Avar Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 This tutorial covers how to deal with slightly more complex backgrounds and screenwide artwork. Download link for the 16:9 Atari Classics themes is in the description along with my conversion notes, wherever a theme needed more than basic attention. Again, I try to keep it extremely concise and I avoid revisiting the minutia that I've covered in previous conversion tutorials, so if anything is unclear just leave me a comment in the video and I'll get back to you asap or elaborate in another video.
BakerMan Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 Fuckin great. You're turning into a pro. Beautiful. Good point about getting acclimated with photoshop and flash pro. Very useful tools for anyone that wants to develop artwork. Can't wait to see how you evolve. COME ON PEOPLE! There will always be room for converted themes. SO CATCH ON! Avar is doing great. Fuckin brilliant, actually. Love to see you utilizing the flash scripts. Were those new to you? And if so, have you noticed the difference between regular png's and the smoothed swf's? Dark13 is an awesome mofo. But anyways, you are to. Intelligent as shit. And "shit" is pretty intelligent. But like I said Avar, I can't wait to see you evolve. Brothers 4 Life my friend. P.S. - Sorry to pander to you like some weirdo groupie, but it's minds like yours that help communities like this evolve. Lovin' it. Show your support for the Most Badass Project of them all! Avar Posted December 24, 2015 Author Posted December 24, 2015 Thx mang. I'd manually converted a few smaller sets before learning about dark13's scripts but it didn't cost me much time to do it that way and correct it after with NO_SCALE_SMOOTH. There's definitely a very very very big difference between a standard .PNG and a smoothed .SWF on a widescreen display. It's night and day. It's so noticeable that after using converted themes I can't go back to standard, which is part of why I'm so painstakingly converting everything. Makes things actually LOOK 1080p, instead of just 480p blown up to fit a 1080p display. Another quick note on the 16:9 converted themes in this and other sets I've released. They're not just resizes, I've also carefully fixed them where they needed love (eg. fixing outlines on characters, cleaning up pxels, replacing rough backwards with updated 1080p ones when needed, and a number of other quality control improvements) so unless someone's on a 4:3 display, these will difinitively be the best choice for now as far as aesthetics go. That being said, I encourage people to let me know here or in the vid comment sections if they find even the slightest problems that aren't covered in "Conversion Notes.txt" so I can fix them.
KlopjerO Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I see what you mean.. that looks great it's quite addictive!! do you have a jsfl, that goes through the motions but exports as PNG ? for wheel purposes ? | My themes / downloads | Get the MS-DOS Wheel sound pack | Get your MS-DOS game themes here | Get the MS-DOS wheel set here | My YouTube channel | WarcrafT - Lord of the clans |ZeroJay's Ultimate DooM archive
Avar Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 From what I can tell, unfortunately, there is no benefit or visible improvement to a smoothened PNG. Fortunately, this only affects wheels, genre backgrounds, video borders, and frontend art (eg. exit prompt). You can sharpen the wheel appearance by underscaling it via HyperHQ in the "Wheel" menu of each system under "Wheel Image Sizes." As long as those values are less than 300px (16:9 wheel art width, provided yours are converted for widescreen) it makes a visible improvement. I set mine as Large = 285, Small = 200.
KlopjerO Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Thanks Avar, Sorry for the vague request. I wanted to use the script to convert the wheels to a 16:9 ratio. Avar Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Can definitely batch resize PNGs via Photoshop or Flash but since there's no visible improvement I just use Fotosizer myself. With raw wheel images I typically go 4:3 Image -> AutoKustom a background/border -> Resize the AutoKustomed Wheels- > Downsample slightly in HS to improve appearance.

Recently I came about a free tool which lets you decompile SWF files into FLA's https://www.free-decompiler.com/flash/?utm_source=app&utm_medium=about&utm_campaign=app Originally enough it's called Flash decompiler, and even more surprisingly it's free.. applying the awesome new insights that you have provided me with, AVAR, with this tool anyone is able to resize the Flash animations created by all the awesome people here on Hyperspin. 1.Basically once you opened the FLA in flash, you click on the Edit multiple Frames button 2.Once you've clicked on this option, a frame selection bar appears, the times that I have used this it selects the first 5 frames by default, by Placing your cursos over the right edge of the selection screen you can drag it the righ to select the frames you want to edit simultaneously. 3.After you selected the all frames you want to edit, you click on edit and click Select all. what you have done is selected all of the symbols/bitmaps that are on the canvas, 4.now you can modify and transform this selection to 75% of it's normal width and hey presto, with a bit of AVAR know-how you have a squished flash animation which you only have to publish as swf to have it look sweet on widescreen monitors. This is nothing new I suppose, but I thought I'd report back and say thank you once again ( the animation in the screenshot was provided, graciously by Jsin a while back, I'm still strugling with the theme but it's getting close now) | My themes / downloads | Get the MS-DOS Wheel sound pack | Get your MS-DOS game themes here | Get the MS-DOS wheel set here | My YouTube channel | WarcrafT - Lord of the clans |ZeroJay's Ultimate DooM archive
damageinc86 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Hopefully someone can at least run through some of the most popular main menu themes and do the flash thing. Would be awesome to have those just done and out of the way.
Avar Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 Most of the most popular systems already have really nice 16:9 conversions but anything that doesn't I'm converting as I go.

I use SWF Decompliler but that's how I do it. I'll be doing a tut on it in the near future. That being said, the complexity of is content dependent. Some FLAs take no effort while others take some problem solving or a fairly beefy PC (or a lot of patience). Others, you can only resize certain elements without replacing screen-wide artwork. I'll likely do a few vids covering the basics and then giving a few more complex examples. I find it's a lot of fun, like solving a different puzzle every time and some take a bit of creativity.
