Great idea... I made a Unlicensed and Hack Games some time ago to include games I play as a kid (in south America we got many famicom clones with Chinese not licenced or hacked games like master fighter II... Super Mario 9... Street Fighter III...) and also include the sonic hacks... I think you got them all.

Unlicensed games are being included in official databases lately so it will be nice to have just the hacks in one list.

You said it, yeah that's the point, it will also clean official databases, probably the only ones that apply to official databases are translated games.

Yes, official databases must include unlicenced games released in physical format, but not hacks :/ ... butthey still interesting so this is the best solution.

I know that we do not really link roms here but there is a emu site that is a paradise for hacked games.  In fact, they have an entire section where you can download full romhacks packs pre-patched for NES and SNES.  I am not sure that they had any others but those two stood out to me.  The included games seem to be some of the better ones too.

I was thinking about starting this very project but am not that great with the art and themes so I am really glad you started this.  If I can help, let me know how I can.

Also, I thought it would be a good idea to have the genre wheels for this system be NES, SNES, N63, etc instead of the typical genres.  That way you could find specific games for each system.  That is, if we do not plan on having individual system wheels for hacks.

I know that I have hacked/enhanced games on my NES and SNES wheels,

I also set those up ages ago. I don't recall which hacks I have, but

I know that I tested every game in my wheels. Maybe I'll go through

my XMLs and add to your list. :) First things first, I'll finish my

current project first. :gamer:

If you were about to start a project just like this, welcome aboard, I (we) need your help!

If you join us, things will get serious, I won't blame you for creating great artwork for this!

I actually enjoy hacks, just most are buried in my XMLs.

The downside is that there is little to none artwork. :(

The only covers for hacked, unlicensed games I ever found were for Genesis/Mega Drive:

Here are some examples:

Artwork is fairly easy to create for hacks I think.

Really all you need is a generic picture of character(s) from the game, and then use a similar font to the original to pop a title on, then just set it in a box template for whatever system it's for.

One idea I had to speed things up as well was to grab the original box, and darken it and put "HACK" diagonally (as if stamped) across it.

I'm also thinking of using Sega's font for Sega hacked games, Nintendo's fonts for hacked NES/SNES games and so on, that should do for wheels, I have to figure out how to batch it though.

I'm trying to figure out a better solution for wheels, as Hacked Games probably won't use any kind of "official" wheels, my first try was to use wheels according to the consoles manufacturer, so for Nintendo hacked games I used a font similar to Nintendo's logo and the same for Sega hacked games.

It's just a prototype, if you have any idea, I'd like to hear that:

Adamg joined in this project and we'll start recording gameplay videos.

I like the wheel concept, it's a good start.

I might use wheels from the games with a "hack" stamp on it.

Who knows? :top:

It surely will result in a cleaner look, once me and Adamg sort what we can call a solid database, we can work on this stuff more definitely.

Can you show us how would this hack stamp look like? Maybe adding a few hack titles in a temp system or using your actual hacked games you mentioned before?

The Sega Font is kind of hard to read all together. I really like the idea though.

Is there any way to use those fonts on where it displays the games name on the bottom left?

Something similar to this, you'd still be able to read

the game's full name from the HS text at the bottom

and use the wheel to tell which original game that

is hacked. :)

I threw those together quickly, colors can be changed.

Maybe it's a crazy idea?

No, I really like the idea JSinn.  Would look great with some kind of 'hacked' theme.

Since all of the games that we will be adding are hacks of existing games, that is a perfect solution.  Since the game name is in the bottom left it would be neat to offer what is hacked about the game.  I was thinking that, like some systems with carts, we could create a hack screen where the cart would be in the theme with a blurb about the hack.

I liked this man, seems the best choice to use for our Hacked Games theme, great work as always!

As you say, the game description would inform us more about the hack, so no need to have all the info in the wheels.

I'm liking the 'hacked' theme concept, just not digging the bright green.

We could even build into the theme where the actual stamp is applied (animated)

after the game is finished being 'hacked' by the theme.

You can also add as much info to the XML in the description, you just need to

add either use a `r or `n (can't remember which) where you want the line

to return carriage. You could then add info about the hack itself. Make sense?

It surely would work, so far, me and Adamg we are picking some good hacked games, the best will be kept, among the main consoles, maybe Arcades, when we cross check our databases we can start adding extra info.

And all help is welcome, the more people involved, the better, Jsinn is adding some nice ideas to this project!

Green and black are hacker staples right?

Not sure on that, do hackers have a color theme?

I just remembered that if you add extra info to the description in

the XML you'll also need to more the text-field in the settings.

I remember doing this for my Japanese titles where I typed in the

English translation behind the game name, e.g.

Captain Tsubasa - Ougon Sedai No Chousen (Japan)

Challenge of Captain Tsubasa ~ golden generation

Zombie-mode must sleep now, lol.
