nicco84
hi to everyone. i hope to post in correct section. i'm building a cab and now i need the hardware to put in. i use mame but also supermodel and demul and i know that with demul you need better hardware than mame. so this is my configuration, please give me some hints main board MSI 970A-G46 Socket AM3+ DDR3 SATA3 USB3 ATX 83,00 CPU AMD FX-6300 6-Core Vishera 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 14MB 95W Boxed 107,00 Corsair Memoria Pc Vengeance Performance 4 Gb Ddr3-1600 - Pc3-12800 - Cl9 (Cmz4Gx3M1A1600C9) 37,00 Sapphire HD7750 VGA (PCI-e, 1GB GDDR5, HDMI, DVI-I, DisplayPort attivo) 65,00 Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3 Hard Disk Internal 3.5" 500GB - 7200rpm - Cache 16MB 56,00 power supply PC Thermaltake Berlin 630W 80+ ATX 56,00 Samsung SH-222BB DVD-RW, versione Bulk 26,00 please say to me if i could spent little more with better config or maybe less. thank you
somail
That AMD CPU is a beast, but if you care about playing high end Mame games (i.e. NFL Blitz) I highly suggest at least an Intel based cpu. Don't really need a DVD drive except to install windows. Can you use an existing one? Use 64bit Win 7 unless you are playing with an old arcade monitor/TV. Polemicist
Core 2 duo and 775 pin is a bit of a drop. Look at the price compared to what you had which was a 6 core little beast. Intel hardware is always more expensive for the "equivalent" amd hardware. Depends on your budget how far you go up that chain.
dark13
AMD does have a "problem"... an amd's fx8350 (210 euro) is almost on par with an intel's 4770k (320 euro) BUT FX8350 does have 8core while 4770k is a 4core. Emulators usually can run only on 2cores so, like an old advertise said "do the maths" AMD's APUs (a4, a6, a10, etc) does make (a lot of) sense with a cheap build IF you are not going to use a pci-e videocard An e8400 will not run supermodel (scud race) and many dolphin games at 100% speed. Moreover 775 is a dead socket... also 1155 is a dead socket BUT a 2500k based system still rocks If you really want to run 3d mame games and dolphin games you really should look after an overclocked (>4ghz) 2500k-3570k-4670k. Ah... even demul and pcsx2 need a really beefy cpu. Supermodel (scud race) does not run 100% on my @3.2ghz q6600. ... and talking about "dos games" my rig can't push a decent framerate on gp2 at highest setting under dosbox -.- This game is still a nightmare (it ran at 9fps on the best system avaible back in the days)

I spent a quite a lot of time perfecting/tweaking Demul operation on my cab. Demul seems to rely on a powerful video card rather than CPU power, based on the latest builds. I run an i5 2400 CPU on my arcade machine and when running Demul Naomi / Atomiswave my usage is between 10-15 percent, yet I get a lot of sound skips/jumpy frame rates. If I bump my crappy ATI 6570's stock core clock of 675 MHZ to say around 900, games run with minimal problems. The newest Demul has added many new gpu emulation improvements so honestly just don't skimp on the video card.
dark13
I agree, demul seems to be the most gpu-bound emulator on thep lanet (even at low resolution). I noticed it upgrading my gtx9800 to gtx660 but I thought it was a dx11 related thing...

Gigabyte GeForce GT630 Graphics Card (2GB DDR3, PCI-E) 75,00 euro?
dark13
No, Trnzaddict was saying that overclocking his videocard bump up demul's speed. So performance should be gpu-dependant. I tought it was dx11 related as gtx9800 does not support dx11 but the matters seems to be "raw power" related. Well, prices are a bit country-dependant, here in italy a 650ti 1gb costs 118 euro. A 650 is priced 100 euro but TI is 40% faster so these 20 euro are well spent Ati DOES have a better price/performance ratio BUT usually emulators prefer nvidia over ati. Anyway a 7770 here costs 105 euro. 1gb should be good enough, only few windows games uses (slightly) more than 1gb vram (for example bioshock infinite)
Scylla
If you don't mind this to be my very first post, at most European (I'm Spanish) online retailers you can buy a GeForce GTX 650 for slightly less than 100 euro. GT6x0 model cards inferior to the 650 are horrible refittings of earlier NVIDIA GPUs and, in my opinion, can't hold their own on DX11 performance with a "true" Kepler GPU. melocwb
Hi, I do wish to build a PC for HS, but don`t want to spend a lot of cash, so I so this MB already with a Processor, and i was wondering if it would be able to run HS? It`s a Asus J800I with a Celeron® Dual-Core J1800 SoC onboard. does it do the job?
dark13
What do you want to run? The passmark score is similar to the e2180 I'm using in my HTPC and this mean no demul, no CEMU, no dolphin, no pcsx2. Even mame's system 11/12 (tekken, soul calibur, street fighter ex) will not run, they will run on epsx (playstation1 version). The biggest problem will be the integrated graphic cards, I don't think it will support CRT shaders emulation even if new mame's BGFX are not that demanding. It might have problem playing HS videos, some intel GPUs are not compatible. I know, hardware prices in Brazil are crazy -.-
melocwb
Yes, hardware over here can be very expensive due the exchange rate we have now. But my main concerns, besides price, is space. As a mini ITX, it could save some space and build a console size machine. What about this Nuc Intel computers? Could they handle the emulation of these latest demul, etc?! Which of those would you recommend?
dark13
Have to check performance but the IGP is always an intel product. ITX form factor is relatively small and you can use high-end hardware with m.2 ssd hard disk and a good videocard https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z370I-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-AC.html If you are into overclock and have you space for a decent heatsink i3 8350k is a good choice, it can safely runs at 4.5ghz as it usually can reach 5ghz. A good start point can be a case like this one http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mini-itx/elite130/ . The good thing is it supports an ATX PSU. With an upper mid-end rig you need at last 400 REAL WATT, that means a decent >550W PSU. If you are planning overclock and an high-end videocard the thing can be much more complicated. Probably a custom build case would offer better solutions. There are L shaped pci-e adaptor that could help organizing space... results seems to vary, some people don't have problems, some people have lots of problems. If looks is more important than real performance you should be able to find a decent "steam machine". The project has been an uber failure but some decent rig was rolled out.
