rastan Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I know years ago it seemed like a pain in the ass getting certain mame roms to work with mame.... and I remember using MAME on my soft modded Wii.... it was more than a pain to find the right rom sets that worked. Ok, so I don't have a 169 SET as of yet and haven't really been looking too hard (I'll get one sooner or later) for the time being I do have a 161 SET and I have been using it with MAME 169 Emulator and so far the games I've tried all seem to work fine so my question is how much has changed in the actual ROM SETS from 161 to 169?
Spawk Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 A lot! ...or maybe nothing. This document does not cover every aspect of how the set itself is stored, it's more about the software side of things but a quick look at the changelog: mametesters.org/changelog_page.php reveals that there hasn't been many name changes lately. Which would surely break games. Keep testing though and your bound to hit one that will be missing a file or just refuses to load. A rom that has went from "not working" to "working" in the last few updates say. But yeah I guess most will still work, maybe a lot of the updates lately have been on roms that are marked "not working" anyway so you wouldn't notice??? In any case, it's never advisable to mix sets/mame builds. And although some may work, they may "work better" when you update! There is NO better place to get the latest mame than PleasureDome (they only host the latest set though). All that being said, I'm still running .158 LOL. I've been slowly (very slowly!) trimming down my set to a more manageable wheel. This has to be done manually. I see no other way and with work and other obligations I am lucky to test a couple a day. I am just not sure I want to update and start that whole process over... or somehow pick out of the new set what I've already selected... and if I'm updating, I don't want to miss out on anything that's new either!
rastan Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 already in motion lol should have that 169 soon.
rastan Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 Ok, I'm all good with MAME 169 and the ROM SET! Is the mame XML up to date for 169? normally with most stuff I just let RL make a XML from the ROMS in the folder except with MAME but I'm wondering if I should let RL build a XML from the folder? never really thought about it before but just wondering if anything was added that may not be on the current XML I have.
alcoatjez Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Check this link for the name changes per MAME version. The changelog Spawk posted shows issues, not name changes. Nice link though I strongly suggest using a ROM manager to check your ROMs, instead of looking at the name changes. The latest MAME database (unofficial) can be found in the Databases forum here.
Metalzoic Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 All the name changes suck. So lame. Throws off your themes, art, wheels, bezels, vids... screws up everything basically. Anyone have a good way to fix all that?

Anyone have a good way to fix all that? Get Hypertools (download here). It lets you scan the media folders for both HS & RL and you are able to cleanup files that don't match the database you are using. It also includes a DB-editor and has an audit function too. I often use it in combination with Don's Hypertools when making custom databases. It kinda sucks there is not one good program to use which combines everything in one. I use Hypermint, Hypertools & Don's Hypertools and with those three I can do everything I want.
JayC Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Same here, would be cool if rocketlauncher could handle those tasks as well! Idea for future updates RL team

I just update my rom set from 1.60 to 1.69. The torrent just downloaded an additional 10GB of content. If you want to update it your existing setup. it's not a lot of work. I don't use game themes so the name changes don't affect me. Still need to look at the wheels and videos for changes. Does hyperync reflect these changes? Might try that first.
rastan Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 i think the one i got was at 53gigs?I probably wouldn't notice much of the theme changes...i like themes but there not a deal breaker with mame because sometimes I play a clone that doesn't have a theme (but the parent does or vise versa) I run my mame with the clones showing but I may change that since my set should be up to date (169 mame with 169 rom set).. I have it so it's wheels only but I think i'm gonna let RL make the XML from the folder and take it off wheels only just to see if anything good is being missed...
newoski Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Does HyperTools work with the latest MAME sets? It errored out last time I tried to use a mame.xml from the 168 set, since the program hasn't been updated to reflect the changes to the mame.xml structure...

It errored out last time I tried to use a mame.xml from the 168 set, since the program hasn't been updated to reflect the changes to the mame.xml structure... I'm using Phulsofs latest unofficial database for the 169 set (mame.xml one). I didn't sync mame thru Hypersync since the latest official release which was 166 or something like that and the cleanup in Hypert00ls found around 700 files spread over wheels, videos and themes. It definitely works but trying to match them again to the correct entries will be annoying to say the least

Are you saying use that to check the roms one by one, renaming manually as I go? I'd be interested in something that could look at the latest DB (with correct names), compare that to your roms and delete what's wrong/old etc... Then do the same to the media files, but instead of deleting just rename them. I grabbed some program that said it would do that, but that it would remove necessary bios files too. Problem is I couldn't find a list of what those bios files actually are so I couldn't risk trying it. I'd love a good, foolproof tutorial for this.
Spawk Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Romfoldercleaner will clean out everything not in the database (including the bios') then there is a bios only download which you can throw back into the mame folder after the clean. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk

I'll try my best at a foolproof tutorial how I go about cleaning up my media folder with Hypertools. I assume that you have the correct paths set in the parameters tab. To be clear this method is only to match/remove incorrect media. It will not check for roms that aren't in the database. 1. Goto the cleanup tab and check the folders which you would like to scan in Hyperspin or Rocketlauncher 2. Select your system from the drop down menu where it says Selected System, don't select one from the systems list on the left 3. Click on perform check and wait about a minute or two for mame to finish scanning, unless you have an ssd off course 4. After the scan it will show which files don't match your database 5. Sort by filename if it isn't already sorted by that so you can easily see if you have media from different folders with the same name 6. In between the two columns change 'copy to new name' to 'move to new name' 7. Match the incorrect media from the left column with the rom list from the right and click on 'rename to match for selected rom', make sure you have the right rom selected because it will overwrite any current media if it exists no matter what you chose in the previous step It's a little bit of manual labour to match the media with the correct roms but at least you don't have to check the entire list one by one or rename each individual file manually.

Awesome! Thanks Yeukes, appreciate it. I'll give that a shot this weekend when I have a few. Unless they are available in the usual places?
Spawk Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Clrmamepro can create a set of bios' from the complete set if you are so inclined... I hate that program though. Check HERE for a complete 0.169 set of bios'. Make a backup of your /mame/media/ folders before doing this. If hypersync fails to get any of the renamed roms media, you can at least restore it from there.
