Too difficult to get running

I do not know how to get this thing running.. never before I have experience an emulator frontend that requieres so much just to get something like nintendo to get running properly!!!  I have used many frontends over the years and all is requiered is to put the path to your roms and frontend and that's it.  Here I have to have everything perfect to get running I and I have to use different tools and still do not run, great frontend is just too hard to get the simplest games to run without spending alot time configuring the very basic.. and this is coming from somebody who probably have used every single emulator frontend out there with no issues.

Yes it is a challenge I remember giving up several times probably for similar reasons. You do need to understand that everything needs to match EXACTLY, so system names need to be correct even down to case and game names and Rom names also need to match exactly.

So what have you tried? Are you using RocketLauncher or just trying to launch with HyperSpin? Have you followed any guides? There videos guides in my signature and also look for Austin585 guides as well. Also check this out. http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/topic/2187-how-to-install-hyperspin/

There have been lots of changes recently which probably won't help but there is a lot of help also.

Not giving up but feel like it should be easier to run.. before I used it and got some emulator running but now nothing.. btw what is Rocket Launcher?

Posted

RocketLauncher used to be RocketLauncher.0 until it broke off into a completely separate project.  As Gig said, there are lots of good guides and videos out there that will really help.  If you need direct support for RocketLauncher, unfortunately you'll have to go to their site.

RocketLauncher can be found here and was formally know as HyperLaunch, you will see it in HyperHQ as a execution type, you get a choice of execution either HyperSpin or HyperLaunch.

Some systems are quite easy to get working just by using HyperSpin and adding the correct paths and extension into HyperHQ. For example Mame and some Rom based systems are quite simple.

More complicated systems will need RocketLauncher to get them running.

Its a lot to take in.  I know i was super frustrated when i first started out.  But now I have a pretty good grasp of what to do when I add new systems, change artworks and themes, and general debugging.  Do some lurking around here and do searches on any questions you have.  Dont be afraid to ask questions and send friend requests, we're all really helpful people.

Then: 1 system setup (snes), 2 hours.. Today: 5 minutes ... How...? Read all guides, videos, ask, teamview, try try try

Just start with Daphne and Taito Type X then do RetroArch with MESS module after that do some ahk scripting and as a bonus learn to use the pen tool for creating top notch artwork.

taken me 3 years to get used the amazing hyperspin. and one year to design a control panel. this hobby takes time to perfect.

once you know what to do it's a breeze. I've learnt lots from gigapig's guides on youtube! all the time I refer to them. or Craig Anderson.

Has anyone got retroach mess core working?

Has anyone got retroach mess core working?

Hell no, I tried a couple today because I dumped all my old configs had stopped working. Tried Astrocade and coleco and all that happens is the config gets loaded into the emu. I'm not going to play Backgammon on the Astrocade anyway, what am I doing adding these old systems lol.

I am still using MESS for a lot of systems because it's very easy to use and I can use hlsl just like mame. I like how retro arch displays the games but without a functioning MESS core I've got to stick with mess. The only issue I've had is that the mess module needs updating for Lynx to rotate the vertical games. Besides that everything is golden....why do I need retroarch again??? [emoji5]️

I was able to setup Retroarch to use the MESS core and launch games through HyperSpin/HyperLaunchHQ. I am using this for Atari 5200, Atari 7800, CollecoVision, and IntelliVision, off the top of my head, maybe a couple more too. I set that up over a month ago, and it's working well for me. As far as I remember, nothing special to do except having the proper system bios in the Retroarch/systems/MESS folder (I think). I'll have to verify this once I get home, and will confirm later.

Hi there Raz, in addition to that you'll also have to setup core configs in RetroArch in retroarch-core-options.cfg in order to support cartridges. You'll have to do it manually because the Core Options won't be selectable without running the ROM first, and the ROM won't run without having the following settings changed.

Without it RetroArch will just do nothing if you try to load some cartridge such as Atari. RetroArch MESS core uses softlist by default.

