DoomMaster Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 I am new to the whole HyperSpin and MAMEuifx thing. Before I got involved in this, I was playing coin op games and using MAME on my original XBOX using CoinOPs 6. Everything works great. The original XBOX is over 15 years old. It is basically a Pentium III pc running at 733 MHz, and has only 64 megs of memory. Emulation works beautifully on this system. So, why do you guys think that you need such a powerful pc for emulation. If you are having problems with some games, could it be that just maybe your computer is too fast, too powerful. I still have my Pentium III pc that I custom built way back in the mid 90s. Helen's processor is only 600 MHz, her FSB is only 133 MHz, and she has 512 megs of memory. Her video is an AGP 8X graphics board, an NVidia GeForce 6200 with 256 mb of DDR2 memory. Her sound card is the best sound card ever produced for a pc- a SoundBlaster AWE 32. Her operating systems are Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows XP Professional. I tried the new version of MAMEuifx 32-bit, it works great on this old computer. In fact, MAME runs better on my 600 MHz Pentium III pc then it does on Ruby, my 3.7 GHz AMD pc. Just something to think about

Some games on mame do need a more powerful machine especially when running shaders, etc. it all come down to the settings and what shape your pc is in.. because you say mame runs beter on your pIII 600mhz then it does on your 3.7 Ghz AMD... I know AMD came a long way but a pentium is still a intel chip and that could be a factor as well as what shape that computer is in.... what drivers are being used how much memory... and whatever else is going on underneath the OS. As for MAME running better on your XBOX... you're not exactly running the DOS/WIndows verison of mame on the XBOX... so the XBOX mame emulator probably makes good use of the XBOX hardware... You really shouldn't be having any problems with MAME games..other than the ones that aren't emulated that great to begin with.
Spawk Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Also, mame is just a starting point for HS. Once you get into emulating the cd based systems you will want a better pc and graphics card. Not to mention you can add actual pc games to HS! Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
32assassin Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 the first windows pc I got was a hand me down with 233 Hz processor 16 Megs of ram with a 4.3 Gig hard drive. guess what it ran MAME without a problem, Why would it struggle emulating a board that was released in the 1980s. try running any game in MAME witch was released after 2000 and see how well your Xbox runs it. and then tell me if you think our current PC as too fast.
Metalzoic Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Like the others said, the power isn't for MAME. It's for MAME with bezels and heavy duty shaders, consoles, modern arcade games and up-to-date modern PC games. I wanted an arcade machine that can play Mat Mania or Ghouls'N Ghosts on MAME just as easily as it can play Street Fighter V & Killer Instinct at max settings and a stupid high frame-rate. I do still have my old Xbox I modded with a 350gig drive... haven't taken it out of the storage shed in... more than a decade?
rastan Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I remember running emulators on my 486..... and I think I was running them on my 386 DX 33mhz as well.... i never was a PC type of person... we were Commodore 64 people then AMIGA!!!! but during the mid 90s.. it was clear to me that the PC wasn't the old PC and times were moving on...I had a 486 until around 1999 or 2000 then I got a machine from gateway that had a 1gig processor which I thought was god like at the time... the harddrive was probably 20gig... laughable by today's standards.... but I remember running PS1 emulation using actual PS1 discs and even feeling special because I could make a ISO from the discs and run them on the emulator. Mame is the cherry buster of emulators.... and I definitely remember other ARCADE emulators from that era that emulated ms pac man, donkey kong and all the foundation games perfectly on low end machines (486, etc) My main bull$hitting emulation machine is only a i3 until I finally move everything to another dedicated machine with more power...and with mame.. the only games that I get problems with are some of the more recent games that run a bit slow but they probably just aren't emulated that great to begin with... I know stuff like SEGA MODEL 3 just aren't worth me playing.... but sega model 2 works like a champ... sammy works good and naomi is iffy.. some stuff is good and some stuff isn't... taito type x runs great... taito type x2 is iffy.... but my thing isn't if the games are playable... I'm more concern with the actual emulation so as long as I can emulate the game/system... I'm cool with that.... because all I have to do is run it on a better system. overall mame should run fine on any machine.... especially the foundation games
SkyHighGam3r Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I guess if all you want to do is emulate things like MAME or Cartridge systems then that would be fine. For a lot of people that is...For ME, I am emulating PS2 and Wii games, so serious power is needed. Plus I future proofed the beast so I could play the X360 and PS3 emulators that are coming along. As someone mentioned above, being able to add PC games into it is nice.My entire setup is built around that console idea though. You can check out my signature if you want to see my take on doing HyperSpin as a console, it mentions all the systems I emulate and what kind of power I run.
DoomMaster Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 My XBOX runs the Metal Slug series just fine. I think those games were released after y2k.

I think you would need even the best stuff out right now to have a somewhat good chance at those when they get to a more working state.
DoomMaster Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 As far as emulating the Amiga and the PS2, I do not. I have real Amiga computers. I also have several Sony Playstation 2 consoles. The PS2 is THE number one video gaming console in Earth's history. The console is so popular, that games were still being produced for it in 2014, and it was outselling the PS3. So no, I will not emulate the greatest video gaming console of all time. I prefer to have the real thing. I collect PS2 hardware and games. I have almost every PS2 game, and they are all in like new to still shrink-wrapped condition. I also collect the original XBOX. I paint them and mod them. I have almost every XBOX game, in like new to still shrink-wrapped condition. In my professional video gaming opinion, all modern video gaming consoles and video games for those consoles suck. The Sony Playstation 2 and the original Microsoft XBOX are the last of the great video gaming consoles. I also think that the Super Nintendo and the Nintendo 64 are great consoles. I wish now that I never sold them, just because my Russian girlfriend at the time thought they were stupid. She made me chose between her or the "video games". I chose her, but, I broke up with her soon after. She was crying to me over the phone, saying that "no man has ever broke up with her". I swore from then on that I would never chose a woman over the things that I love. I am now 58 years old, and still not married. WOMEN, do not try to force me to give up my video games, something that I love more then anything or anyone, you will lose! Ok, I will get off my soap box now, lol.

I'm pretty sure I DO have the best out there lol, you can check the link in my signature for my stats.

Not to mention there are a great many women who enjoy or appreciate gaming... The stigma some feel towards gaming is ridiculous. It's a hobby like any other, it's good for you, and it's something fun you can do with other people.I can't agree more regarding PS2 and modern consoles.
