New App!...Hyper Bezel II

Glad you have it going, gotta have that feedback!! :D

I knew the horizontals were'nt not there yet, (perfected) but there are some resized ones on ftp (same names) so download again.

Not sure which ones you resized, I did download again. I also don't think you'd want my bezels, I just slapped together a few very basic ones. I also ended up deleting a lot of the ones you included too, since it was just offputting to fire up say Magic Sword and see a Pac-Man or 'adult themed' bezel, lol.

For example of what I meant though regarding horizontal bezels, this is basically what it looks like in Mame.

Yz861hv.jpg

Any bezels with a top and bottom area get overlapped because the game itself isn't resizing to fit in the bezel area. So I'm only using ones which have side areas.

LOL, those were just for sampling anyway. Better to give to much than not enough when testing!

Concerning that pacman bezel...

If you have Mr do's artwork for packman or puckman...

Run it with Mr Do's artwork in place, look at it!

then remove it (puckman.zip whatever its named) from the artwork folder.

Now make these changes in the settings II.ini file and run pacman again

(temporary for this example)(keep them if you want)

[General]
Vertical_Index_Number=3

[Vertical_Index_3]
Vertical_Lay_File=vertical.lay
Files_In_List=1
1=vertical14.png

See the difference?

If you want to keep that bezel exclusivly for pacman, then zip up the contents of the (packman or puckman) folder and put it in the artwork directory. Then delete that folder so there arent any conflicts with mame.

I dont know the order it looks for things. in .zip first? or folder?

-------------------------------------------------------------

All 4:3 Horizontal bezels were resized to 4000x3000

-------------------------------------------------------------

For example of what I meant though regarding horizontal bezels, this is basically what it looks like in Mame.

Any bezels with a top and bottom area get overlapped because the game itself isn't resizing to fit in the bezel area. So I'm only using ones which have side areas.

Concerning the overlap...

Try the attached files below...

Also make sure while in mame in game for the video options you have 4:3 set?

Here is a new (4x3h) bezel template and a .lay that works pretty well (rename .txt to .lay) both now on ftp.

"template(4x3)Mr.Do.lay"

The .lay was made with Mr.Do's bezel creator.

The bezel I made, "modified" but its really just a template...any artwork can be pasted over it just maintain the playfield area.

I tested this with "csprint" aka "Championship Sprint" and "Street Fighter II Turbo" and its pretty much spot on.

By "pretty much" I mean it could be shrunk on the top side by around 5 pixels and on the bottom side about 3 pixels ...thereabouts lol

With this "template(4x3)Mr.Do.lay" file,

I think 4:3 horizontal games display very well (yes a tweak here and there, maybe)

So now for displaying 4:3 for both Horizontal and Vertical games, the .lay files have been standardised and

Hyper Bezel II does what was promised!

This new .lay file now comes preconfigured with Hyper Bezel II when you download HyperBezel II from FTP.

If you downloaded previously, make sure you have this file in your \mame\artwork\_generic_bezel\horizontal\ folder.

Or you wont see Horizontal Bezels.

On FTP its located in the \Hyper Bezel II\_generic_bezel\horizontal\ folder.

And of course its available here in the attachment (rename .txt to .lay) if you use the attachment.

For widescreen versions, I cant test so you guys will have to let me know what you come up with :)

Enjoy!!!

post #76 artifacts are caused from the wrong .lay file and the 4x3 bezel is being used instead of a widescreen bezel.

http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?23879-New-App!-Hyper-Bezel-II&p=228301&viewfull=1#post228301

I get the same (bad) results on my laptop if the wrong lays and bezels are used for my 1024x768 screen.

My cab is 800x600 and works very well using 4x3 bezels and .lays.

For much better results. here are some sample settings.

change the "horizontal index number" to try different bezel and lay lists.

settings for:

4x3 vertical

4x3 horizontal

16x10 horizontal widescreen

16x9 horizontal widescreen

from my laptop 1024x768

cant get 4x3 pics off my cab for hor and vert but they look really good!

will add settings for vertical widescreens (here) when I get a chance.

And will update the settings II.ini file on ftp so a user wont have to fiddle tooo much "out of the box" :)

My knowledge of .lays is growing in leaps (still no expert).

With that knowledge, I'm able to add support for a few more things in Hyper Bezel II.

I do have a new version of Hyper Bezel II (unreleased atm) that will also display instruction cards and actual "romname" game bezels as well as generic if they dont exist.

(could add more stuff with your input)

Currently...

The problem with displaying "instruction cards" or controls (and im sure Mr.Do can attest) is that in order to display them,

you have to sacrifice game screen real estate to display them properly.

(you cant do this yet, cuz I havent released the new version)

but by hitting "tab" while in mame and selecting "video options" you would be able to see what i mean.

