Spawk Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I am seeing a lot of people using RetroArch. That's cool, "whatever works for you" is common theme around these parts. But can someone actually explain to me why they use this? I mean, the emulators work already... RocketLauncher works already... Hyperspin works already... How is introducing yet another 3rd party software into the picture a good idea at all. Am I missing some amazing feature or something?
SIMPLYAUSTIN Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Think of retroarch as a emulator like MESS or MAME rather than a front end. It has a front end but it's actually the emulator side of it people use. It emulates many of the systems flawlessly. It fades in, fades out perfect. Has shaders and other stuff to play with too. Controls are all sorted and for systems such as Nintendo DS it brings more to the table than the actual dedicated emulators So with one install it plays almost half of your systems. So in theory... Only emulators you need is MAME, MESS, retroqrch and you have 95% of all the systems you could possibly use. Take a look at my reyroatch install vid. I talk about it more there. ninja2bceen Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Does it emulate things better though? Like I have all the systems set up etc would it be worth setting it all up Again?reset up all controls etc Tapatalk signature Looking for letter makers. Spawk Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 I am going to go ahead and assume no! They cannot possibly play better. They could not have written/made all those emulators... they wrap already made emulators in what they call cores. That being said, they may be able overlay some features not available on the regular emulator. Still not something I would ever use. It is brand new and cores seem to get updated regularily but will they still be in 2-3 years????? It is definitely dependant on that. 3rd party for no benefit from what I see. dark13 Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Retroarch does NOT emulate things better (fusion for example is better than picodrive/gens and ootake is better than mednafen), it's a bit easier to set up compared to other emulators BUT what really shine are the shaders. Mame now has GLSL that are really ok, but for many other emulators retroarch has better image filters. Just check out gameboy filter on RA... Automatizing infopanels creation from .csv files for HTPCs themes (look at infopanel tutorial.zip on the ftp in dark13 folder) PNGs to SWFs automatized flash scripts Hyperspin Wheelset automatized template (photoshop's variables + batch) Aeon nox 4.13 W.I.P. hyperspin skin
SIMPLYAUSTIN Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 To say it emulates better is not the question, it does many systems and yes Some in my opinion if you had to call it better. But that is not how it works. I don't really have the time to talk about it here, it's a long and boring conversation. 95% of the cores are more developed than the emulators. They can use all the plugins. Controls configured. Graphics configured. Etc etc etc If you delve even deeper you will also find some systems games can only actually be played on retroarch. But alas, I got to go enjoy my weekend, football seasons started! Like most things around here you got to make your own mind up, just give it a try. Lots of stick in the muds. You gits to make your own mind mate. Happy weekend!! Simply Austin's YouTube
dark13 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Austin... consider SSF vs yabause. Saturn is basically unplayable on RA. And it's not a good thing considering SSF DOES NOT have decent filters... SIMPLYAUSTIN Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 True but it emulates more than two systems. Like I said also, lets let people try Simply Austin's YouTube
thcdgaf Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 if retroarch played 7z or im not understanding how also be nice if ssf does also
Runadumb Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 I tried retroarch again over the weekend with Austin's guide (huge thanks for that by the way, started a new hyperspin from scratch and its running great) but I still don't like it. The menu system is a mess, the way it handles configs files is a mess and I just find it a pain in the ass. I'd rather setup a dozen separate emulators than deal with retroarch. Even Austin's preconfigured version didn't work. Most of the systems ran in the corner of the screen. One day it may be my goto emulator but its got a long way to go useability wise for me.
Turranius Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 I'm in the same place as Runadumb. Been trying for 2 days to get RetroArch 1.2.2 to use my keyboard as input device but as soon as I remap a key, the keys in the menu stop working and the new key does not work in a game either. Putting RetroArch on a shelf right now. Most of the games can be played in MESS which is a ton of a lot easier to setup IMO. Mame related stuff: FTP: grandis.nu, port 21, user:misc, pass:misc http://grandis.nu/software Tur-Matcher - Match your roms/media/XML files. Another Idle Volume Adjuster - Automatically control the volume. How to: Use MAME Extras as material for HyperPause How to: Use eXoDOS 2.0 as material for HyperPause

Had that same issue, seems to be a bug with 1.2.2, I downloaded a new nightly and that worked better. Though by this stage I was so burnt out on retroarch and was still having video display issues I dropped it shortly after.
Turranius Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Tested today daily build but its the same problem. Remap "User 1 Down D-Pad" and down no longer works in the menus. Well for accuracy, compatibility, proper timing and sound, Genesis Plus GX is significantly better than Fusion. I can't comment on ootake vs mednafen personally but everything I've read states it's more accurate and compatible.
