GenChaos Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I am totally new to this and I can't find the answer. But why do I need to set-up RocketLauncher with HyperSpin? Is it just for the UI? Someone please explain the benefits, thank you in advance.
Suhrvivor Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 You can: 1. Have smooth transition between the frontend and the game by using fade transitions. 2. Use bezels for old games that don't support widescreen, handheld systems, etc. 3. Run different games of a same platform with different emulator, or make a game to use specific settings. Very useful for those games that run only on certain emulators. 4. Add keyboard shorcuts to a controller to close emulator, change discs, change volume, etc. 5. Have all your roms and isos compressed in 7zip (one of the most efficent formats) to save a lot of storage space and have them be decompressed for you before launching a game. This one is huge. 6. Audit collection, check what games you have and which one you're missing. 7. Use custom shaders (this was just added and it's a promising feature) Useful for old emulators that don't support shaders. This is just of the top of my head, I'm sure anybody that uses RL can think more reasons. In short, it provides a bunch of ultility and eyecandy to improve any frontend, not just Hyperspin.
griffin518 Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 HyperSpin doesn't itself invoke any of the emulators to play the games. You need something to start up the emulators with the right options, etc. Unless you want to set each game with a unique execution string, that is. You can actually use HS to launch emulators, but it's way too basic, and might not work in some.
32assassin Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I"m over simplifying this a bit, actually allot when you select a game in Hyperspin (hit enter) you create a command --> "System Name" "Game Name" an emulator such as mame, can take this simple command and load a game. try it add this to a text file and save it as a .bat file in your MAME folder "MAME" "rom name" double click on the bat file and the game you added under rom name will load and exit without a problem. the majority of emulators do not have this simple loading method. Each emulator requires its own unique set of instructions. those unique instructions where found and saved in Modules. Rocketlauncher (aka an updated version of Hyperlaunch) uses those modules to load your games. Other features where added to make RL pretty but its basic feature is to launch and close your emulators using the same key defined by you.

thunder_nemesis Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Hi, I have a problem like this one, why I've to use another setup that need hours spent to re-setup everything, only for one emu (nulldc crashing at launch) and all working perfectly with H Y P E R launch (i had to write like this because in this forum they force to use RocketLauncher). I will try all the steps that can imagine because all the others emu and shortcut work perfectly, and rocket launcher doesn't add anything that the old one can't do. In any case rocketlauncher can be used in an existing setup? In case I will not solve nothing?

RocketLauncher added a lot of improvements over HyperLaunch. You could still use HL if you want, but it is no longer supported and it would be harder for most people to help you with anymore. They won't help you at all with it at the RL forums. If you just recently tried to setup RLauncherr for the first time I imagine it's been super frustrating. The recent update has caused issues with many systems (nullDc being one that isn't working quite right I think) so if you were having issues it would be really hard to tell if you were setting it up wrong, or if it was just a glitch. Might be better to wait until they have it all fixed.

