Redundant "Systems"

I am not knowledgeable enough to know which systems are redundant. For example, is there a need for Sega ST-V or are those games playable in MAME? etc...

If anybody has any knowledge they would like to share on which systems/setups are redundant, please feel free. I would appreciate it. Perhaps it would help others...

thanks

Then that would also cover

  • Atomiswave
  • AAE
  • Neo Geo
  • Capcom
  • Sega Model 2
  • Zinc

And some other arcade systems. Some are best run by MAME, others like AAE work 'better'/have better visuals on their own respective emulator.

Wait, Amotiswave and Sega Model 2 work in Mame? Are you sure?

Like I said, not to sure as I haven't looked into it in ages

Also, with AAE, how do you get the nice glowing graphics in Mame?

You don't, that's why it's a mame system, but you want to run it in a different emulator

I've been having a good look at this and it seems that if you are using a split set then the names will match. This is certainly true of:

SNK Neo-Geo

Sega Model 2

Sega Model 3

It's possibly true of Sega Naomi, too. I don't have that set up to check though. It is certainly not true of Daphne.

The SNK Neo-Geo games work well in MAME anyway, so that's not a problem. The issue I see is that neither "Sega Model 2 Emulator" or "Supermodel" support 7z, which is how most MAME sets are distributed nowadays. I see a few options to get around this.

Convert your MAME romset to ZIP -> not practical for updating, and will take up extra space.

Convert only the roms used in those systems to ZIP -> still not practical although better than converting all of them.

Have 7z and ZIP duplicates of those games -> probably the 'cleanest' option, but wastes space.

Have an AHK to decompress the 7z and re-compress it to ZIP before launch -> I don't know enough about AHK to know if this is practical, but seems like it could work.

Wait for the emulators to support 7z -> looking at the current status of development of those emulators, not likely to happen any time soon.

Any thoughts? It's be great if we could somehow figure a solution for all of the Arcade emulators to share one rom set.

Just that if you are mixing and matching archive types then it adds an extra complication to updating them. Do you download one set and convert, or 2 different sets?

The split set takes up a fair amount of extra room, so that is not an option for everyone.

That's all I meant.

The full set and the update packs come in zipped split format so there's no need to bother with 7z in this case. Yes it takes up more space, but not enough to worry about if your roms are on a 4TB drive for example.

Obviously if you have space it's not a problem, but if you don't then split sets are a real waste of space. Especially when you don't get any extra content at all.

As it happens, I do have space so I downloaded the latest (0.158) split set and tried to get them working with 'model 2 emulator' (Model 2) and 'Supermodel' (Model 3).

First I tried to use Rom Mapping, but the trouble is that although it 'works', it passes the wrong name to the emulator, which causes it to fail as they need to be the exact names in the database.

However I did have success by using symbolic links. Although these are relatively time-consuming to set up, they allow the emulators to work seamlessly.

Whatever games that run on the emulators but are not in MAME I kept.

All in all I have not saved any space, quite the opposite, but it should at least be easier to update. Hopefully now I can see if I can do something similar with the MESS set.
