Sega Saturn - Let's Make Every Game Work!

Hey guys, I thought I'd start a new thread for this so I can keep the important information on the first post. I'm trying to get every Saturn game working with minimal emulator setups. My hope is this will eventually make setting this system up quite a bit easier.

First, I'd like to get every game playing correctly, then I figure this could be turned into a guide. I can only work on this on certain nights, so don't expect miracles, but if other people chip in it'll go much faster. Also, I hit a major snag where now my Daemon Tools is acting really funny. I'm pretty convinced this is due too much mounting and unmounting too fast trying to get games launching. Or you know it's something else. Not sure yet.

Now, when I say every game, what I actually mean is every game that has wheel art. I'm not really sure if that's every game, but it sure looks like it.

Ok, I found that SSF v0.12 Beta R3 was more compatible than R4 when I started, so I've been using that as my main version. I have the following games launching and playing:

One note: Rocket Launcher returns an error if you have games with mp3 or wav files in your folder that are named the same as your cue file. In these instances, you want your iso image to have the correct name as the database. Also, in a few cases, I found that a game wouldn't work from one collection, but would work fine from another. I'd only address it when I run into it if I were you, but perhaps down the road we can track this. Every image I've used so far has come from Pleasuredome btw.

In some cases, Rocket Launcher wasn't always handling region switching properly for me, so we can coax that along by making the default region the correct one, so if I write (J) or (E) next to the emu version, that means you should have those regions enabled by default. Don't forget to change your Bios as well! To play it safe, I started by just doing this for every region 'cause it seems to help and really just makes my life easier.

I didn't get very far into the exceptions list, but here's what I have so far:

v0.12 Beta R3 (J)
Advanced V.G. (Japan)
Akumajou Dracula X - Gekka no Yasoukyoku (Japan)

v0.12 Beta R1 (SH2 Cache Enabled)
Area 51 (USA)

v0.11 Alpha R2 (Europe region enabled)
3D Lemmings (Europe)

v0.09 Beta (J)
DoDonPachi (Japan)

Keep in mind, this was after attempting to launch and play at least a decent portion of every single game. I've also found that many times you can find someone saying XYZ game works with XYZ version, but in reality, you can't get to the gameplay, just the menu. If you help me on this, please make sure you can actually play the game and it's playing correctly! If you are unsure as to what the gameplay should look like, just watch your EmuMovie preview.

These games all worked fine in my default setup, but I found them to be overly heavy with Japanese text. You may not agree or maybe you can read Japanese:

Black Matrix (Japan)
Code R (Japan)
Densha De Go! EX (Japan)
Gekitotsu Koushien (Japan)
Princess Crown (Japan)
Sega Ages - Phantasy Star Collection (Japan)
Sega Ages - Rouka Ni Ichidant-R (Japan)

These games I still need to try other dumps / rips out or I just didn't have yet, so it's very possible that they work just fine in the default setup. Basically, this was my need to nab list that I still need to go through:

I think you need a real Saturn Bios to improve compatibility, I know Street Fighter Zero 3 only works with a Saturn Japanese Bios

Posted

When I set up my 41 System build which included Saturn, my main goal was to at least have Astal working. One odd quirk was it would only load if the Saturn Bios screen showed before the game, having it off just gave me a black screen. :dontknow:

DOOM didn't work for me both in SSF or Yabause, it does start but never enter in gameplay, curiously seems that the Japanese version is the best among USA/EUR because that was released only after some improvements, though, unfortunately they didn't make a great work porting DOOM to Saturn, even the console having enough power to run that game.

Look this text excerpt. from Segaretro

There were a number of differences between versions released the North American, European and Japanese versions of the game. The American release does not feature multiplayer of any sort, despite being advertised on the box, and has the worst system performance. The Japanese release came out at a slightly later date and features improved performance. The European and Japanese releases of the game features multiplayer using the Taisen Cable accessory, which also requires two copies of the game played through two consoles. Multiplayer allows two players to play the game in cooperative or deathmatch modes on all the levels. (The boss levels however do not have level exits, where the only way to end an unlimited match is to quit the game.

I also could't play Virtua Cop 1 or 2, did you really entered in gameplay? I don't doubt it but I remember these weren't playable in R3 version.

Another curious case about the differences among regions, seems like Shinobi Legions in USA or Shinobi X in Europe has some significant differences too, look the text extracted from Wikipedia.

The European version of Shinobi Legions, published by Sega Europe and released as Shinobi X (a revert to the game's original title from when it was first announced at the Tokyo Toy Show in June 1994, was delayed and released in late 1995. It was delayed because Sega Europe's producer David Nulty disliked the original music score and wanted to change it for the European release, in a similar way that Sega of America did years before with the North American release of Sonic CD.
The whole in-game tracks were replaced by noted British video game composer Richard Jacques, while the cutscene music tracks were left intact. Jacques composed the soundtrack in imitation of the style of Yuzo Koshiro's The Revenge of Shinobi.[4] The North American version, published earlier the same year by Vic Tokai, had retained the same music as the Japanese version.

When I had a Saturn, I also noticed that Crimewave, another exclusive Saturn title had a bug in the European version and it had some freezes making a poor experience playing that, and the Japan/USA version was smooth.

for me A+M+O+K works with bizhawk what are the benefits of using ssf?

Probably none. This is the kind of input I'm looking for thank you!

Edit: Ok, just double checked. Bizhawk is for sure using a Yabuse core, so I'll try it in that emulator instead. This is great info though. Last time I picked this up, I was stuck on that game with SSF.

I also could't play Virtua Cop 1 or 2, did you really entered in gameplay? I don't doubt it but I remember these weren't playable in R3 version.

Yes, to my knowledge Doom is a game that is currently unable to be emulated.

Yes, I'm positive about Virtua Cop 1 & 2. I have the dedicated arcade for 2, these are favorites of mine. One thing that really helps is to enable highest compatibility. It's in the far right tab in the options. At work right now so I can't look at it what's it's called atm.

Thanks for the info about different region games! This is exactly the stuff I'm looking for guys! If you want to do me a huge favor, pick a few games on the list and let me know what you did to get them working! I figure at the end, I can dropbox all of my emu setups so hopefully it helps everyone else out there.

Gigs, yes i've had loads of trouble with Astal. I can play perfectly outside of Rocket Launcher using R4 and enabled SH2 cache. For some reason that option gets overriden when launched from RL. Can't figure that one out yet! Here's a work around for the time being:

Load the game outside of RL with SH2 enabled. Save your state once you start the first level. Now you can launch from RL and load your state. I had that working for a minute. It's a workaround so it didn't make my list yet.

Edit: just reread your post. So do you have it working now? I still haven't used your settings ini that you gave me. It's next after AMOK on my list.

I think you need a real Saturn Bios to improve compatibility, I know Street Fighter Zero 3 only works with a Saturn Japanese Bios

Yes, I'm aware. Read my post again. I haven't gotten to that title yet. Thank you for the info though!