If anyone has a fully working setup using Hyperlaunch and after a few years you come back here to see what's new, you don't need to feel compelled to update to Rocketlauncher. Same goes for any software you use regularly, if it works then why upgrade unless there is a must have feature. Update software will require you to spend time learning it. Most of us upgrade to learn what the program does so we can help others use it and just for the love of it.
thunder_nemesis Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 But in fact is work perfectly, and just after update to win 10 I had some problems, nullDC is one of them, and I've just asked if someone had my same problem, or similar, instead here and in the rlauncher forum all I've obtained when I've returned is anger, like I have only to shut up :-( even Djvj said : "We do not support hyperlaunch here." But I've only asked infos, I had a simple problem. http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/topic/25500-hyperlaunchhq-launch-nulldc-games-perfectly-hyperspin-hyperlaunch-crash-emu/ http://www.rlauncher.com/forum/showthread.php?3372-HELP-WITH-HYPERLAUNCH-ONLY-ONE-EMU-(can-t-worth-the-upgrade-IMHO)&p=27291#post27291
thunder_nemesis Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I understand that, but also in rocketlauncher (windows 10) I read there's many problems, and I've started to think that nulldc maybe is somewhat sensitive about ini editing, in fact after sometime hyperlaunchhq that first launch flawlessly roms, make the emu crash, and then finally when I've disabled autostart and launch manually a game, I've discovered that the game image itself can be the cause, so is nothing about hyper softwares but the guys has stated ( download all AGAIN, recreate all configs, retry to a world of endless configs and other painful things just to discover that the emulator is the weak ring)... Guys please don't state something that is not true, as I say this was a simple problem, and I figured out myself, after days and days, and you all know that nullDC with windows 10 is buggy, so simply can't you point in that direction? (saying that if the emu is not the problem you've to download rocketlauncher just for be sure) ?
thunder_nemesis Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Ok, the statement not true is that I have problem because of hyper(launch) instead was the emu crashing, no one point me to the fact that maybe nulldc is sensitive about the config file, or the games, or some settings, and, in any case, can be solved also without touching the nullDC ini, all people here stated that I have problem because of hyper(launch) that need to be switched to RL. But I've figured out myself, and I will also make a config of rocketlauncher just to see some improvement, and compare, but if you feel that I'm out of topic, don't : I've just replied to main thread question? Why do i need rocketlauncher? If you have a working setup, you don't need at all, but if you're new, you will not get support at all on hyper(launch) so it's better to switch to RL.
bleasby Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 About using RL versus any frontend built-in launch option: As the first posts of this thread perfectly pointed out, you can use HyperSpin or any other frontend built-in launch commands to launch the most basic emulators, but you will have big issues when trying to handle more complex emulators and per game settings. Besides that, RL offers a numerous of additional features partially mentioned as the ability to hide ugly window transitions, standardize exit buttons, add compressed roms support, multi player features, support for manuals, guides, save and load states, moves lists, in game disc change, in game pause menu, and so on, everything working across very different emulators seamlessly like they were developed by the same person. About RL versus hyperlaunch: RL is not recommended only because we (RL team) offer support for it and do not offer support for hyperlaunch anymore. Think of RL like you would while choosing between using windows xp and windows 10. Both OSs still exists and do basically the same. You can by all means keep using windows xp for as long as you want, nobody say that you shouldn't, but if you do that you are giving up of important stuff: - Microsoft does not offer you support for it anymore like we do not support hyperlaunch anymore. - You will be giving up of many new features introduced after the old program was made if you keep using the old version. - and mostly important, you will be giving up of years of bug fixes, performance improvements, additional options, and so on, that are crucial to make the frontend game experience the best it can be. Anyway, everybody is free to use whatever they want. I just recommend for everybody that I know to use RL as it is much more powerful than any other alternative available because it is the product of more than five years of constant development and feedback from the biggest experts on emulation that I know of, from many different communities like the HS community. thunder_nemesis Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 In fact I've suggested that if someone has already a completed setup like me, to stay in HL, to the new ones, go with RL without hesitation, bye!
GenChaos Posted May 10, 2016 Author Posted May 10, 2016 I have been working with and configuring just Hyperspin just to get to know the basics. Going right to RocketLauncher seemed overwhelming right off the bat. I will install RL as soon as I get comfortable with Hyperspin. Thank you for your input, fellas.
thunder_nemesis Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 You're welcome :-) ! At the very end I've figured myself how to do adjustements and fixes to the HL + Hyperspin + Xpadder, now all work like a charm! But sometimes there are some problems like controller not recognized (in this case: windows fault , in details xbox wireless receiver fault , was not setting the favorite controller currently on) All those fixes are years of bumping my head on the wall , this is the main reason that I don't want to switch, is , like you correctly said , overwhelming. In my case is also that I've any time to redo all from scratch.
