We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

What Emulators are for what Systems (List)

Wow haven't checked this thread in a few. I really like whats going on here.

Here's a couple from the top of the list

Anex86 (Homepage?) I couldn't find an actual homepage for this. This is the 2nd link in google search results. Latest version I could find. Direct link to emu file will not work from here, you have to go to the page.

1964 (Official)(Homepage, Emu and Patches) Original homepage is gone. Now it looks like an online emu of some sort.

1964 (Un-Official)(Homepage)

SSF (Homepage, Emulator, Other Versions)

Homepage is in japanese. Link is for latest build. I would like to add that between version 012 Beta and 11 Alpha R5" almost all the US games are playable.

I noticed you have cdiemu listed for Phillips CDi...have you ever tried TinyCDi or MESS? both of which use CHD images if I recall. I was going to write a conversion app...as if I recall correctly there was a little funkyness to making the CHD's for use with TinyCDi. TinyCDi was a side project of David Haywood which was just pulling out the code from MESS and making things a little bit more easy on the end user...but I think he only made one release since there wasn't a lot of interest in the CD-i...like ever.

I never tried, but the only questions I have are, are games playable and do they play well?

Now that I think of it, do you know what wasn't easy on the end user? Was it just because mess is difficult to work with that can be fixed in a well-scripted module?

I ask because I just finished the new mess module and now would be a good time to add another system. If MESS and TinyCDi only support chds, then I will need at least one game to test. So if you have one, please link it to me somewhere. Thanks.

I just read the included txt and with no mpeg support, kinda makes me wonder if it's even worth including. Would you happen to know if there have been any CDi improvements over the last 2 years of mess (since TinyCDi was compiled)?

MESS (and TinyCDi) only supports the Mono player so it's compatibility is way lower than CDiEmu. Some games do work well enough on MESS, but like I said only those that work on the mono.

@ djvj -

If I recall there were more changes made to MESS post TinyCDi...mpeg support I believe was added.

How well ether emulate the CD-i I don't know...however CDIemu has a time limit per session, unless you bought it...hence why I suggest the other two emu's.

I think the main issue back when TinyCDi rolled out was that most games were in CDI image format and CHDman didn't support CDI at that time...so you had to load the images up in a VCD, then re-rip them to BIN...at which point you could then feed the image to CHDman and all was well. However newer versions of CHDman support CDI...however the new CHD version wouldn't be supported by TinyCDi...but would be with the latest MESS.

Yeah ease of use...is probably from not having thousands of options to over whelm the end user...but I never got around to giving it a good shake.

@ brolly -

You may very well be correct...but there is the session time limit to consider...unless you own CDIemu...then the discussion is moot.

I don't think we should be bothered with tinycdi if mess is better. I'd rather concentrate on mess support. But I will need one game for it.

Kodiak, well... even if you didn't purchase it there's a hacked version floating around just saying :)

I agree CDi support should be added to the MESS module though, it does emulate some games well enough.

I'll pm you about the chds djvj.

Demul (Homepage, 0.56, 0.56 GPU Plugin, Netplay Plugin, Pad Plugin) (0.57, 0.57 DX11 Plugin)

i included both 0.56 and 0.57 and available plugins. (0.56 seems to be the ahk module supported version. i havent tested if 0.57 works with the same ahk module yet.) i might try setting it up today and see if it works. (you can click the homepage button, shows a list of the updates/new features.)

I looked at the list I see that BSNES is listed as the best but setup of this emulator is hard. I have wasted over 4 hours trying to set it up but still failing. This is just the emulator setup not even incorporating it into hyperspin. I tried to follow the guide on the site but I did get it to work. I just do not understand the cleaning and unzipping of the files then it makes multiple parts. Can anyone help me out with this?

I don't think it was meant as the best but rather preferred. My preferred emulator would be Mednafen because it functions quite well and all you need to do is set up this one emulator and not several. I've got six systems linked to it. Easy easy setup.

what version are u trying to setup? make sure your using bsnes v088 and not the latest one v091 as it has problems going to full screen on startup. also with v088 u don't need to clean the roms. just unzip them so they are sfc files.

some games also require a special dsp rom file. a link has been provides in the ahk module. if u need anymore help let me know. and I'm happy to help

Just wanted to say thanks to djvj and to all of those who have contributed to this, it's been very insightful. @mameshane or anyone who may know... I have been looking at the bsnes emulator for snes and checked the website and know it's now called higan. I justed wanted to hear your thoughts on the latest version v092 or if using bsnes 088 is still the recommended/preferred version ? Thank you for your responses :)

i havent tried the higan, but i did try a newer version of bsnes and it didnt like to go to auto fullscreen on loading, so i use 088 still. not sure if higan has been fixed to allow this again or not.

Is Mednafen really preferred over Magic Engine for TG16/PCE? I am a huge fan of those systems and I've had Magic Engine for well over a decade.. I think it's pretty much perfect. The one downside I guess is that you have to pay for it, but for one of my favorite systems ever, it was worth it. Similarly, for C64, is CCS64 worth paying for over Winvice?

Posted

Mednafen, yes it is better than Magic Engine now besides it's free like you say.

CCS64 over WinVice? Nope, even though you might need CCS64 for some particular games, unline Magic Engine, CCS64 is shareware anyway so you're not forced to pay anything.

I'll have to give Mednafen a shot, but I have to say Magic Engine is pretty much flawless to me. I can't see how it would be improved. The fact that mednafen is a multi-system emulator means to me that it's focus is not purely on one system or another, so I assume that the emulation for a particular system isn't quite as good as a dedicated emulator would be. I do have to admit I'm pretty disappointed with the NES emulators out there though, so maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.

Sorry, but this kind of assumptions make no sense, for one thing the teams working on each emulation driver are different it's not like it's the same guy juggling with 10 different drives at the same time and they don't focus on all systems at the same time, like now for example they are mostly working on the PSX driver. PCE emulation on Mednafen is very mature, besides being cycle accurate and has nothing to envy from Magic Engine, it's also free and is constantly updated (not really the PCE driver since it doesn't need it), when was the last time you saw a Magic Engine update?

Oh and PC-FX emulation on Mednafen beats the hell out of the paid Magic Engine FX just saying.

I wouldn't say Mednafen is the best NES emulator though, there's still quite some work to do there, same for PSX, but if they keep their standards I wouldn't be surprised it would become the best emulator for these systems later down the road.

I don't have as much interest in PC-FX emulation.. I have one of the only games here sitting on my shelf I was interested in (Battle Heat) with a dusty PC-FX. I'll give Mednafen a try though like I said. I read elsewhere some good points about the ease of loading isos vs. having to mount them in a virtual CD program for Magic Engine.. but as far as the lack of updates in ME, like you say for Mednafen, if the emulation is basically complete, then there's no need to release an update. It's still one of my favorite emulators and I just wanted to recommend it to anyone who came to the thread.

Thanks djvj! I was having issues finding a SNES emulator for my setup. I always used zsnes in the past however I am having some problems.

B.O.B graphics issues:

A sound problem with Mortal Kombat:

I then tried snes9x which fixed up B.O.B but had worse sound issues for Mortal Kombat. Your recommended emulator or bsnes has both working. :) Thank you!
