nintenjo Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Hi All, I have been using HS flawlessly for a while except for one big issue.. when i leave my HS running after about 2-3 days idling on the menus it starts to get slower and slower to respond and input becomes very laggy, eventually after about 4 days of continuous idle in my arcade cabinet HS becomes unusable due to the slow performance and i am forced to reboot HS to fix the issues.. but inevitably it will happen again after a few days. I recently updated HS to latest 1.4 beta to try and fix the issue as i thought it might be a memory leak.. but this has not helped. Any tips?
dark13 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Task manager should help understanding the problem, if it's related to cpu usage or memory issue.
nintenjo Posted March 27, 2016 Author Posted March 27, 2016 Ok when it happens next ill have a close look.. any ideas why it would happen though? No other apps on that PC suffer from the same issue, only HS?
JoyStickKilla Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Known issue with hyperspin if you keep it running, memory leak issue. Just restart it every so often.
bulbousbeard Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Completely unacceptable. If it's leaking memory, it's causing problems for programs you run from the get-go. Use a better frontend. Attract Mode even runs Hyperspin themes now.

progets Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Half this thread is gone. Over moderation? "Sticks and stones..." LOL
Duckie Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 just out of curiosity...why do you even have the system running idle for 2-3 days ? If it was a like a torrent/download/seed/ftp/work system i could understand. (as i have that myself) But why a system dedicated to HS?
progets Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 @agent47 - More than one thread was changed/removed. Maybe not by you. @Duckie - Because they have an arcade cabinet that just runs HS 24/7.
progets Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Let's talk about the actual problem. How about proof of a "memory leak"? If you leave HS on in attract mode and it goes through a thousand themes, videos, etc. more memory will be consumed. How much RAM is in the system with the "memory leak"? If you turn off attract mode (so you're not loading tons of stuff over time) do you still have the problem? How to solve it if there really is a memory leak? Well how about the obvious, schedule a reboot in the middle of the night when it's not in use. Maybe there is some other background process that is the problem. Maybe they don't have the best setup and it's really a problem in the build. One switch turns on my whole cabinet but I know others have a challenge with this, if you only need one switch/button to power the whole thing properly then it's silly to not turn off your cabinet when it's not being used.
scooter1974 Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I have never left mine on any more than a few hours. It uses no more ram than leaving Firefox or Chrome running with a few tabs open. I have never left it on for days though, so I am not really to say how much it would use then.

I will setup a schedule midnight restart to begin with.. its a 4GB 64bit Win7 machine.. I am confused by your comment though "attract mode and it goes through a thousand themes, videos, etc. more memory will be consumed" surly as each image / video / theme is loaded into memory another one is un-loaded meaning that the memory usage should not continue to grow once the 'cache' is full? While thats not a memory leak problem it is still a concern that in attract mode HS continues to expand in memory as no matter how much RAM i had eventually HS will bloat?
JoyStickKilla Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I'm not sure what you mean by half this thread. I removed one post that served no purpose other than to call someone an asswipe, considering that provides no value to the thread at all. I think that provided more value than any other post in this thread, especially the one from him telling someone to use a different frontend. And I didn't call anyone any names, just a classification. Nothing more than you did on the playground to your elementary school friends. No need to delete such things on a forum, if peoples feelings get hurt over something insignificant like that then there is no hope for them in life as it is.
wesfranks Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 PSA- (loudspeaker) Don't feed the trolls!!!!!!!!! That is all. (silence)
Metalzoic Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Nice to see you are back around I was worried that you left us for good! This really made me laugh! The longest I've left mine running was probably about 7 days straight, but I don't recall having any issues. I think that was back when I was running Win7. I'll go turn mine on right now and run it through this weekend to see what it does.
Metalzoic Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Well I woke up today, day 3 of it running, and tested it out. No issues at all scrolling through the wheel hopping in and out of systems, scrolling the wheel in those systems. ...and then all of a sudden the screen went pure white with a small exclamation point within a circle in the middle of the screen. That's it. Alt-Tab showed no other programs other than HS running, ESC wouldn't exit HS, Alt-F4 wouldn't close it. Had to close it with the task manager. HS fired right back up without a restart and worked fine again. Not sure what the hell that was as it's never done it before, but maybe it had to do with memory leaking?
bulbousbeard Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 See? It's crap dude. Arcade cabinets should be bulletproof. Rock solid. Hyperspin isn't. It has ONE JOB. All it has to do is launch games. It can't do that with IMPLODING periodically? Nope. Time to move on.™ That and it probably doesn't even work with ASIO MAME making it useless.

Flash itself has some problems with memory leaking but it should not be THAT problematic in HS. Moreover flash does not trash unused stuff from memory immediatly but runs a garbage collector freeing RAM from time to time (let's say every some minutes). Maybe is the problem related to attract mode? I did some testing to check memory leaking as some files of my skin have potential memory leaking issues and could not see major problem in the short run, even a 10 hours test (automatically changing wheel item every 10 seconds) didn't show significant problems.

Not sure. I've never had it do that before. Could also have been caused by me scrolling and hoping in and out of systems as fast as I could repeatedly. Or maybe because nearly all of my Main Menu themes are Cinematic. Had I not been doing that I doubt it would have had any issue because I was having no lag or slow downs or delays. So this test was 3 days then issue. But my last 7 day run had no issues at all. Once I get Killer Instinct squared away i'll try it again.
Zingo Posted December 29, 2016 Posted December 29, 2016 Today my hyperspin crashed for me after running for about one hour. I left it in MAME sub menu, and let it idle while i was doing something else. After about one hour my computer restarted. Hypserspin was the only program running. Most likely memory leak. I think it is related to the attract mode (auto spinning) feature. Edit (2016-12-29): Forgot to mention, in MAME sub menu, I'm not using flash, i only use PNG-files as my videos. So i do not think it is related to flash.
