The HyperSpin 2 beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

i5 processor fried, thinking of replacing with an i7.

Hey guys, so I went to boot up my htpc last weekend and well, wouldn't post with my cpu led lit up red meaning "Cannot see CPU". Wonderful.

Make a long story short after replacing the mb and metering my Power Supply and ruling out memory, looks like my poor i5 4670k...is dead. I don't know how the hell this happened....it was water cooled and my temps hovered around 75-80 C under full load @ 4.4 which I thought was considered acceptable. The only thing I could think of is my chip was one of the one's that required just a tad more voltage to be stable at 4.4 than what was recommended, but after researching tons on OCíng, I thought it would be ok as long as my temps were good.

Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing it with a i7 4790k. Now I know HT doesn't do shit for emulation, but I'm looking at clock speed here, and that thing turbo's up to 4.4 GHZ.....STOCK which was basically my OC on my i5 anyway. Because i'll be honest, I'm scared to screw with OCíng now. My processor only lasted 1 year :(.

Plus, it will help with  "Occulizing" my htpc anyway since I read an i5 will not be sufficient for the Rift.

Another question I have say I decide to just replace my i5....now my processor is supposedly under warranty, yet Intel.... they fucking kill me. They sell unlocked processor's yet they state that CPU failure due to OCíng is not covered. If I sent in my chip will they be able to tell if it was fried from OCíng? Who's to say I didn't have a power outage that caused it?

Your not looking into the Broadwell chips then? The i7 5775c uses 65w but runs a little slower than the previous i7.

If it were me and knowing the Hyperthreading isn't going to make a big difference, I'd go with the cheaper i5.

You've made sure it's dead? Not by hitting it with a hammer but taking it out and rubbing the contacts with an eraser.

I'm waiting for the 6700k, in your case I guess that won't be an option as you want to buy now.

The 4790k is the best bet for the money right now imo (for emulation purposes at least where you won't be using the extra cores), the broadwell chips aren't really worth it unless you are considering using the integrated graphics. If I had to buy a cpu right now that would be my choice as well.

They might not be able to tell for sure if it fried due to overclocking, but they can surely tell you overclocked it so you're screwed. They do offer warranty on OC'ed cpus, but you have to purchase that separately:

As for providing warranty under OC'ed cpus just because they sell unlocked cpus that doesn't really make sense, if they did that everyone would just start frying cpus like crazy since intel would give you a replacement no matter what, they obviously have good reasons for not doing it. They clearly state they don't support it and do offer you an extension plan to cover it which is actually pretty nice and it's also cheap. You shouldn't get into overclocking without this plan considering the increase in price is rather small.

I guess you could try signing up for the plan now and then return your current cpu after a while. I see you can buy it from their website, but I'm not exactly sure how/if that will work though as you normally subscribe to the plan when you purchase the cpu.

Just curious... ram voltage?

There's still that "funny" thing with intel saying 1.5v+ will fry the ram managment module inside the cpu and mobo manufacturers saying 1.65v is ok...

Well, I spoke to Intel this afternoon...they are overnighting a brand new i5 4670k for 25 bucks and I send back the old one, no questions asked as long as they receive my old processor.

Did not ask of I oc'ed it, they just looked up the serial number, saw I was still way under warranty and voila...tomorrow hopefully everything will be reassembled and as the ROG says, "Game On".
