gigapig Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Good choice One of my favourites but I still suck at it.
boohiss Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 For those curious, here's how to record an INP file and then create an avi from it that you can upload to youtube. It should work on any version of MAME, gui or not. Keep in mind you need the same exact version of MAME to create and play back INP files, or they may not work. If you created one using MAME .145, and tried to play it back in MAMEplus .152, it won't work. Creating the INP file 1) If you are using a gui version of MAME, right click on the game in the list and select "play and record input". You might have to find it under the file menu on top if it is not available after right clicking on the game. Command line mame needs the -record parameter to work. An example for this competition of burger time (rom name btimem) would be: "mame.exe btimem -record btimem.inp", and yes you can use this in a command prompt for gui versions of mame also. Just replace mame.exe with your executable name. 2) Name the file whatever you would like and click save, preferably in your inp folder in your MAME folder. Create one if needed. The game will now boot up and it will be recording your inputs until you exit the game. Notes: It's recommended to exit after each game attempt. Don't play 4 credits in a row or you will have to do more video editing later (If that's okay to you then go right ahead. Just keep in mind the file will be much bigger if you do this). Also, remember that if you name your file the same as last time it WILL overwrite the old file. When you get a good score you might want to move that inp file for safe keeping . 3) As soon as you exit the game, your inp file should be created. To test it out, select "playback input" under the file menu with the game selected in the gui. It will play the game all the way just like you did, hopefully. Do not press any keys during this, just let it run. If you exit or press something it won't alter your inp file though, so don't worry about that. Under command line mame, the command for this competition would be "mame.exe btimem -playback btimem.inp". Notes: There are games out there that INP recording just won't work for, so it's recommended you do a test run first and make sure everything is working fine. Some games might require you to delete any highscore, nvram, and cfg files for the game to ensure it records correctly. For this competition, Burger Time (Midway) seems to work fine without deleting these files. Turning the INP file into an AVI 1) You will need to run a command prompt for this to work, unless your gui allows both playback and aviwrite commands at the same time (MAMEplus does not allows this). Open a command prompt and change directories to your MAME folder. An example would be "cd C:\HyperSpin\Emulators\mame". With the directory in the correct place you are ready to tell it to both play back your inp file and record an avi. 2) For this competition for the rom btimem, type "mame.exe btimem -playback btimem.inp -aviwrite btimem.avi". The "mame.exe" part you can change to whatever your mame executable is named (i.e. mameplus.exe, etc.). The first btimem in the command is the rom name, so replace with any new game rom names as necessary. The INP and AVI files you can name whatever you like. Do not press anything while the game plays, let it run until it's done and then exit out of MAME. Notes: This will create a large, uncompressed avi file in your snap directory in your MAME folder. For example, my gradius video was 5:25 minutes long and produced a 3gb file. Keep this in mind if you are short hard drive space. Also, since it is playing the game again using your inputs, it is going to register another of the exact same score. So if you want your exact high scores saved without these "duplicates", you might want to play the INP file back using another install of the same MAME version. If the game doesn't save your high score at all, then you have nothing to worry about. Compressing the AVI File 1) Obtain one of many video conversion programs. I am using "AVS Video Converter 8.4", which is a "registered" version that you can find rather easily. If you use the unregistered version there will be a watermark on your video for a bit. 2) Run your conversion program, changing settings to your preference. Using the above program, I turned a 3gb file into a 166mb HD 1080p video file. Obviously the lower the quality, the smaller the file will be. 3) Upload it to youtube! Pretty self explanatory here. Make sure you're signed in, click the upload button, and follow the basic directions on screen. Recording INP from within HyperSpin For this, I have found only one reliable way. I created a thread here: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?36265-Integrating-INP-file-recording-for-MAME&p=335953#post335953 in hopes that somebody might figure out a better solution. 1) Open up HyperLaunchHQ. Go to GLOBAL in the column on the left, then select emulators on top. 2) Select MAME from the emulator list, and click the "Edit Global Module Settings" button above the list. 3) Select "Rom Settings" tab and click the + button. Type in your rom name (in this case btimem) and double click on it in the list. 4) Under "params" type this: "-record btimem.inp". Now HyperSpin will record INP input when you play that rom. Notes: This has its faults but it is the best option I can figure out. Please see the thread I posted if you can help create a better solution. Using this method, it will always name the INP file the same thing, so when you get your high score you NEED to exit HyperSpin and move the INP file somewhere to keep it safe before you start another play of that game. Also, there is no way that I can figure out to simulate the script mentioned in the thread I posted. The script moves cfg, nvram, and highscore files for a game before recording input, in case they interfere with recording. Then it moves them back after you are done. There you have it! Hope that helps some people out there. It's much easier than it seems to do, and beats other recording methods due to no lag from recording video on the fly. Enjoy

xtwistedsanityx Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Stuck in a hotel with only my mobile phone, so not an official entry as no screen shot, but only got 5900 with mame4droid and rom. I hate the touchscreen controls I kept losing my place on the joystick. Hopefully next time I'll be able to enter properly, please keep doing them. HyperGrade 97%