Following shows my MESS core options in retroarch-core-options.cfg. Notice that bold settings which must be changed.

mess_read_config = "disabled"
mess_write_config = "disabled"
mess_saves = "game"
mess_auto_save = "disabled"
mess_mouse_enable = "disabled"
mess_throttle = "enabled"
mess_cheats_enable = "disabled"
mess_nobuffer = "enabled"
mess_hide_nagscreen = "enabled"
mess_hide_infoscreen = "enabled"
mess_hide_warnings = "enabled"
mess_alternate_renderer = "enabled"
mess_softlists_enable = "disabled"
mess_softlists_auto_media = "disabled"
mess_softlists_auto_media = "disabled"
mess_media_type = "cart"
mess_boot_to_bios = "disabled"
mess_boot_to_osd = "disabled"
mess_boot_from_cli = "enabled"

dsync89,

I'm not sure what you are referring to, however I did not have to go through the steps you mentioned, and all my Retroarch/MESS systems are working fine.

To be honnest, it has been over a month I set these up, and I cannot remember if there was anything special besides getting the proper bios for each system. All I know is my stuff is working good now, and I never really had an issue setting this up.

When I get home, I'll double check my settings and chime in if I find any special steps I took to get this working, but like I said above, I don't think so.

Hey dsync,

Here are my retroarch-core-options:

mess_read_config = "disabled"
mess_write_config = "disabled"
mess_saves = "game"
mess_auto_save = "disabled"
mess_mouse_enable = "disabled"
mess_throttle = "disabled"
mess_cheats_enable = "disabled"
mess_nobuffer = "disabled"
mess_hide_nagscreen = "disabled"
mess_hide_infoscreen = "disabled"
mess_hide_warnings = "disabled"
mess_alternate_renderer = "disabled"
mess_softlists_enable = "enabled"
mess_softlists_auto_media = "enabled"
mess_media_type = "cart"
mess_boot_to_bios = "disabled"
mess_boot_to_osd = "disabled"
mess_boot_from_cli = "enabled"

I never actually went in there and changed anything, that, I am sure of. I see a couple differences between your settings and mine, but mine was set to use cart anyways, and again, not my doing.
I am currently using Retroarch/MESS core for 5 systems, Atari 5200, 7800, ColecoVision, IntelliVision and Vectrex.
All I can recall is that you need to put the bios for the system you want to use in Retroarch\system\mess folder. Another important fact is that the bios needs to be named using the MESS naming convention, example, a5200.zip with a5200.rom inside it for Atari 5200, intv.zip with intv.rom inside it for IntelliVision. Google for MESS BIOS names.
Also, now I remember after checking the settings, in HyperLaunchHQ, under the system you are trying to setup, Modules tab, highlight Retroarch and click the 'Edit the global module settings' icon. From there you will need to provide the path to you MESS_BIOS_Rom_Folder. I think that should do the trick!

Good luck guys!

Hey guys everything you have both written is new info. Believe me a lot of seasoned hyperspin nerds have failed to get the mess core to work so you may have provided the missing link. The bios info has been mentioned before but I think there is new info here.

Just to recap, for me, what was important here was putting a BIOS for each system you will use in RetroArch\system\mess folder.

BIOS must be using the MESS naming convention (a5200, a7800, coleco, intv, vectrx, etc...). BIOS must have the .rom extension, and be compressed within a zip file wearing the same name.

Global Module Settings for RetroArch in HyperLaunchHQ must be set to point to the MESS BIOS folder.

I am pretty sure, like 95% sure that is all I did and is required to get this working.

I may be missing a step, but honestly doubt it.

Mans struggle against the MESS.

Raz does your core config have a "." in front of the file name and is in your config folder? That is the one that is being written to on my setup and it only has one entry for MESS, "mess_media_type = "cart""

I also acquired the 0.161 bios set and put those in the system\mess folder. You'd expect those to be named correctly but the Atari 5200 Roms are named 5200.rom and 5200a.rom. So is it true I have to rename and rezip? I did try that but still nothing.

Lastly the Roms themselves, do you need 7z enabled?

I'm pretty sure the stars have to be aligned to get this bugger working.

I just remembered reading that someone downloaded the "Stable version" from the nightlys but that version is from last year. Being a prize muppet I had done the same. I got PC Engine working in the newest build but still not any MESS.

Time for a break.

So far I've only tried to run the MESS core on Atari 5200 and 7800 and no problem so far. You are right that you'll have to also specify the MESS_BIOS_Roms_folder for the RetroArch under the Edit Global Settings button.

I've also attached a pictures of my MESS BIOS in case it helps to clarify things, all are zipped.

I've been struggling to setup the MESS core too, but luckily managed to solve it within hours :-) Hopefully the solution thus far prove to be useful.
