OpenBOR overhaul / update project

@thatman84 please move to the correct subforum if you feel this doesn't belong here. Thanks!

@tonesmalone @cowbells @shinobi68 @relic OpenBOR is due for a major overhaul, and along with that, an updated database and appropriate artwork/metadata. Many people have already created excellent databases & content.  The goal here is to create a unified & complete OpenBOR experience, including CRC, descriptions, creator, and detailed file naming.

I have been messing around with OpenBOR on the Raspberry Pi. Major advancements have been made to make nearly all games playable on a raspberry pi 3.  You can read about progress on the Raspberry pi over here (tutorial-openbor-the-complete-guide) or here (openbor-6xxx-openbeta-testphase).

On the pi, we were confined to OpenBOR 3400 version. I went through approximately 200 games, seeing which ones worked on OpenBOR v3400. (OpenBOR is very version specific - backwards compatibility is only by chance). @darknior has taking my list a step further by creating a comprehensive list including file size, play status (working, not working, crash logs, and even personal opinions of the game), CRC, aspect ratio, players.     Thankfully, OpenBOR on PC is much easier - especially since each mod comes packaged with correct OpenBOR build.

Since the mods are so version specific, as well as there being many different demo's & versions available, we figured a more informative naming convention would be appropriate:

GAME NAME [v0.0] [build version]

Example:  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Shell Shocked [Rev. 5853][v.3.0 Build 4394]

Many newer mods are missing from any available databases. We would like to choose the best version of each mod worth including.

Darknoir had already started creating metadata, logo's, screen shots, boxart, and video's.  Here's a couple box art created by darknoir

@Circo I would like to recommend an overhaul to OpenBOR. I volunteer to take on the task of auditing & recording videos to your latest standard.  I will post over at emumovies

I also would like to shine the HS Content Creator spotlight in the air to anyone that would be interested. Hyperspin has some of the most talented content creators, and absolutely the most dedicated! Hyperspin, and the talented artists involved created a new era of front end, helping to pave the way for this "retro revolution" we are seeing!  (I entered the arcade scene starting to set up Mame Wah!, when I came across HS beta!)

The spreadsheet created by @darknior can be found here.  Maybe a newer companion spreadsheet could be made for the "latest/ approved" versions that make the final cut, including description, creator, CRC, ratings, and link to Mod's official release page.

Here are the games I have personally gone through, which will painstakingly get a proper rename: pastebin - OpenBOR Games List

Please give your thoughts and interest.  Thank you!

Awesome stuff, think the project is safe here.....the OG's did everything in seperate threads but as your tackling this from multiple angles I see that would be a drag.

Once complete maybe drop single threads in the correct subforum (database, wheel, theme etc)

If you speak to any devs relating OpenBOR I would love to see a build that allows intent launching straight to games instead of the menu.

:)

Good luck and I will keep my eyes open......I doing a similar thing for Amiga.....That will be my main focus for a fair while

Status update:   Got OpenBOR added to ScreenScraper.fe.   I have been going through each mod one by one, trying to fill in as much metadata as possible (most importantly, developer, # of players, and description).  I submitted tons of games to be added to the database (new additions as well as the many different versions/demo's of games).   As a general rule, if the same file is scraped by multiple users, it will be automatically added.  I have been using Skraper to scrape my files.

Right now I am going through the current database and filing in the missing video's. All videos I created I have saved my source capture to later add to EmuMovies.

For any one interested in adding to the database, adding content will unlock additional scraping cores.
