Well I went to start up my computer just for retro gaming and boom.  I get a hardware error detected by windows, can't repair it and won't start up.  I guess when I get some significant free time I will get into opening it up and seeing what is wrong.  So until that time I am on a break, nothing worse than a random hardware error which it can't pinpoint.  I'm tempted to throw the whole thing out and start over since it only cost $400 total.

Keep the hard drives. You may be able to get your data.

Should be an easy fix.

If you are in your late 30s or over, it should be second nature to you. If you are younger you can take it back to the Apple store.

Early 30s, but I built the computer so I'm sure I can get it running again.  I guess it is my own fault for going with a cheap motherboard.

It's always frustrating. Best thing take a day or two off, get a six pack or whatever floats your boat, and then just troubleshoot it one component at a time. That happened to me, cheap mobo, but I RMA'ed it and (knock on wood) the replacement one has been running fine.

I highly recommend that you DON'T get a Seagate Backup Drive Plus.

God I hate this thing. Slow as hell, shitty UI, no positive feedback that it's even working, lame as hell layered backup system.

Did I mention it's slow as ****? If I knew where Mr. Seagate lived I'd drive over there and shove it up his ass then light his house on fire.

That's how bad it sucks.

and you DEFINITELY don't want a 3TB Seagate drive. The failure rate is near 50% on those pieces of chit.

Much like Seagulls are garbage birds, Seagates are garbage drives... which is where I think they get the name. Everyone of them I've ever owned has failed on me.

Western Digital has never steered me wrong however.

Day one with the WD My Book 3 TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive went well.  I went with the 3 TB since it was only 8 dollars more on Amazon.  I had it set up and installed software in under 5 minutes.  The backup took a while, not sure how long since I left the room and came back but it was very easy with the software.  I would recommend to others, but it all comes down to one thing - Will it last and will it give me any signs that it is starting to go so I can transfer to another backup.  Time will tell.

Did it give you any feedback that it was progressing on the backup while it was happening? Progress bar, percentages that actually move etc...? How much did you backup and how long did it actually take in hours roughly?

The Seagate backup works like this: Start the backup, the percentage counts to 8% then seems to freeze. There is absolutely zero indication that it is doing anything (other than a light on the drive itself that flickers occasionally) and the first few times you will restart it over and over thinking it's broken (shit tons of posts from other buyers experiencing the same thing). About 20+ hours later it will jump from 8% to 90 something and slowly counted up to 100% over the next few hours. That was for about 1.5Tb.

Each following backup layers the changes on top of the original and files them by date. I have no idea how you would actually do a restore using this system as the instructions aren't very clear.

Alright so day 2.  I will give a more detailed review:

Install: Took around 3 minutes to install 3 programs WD Drive Utilities (Check status of drive and run tests, set sleep timer), WD security (set passwords) and WD SmartWare (set backups).  Right away my only problem here was is it necessary to have 3 separate apps/programs?  Anyway, setting your backup is pretty easy with the WD SmartWare.

Backup:The backup has a status bar and it does move, right now mine is at 0 MB of 671GB as seen at 8:59pm, at 9:09pm it was at 20GB so about 2GB a minute.  That would put it at a pace of 12.5 hours for 1.5 TB.  I would like to stick around and keep an eye on the meter but my 7 month old just won't allow.  11PM Update: 395GB of 671GB so much faster, around 3.2 GB per minute.

The WD SmartWare has a restore tab that seems pretty straight forward.

Cons: short usb and power cord leaves you around 2-3 feet between where the backup and your CPU will be.

That's about it, I am happy with it so far.  Let me know if you have any other questions.
