each system while you are setting it up. It's like a cheat list. Emulation can be hard to keep up with since it changes a lot. Also, many people use multiple emulators within one wheel so it's not as straightforward as you might think. For example, you can run MAME through Retroarch or you can just use MAME. Either way it gets the job done, but it's more of a matter of preference. Also, some people don't care to stay bleeding edge and still use older emulators. Anyway, I use: MAME for almost everything, then... Daphne / Singe for Laserdisc games DICE for Pong era stuff Sega Model 2 Emulator for Model 2 Super Model for Model 3 Demul for Atomiswave Dolphin Triforce for Triforce (Mario Kart GP) Taito Type X and X2 are Windows based arcade systems so I've heard you don't need an emulator though I wouldn't know. All the games I care about are on Steam The wormhole is deep my friend. There are still many other arcade systems out there. Crystal and Examu are a couple other examples I can think of off the top of my head. The 1970s still has hundreds of games that have yet to be dumped or emulated properly. For most things, you're not really missing much though and MAME will eventually just eat it all so really, it pays to wait it out. I'd focus more on what games you care about.
cowbells Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 I should also mention that I wouldn't recommend AAE. Those games look like crap compared to using HLSL in MAME. With that you can tweak the shaders to make them look much more authentic (once again, the wormhole is deep). Hope this helps!

I've already wasted enough hours setting stuff up. I imagine I have a ratio of about 10 hours setup to every 10 minutes actually played. And that might be generous. Thanks for the breakdown of your systems. I think I have a grasp on what to do now and that should give me the bulk of all arcade games (only)
Metalzoic Posted June 27, 2015 Author Posted June 27, 2015 I should also mention that I wouldn't recommend AAE. Those games look like crap compared to using HLSL in MAME. With that you can tweak the shaders to make them look much more authentic (once again, the wormhole is deep). Hope this helps! I'd have to disagree with you there. AAE running update 2 looks waaaaaaaaay better than MAME running vector games using the latest HLSL stuff. I spent hours testing the two and tried numerous "best vector settings" for MAME and it really was no contest.
cowbells Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 You are the first person I have seen that has recommended MAME over AAE. Are you sure you setup AAE properly because it looks awesome. Pretty sure: I have vector arcade games sitting in my house to compare both emulators against. AAE puts a glow on everything that isn't actually there in the real games. MAME with hlsl is almost identical. Asteroids is the one game that you can't make look right. Looks pretty off on both emus.
gigapig Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I agree with cowbells and also don't use AAE. I played an Asteroids cab recently and there was no glow, no beam flicker and there where certainly no points/dots at the end of every line. The only things that were striking were the phosphor trails and how bright the missiles were.
cowbells Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Look at this screenshot from Space Duel using AAE: image upload no size limit Look at the glow around your ship, around the enemies, etc. That doesn't exist in the real arcade. I know it looks cool. It looks how you might remember vector games, but it's not very accurate. The real game on a real vector monitor doesn't have that crazy glow. I promise.
gigapig Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Hmmm I dunno, might go with MAME that I just tried it with HLSL. I think I may like the brightness of the lines that MAME does over the glow AAE gives you, with HLSL off I didn't like looking at the "flicker" as it seemed to cause eye strain but with it on the flicker is gone. Just turn off Beam flicker. I whacked up the gamma and contrast to make it pop a bit more. vector.zip
gigapig Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Looks pretty much the same as it does when I enabled HLSL. Is there any reason to have that enabled for vector games? I think it only really adds bloom to vector games.

An Arcade Classics Wheel running MAME and most arcade games A SEGA Wheel running old sega, model 1, 2 & 3 games (if it's possible to mix all those emulators in a single wheel...) A Capcom Wheel (I'm guessing there's no way to mix Taito Type X games with MAME in a single wheel though? Cave Midway Tecmo etc... And then I suppose you'd also need an "Others wheel" for companies to small, weird or niche to deserve their own wheel. Or just leave them under the main Arcade Classics wheel? Sorry, just stream of consciousness spitballing here. Who else has there's this way and how, specifically, do you have it set up?

You'd probably want set that up completely separately as you will be mixing xml's and adding games to the Games.ini (found in RockerRocketLauncher\settings\system name) for whatever wheel your planning on adding games to.
Metalzoic Posted June 28, 2015 Author Posted June 28, 2015 Ha! Actually I want way less to fiddle with. That's why I already deleted 80 wheels, their emulators and all their roms off my cab. So I could limit it to just arcade stuff. But it would be very cool to just have wheels that break down the companies like this. If it really is that much of a pain in the ass I won't bother though.
Metalzoic Posted June 28, 2015 Author Posted June 28, 2015 That's what a lot of people have been doing for a while. All the major manufacturer stuff is in the download section. I didn't even think to check there. http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/files/category/28-arcade-systems/ Lame. Looks like there is very little theme-wise for the individual manufacturers. Probably won't bother then since I don't feel like making a ton of manufacturer themes myself on top of the work setting it all up. Oh well.
Metalzoic Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Just checked the "tutorials" section here and I didn't find any tutorials for setting up any of this stuff. Any one have any links to tutorials/guides for these arcade systems? Sega systems, Atomiswave, DICE etc...

Metalzoic Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 No different than 90%+ of other systems you setup. Actually from Gigas vid guide it looks like DEmul is a bit different. Also I just grabbed 26gigs worth of Demul .7 roms, but what the hell are these roms? Atomiswave games? Naomi games? Or did I just download a bunch of useless Dcast stuff? Sometimes it's obnoxious how hard it is just to find out basic info on the stuff.

Sometimes it's obnoxious how hard it is just to find out basic info on the stuff. There's no DC stuff in that PD romset as far as I can see What that PD set has is up to six separate systems worth of roms and they can all run off the latest Demul emulator with individual adjustments on a per system basis. 1. Sega Naomi 2. Sammy Atomiswave 3. PCB Sega Hikaru 4. Gaelco 5. Sega Aurora/SP 6. Cave 3rd (7. Demul can also play Dreamcast but those roms are not included in that PD set you downloaded.) The main two with the largest list of *mostly* playable games with the roms you downloaded are the first two. The databases for the first two are available on this website. If you want to go to the trouble of adding Hikaru, Gaelco and Aurora I have the DB for each if you need them. There are only a handful of games in each of these three and whilst they are playable to an extent some of them have sound/graphic issues.
