Help needed with wheels in Photoshop!

Recommended Posts

For some reason I'm having a problem when placing wheels into Photoshop!

I just downloaded the "Sega Master System Official HQ wheel pack 1.2" and wanted to convert the wheels to 16:9 for my setup.

If you double click a wheel to view it in "windows photo viewer"....it looks fine. But when I drag and drop a wheel into Photoshop it changes the wheel so it has jagged edges?! (Please see photo)

Never had this problem before so a bit puzzled!

Does anyone have any idea whats going on?

I've noticed transparent png's can act weird when putting them into photoshop. For example copy/pasting them in messes them up, so maybe dragging/dropping them does too.

To get them to import into PS perfectly I need to save the file and then open it directly in PS. Give that a shot.

Thanks for the advice but doesn't work for me!

I'm no PS expert (the only thing I use it for is making dumb pictures to make fun of friends and stuff), but I just loaded that same wheel in PS and it looked fine, no jagged edges. Is it possible that you have some sort of settings or profile on that would cause it to load differently?

Maybe, although I've never had this problem before with any other wheel set I've downloaded.

Could it be that something went wrong during the download?! Gonna re-download them and see if the problem still exists.

Same here...no problem, do you use openGL with photoshop? maybe you need to update your GPU drivers?

Whait a minute...why are there three stages in the history panel?

- Open

- RGB Color

- 16bit Bits/Channel

Have you done that or PS by itself? There should only be the - Open stage when you open something and the files are already RGB, and why would you need it to be 16 bit?

When I drop the file into Photoshop, the layer is locked so I cannot use "Free Transform" to make it fit 16:9. By changing it from "Indexed Color" to "RGB color" it unlocks the layer for me. The "16Bits/channel" was me clicking around, in frustration, to see if it made a difference to the image

"do you use openGL with photoshop?" - I would have to say no as I don't know what openGL is!

I have no clue when it come to Photoshop settings! I normally just open Photoshop and it just..kinda..works!

Ok, well to start with, does the image look as jagged when you import it or is it jagged only after you "unlock" it? You know you can unlock a layer by just clicking the lock symbol on the layer panel right ;) If it doesn't work then you might have to double click the layer.

What PS version are you using btw?

OpenGL means that PS can use your graphics card (if it is compatible) to work faster and make cleaner screen results. You can easily check this by going to Edit/Preferences/Performance and check if the Use Graphics Processor is enabled. If it is, then try disabling it or updating your graphics card drivers, what GPU are you using?

I have honestly never seen that happen before. Maybe a reinstall would be in order?

The image is jagged when I first open it. It doesn't matter if I "drag and drop", use "File>open", or if I right click the wheel and select "open with".

I know, but for some reason that doesn't work on these files?! Neither does double clicking and if I right click on the layer, all my options are grayed out?!

CS5 Extended Version 12.0

I can't see "Use Graphics Processor" any where but there is the option "Enable openGL Drawing" which is checked. Turning this option off makes no difference.

My GPU is an "nvidia geforce 9300m gs".

I'm not feeling a reinstall as this is only a problem with these wheels. It doesn't happen with any other files!

Ok, the locked thing happens sometimes to me as well, what I usually do in that case is either duplicate the layer, and if that doesn't help then I copy the whole canvas to a new file.

All these wheels are created on newer CS than CS5, I don't know but it might be some compatibility issues???

I think you have to restart PS to notice any OpenGL settings changes, try and see if that helps.

I'll try and save a couple of files and post here for you to test something. Just a moment.

wow..ok, that's weird...wait a minute. I remember Sub-Z adding some kind of PNG compression to get the files smaller...that might actually be the problem. I'll try to make a new zip file with the whole set from HyperVault so you can check if they all work as intended.

Cheers yall...i see you guys are all over this.  Dammit Sub Z and his png compression :P

Great stuff...good to have that cleared up. Weird though that it didn't get jagged with others...but I guess it might be that newer PS versions has support for the compression.

Anyway, I say that we skip the PNG compression completely from now on, it saves a very small amount of HD space and seems to give other problems in the end.

I'll put this new zip file in the download section as well.

Pack in download section updated...note, you don't need to download it again if the ones you have work ;)

Oh, and let me know if anyone of you have the same problem with other systems...or try to update your Photoshop version ;)

Never had this issue with any version of PS.....

(Went from CS4 > CS5 > CS6 > CC 2015, though been on CS6 from release up till maybe a few months ago)

I do thinker with the performance settings etc whenever I freshly install PS to make better use of my pc performance and have the best render quality (which I still have to do on AI CC, looks like garbage now at certain zoom levels), but I can't imagine how this problem can & would occur at all anyway except for maybe what JayC suggested above.