(see attachments below)

Now admittedly, this isnt an ideal way to display them "tab" but its the best I can come up with to change them unless I can find a "keyboard shortcut" in mame to select elements.

Here are some samples...

The standardising of screen views is also not set...this is where i need your input!

And I need standardised bezels so i can adjust the playfields.

Also need your input.

A quick observation for me suggests that if a bezel template has a place (with border maybe) to place an instruction card, it wont cut off part of the bezel and would look more professional, more HyperSpinny. (see attachment, image10.png)

Is anybody even interested in this?

If so...

I need your comments, suggestions guys....

What do you want to see?

How do you want to see It?

There are just so many bezels available for horizontal games but most of the time you have two options. Cropped which shows the whole bezel or full screen which shows none of the bezel. If HyperBezel could somehow give us an option to minimally crop you could have a couple of inches of the original game bezel for effect and the rest for the game. Perhaps this is already possible with HyperBezel?

I had no luck with Mr. Do's software as I suck at working out dimensions and my trial and error didn't yield good results, especially in cases where there is an accompanying instruction card. take Berzerk for example, you have to size the bezel border and then also the placement of the instruction card.

anywyay, even if we couldn't automate something like for Berzerk if we could at least be able to see some border for horizontal games it would rock.

The bezels and .lays I currently have work fairly well. I posted a couple posts up some settings for optimal results for most all screen formats.

Its still not perfect and its not a problem with Hyperbezel II.

The problem is with properly constructed (visually pleasing) bezels and .lays which Im getting better at manipulating.

Im just no artist, so in my templates you'll most likely see some unwanted artifacts lol!

Thats just my poor art skills!

Using the current generation of bezels and .lay files in settings II.ini, a couple posts up....

http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?23879-New-App!-Hyper-Bezel-II&p=228747&viewfull=1#post228747

All the pics I posted are "Horizontal" widescreen 16x9.

They have borders,

They have no cropping.

These pics are also"Horizontal" widescreen 16x9.

They have borders,

They have no cropping.

Except image8, which was intentional to demonstrate how displaying cards would affect game real estate.

These wont be permanant they are just examples to help anyone who cares enough to comment to see what were up against.

I am trying to avoid that and not follow whats avaiable in Mr.Do's artwork.

Its not so much the artwork its the .lay file.

(heavy tweaking for the next release is underway....final when I get standard bezels)

When Im done extracting and re-sizing all available romname bezels to a "standard" agreed upon size from Mr.Do (a big task)...there should still be no cropping.

Unless the majority want to see the instruction card so its readable then the playfield real estate has to be sacrificed aka cropping.

So just for show, I put the instruction card full screen in one example image11.png of what could be done. (HyperCropping lol)

I can resize the elements to anything you guys suggest but I would like to standardise so "one size fits all", which CAN be done with the bezels and .lays.

With a standard matching generic bezel and .lay I can move stuff around "elements" wherever we want it.

With a standard bezel it makes things easier when making a standard .lay file

With Mr.Do bezels, they are what they are and I can have them display properly via .lay file too!

I would just like a consensus as to what people want to see.

I'm interested in this! I think the card looks best on the left side of the bezel.
OK Hunk,

I can make it slighty bigger and sacrifice some horizontal playfield space.

For template or artwork creators...hello, is this thing on?

If anybody IS out there...

keep in mind that a card will cover the artwork on the sidebars which doesnt look all that good atm.

So if art was designed with the card in mind it will look better! Even a window with a border where i can place the cards, like a frame for videos in game themes. would look better.

That particular card has no transparency but I may add transparent corners to them so they look more like Intellivision overlays.

Again I'm no artist lol

I have a standard 4:3 sized arcade monitor so those sized bezels would be most appealing to me and those of us with traditional arcade cabinets. What you are doing is very cool man, it is appreciated.

Is there a way to get the horrizonal bezels working with games such as Metal Slug that only have marquee or card artwork? I didn't see the bezels in the video settings.

Yes but I havent released that version yet.

(post 81) shows that capability.

or if you mean your seeing the metal slug bezel and controls instead of a "generic" bezel...

just remove the MrDo mslug.zip from the artwork directory temporarily.

Hyper Bezel II shuts itself down when it detects Mr.Do Artwork.

It is assumed that if you have it (MrDo Art) installed that you are opting to use it instead of "generic" bezels.

Is there a demo video yet? Just curious.
Sorry Not yet...I dont have the tech (video recording capability) on my cab. Would love it if somone posted one though :D

Thank You Pandem and Sandman!!!

Ah ok thanks man! Looking forward to that version :)
What Im waiting for is "standardised" generic bezel templates. (more feedback)

The samples i posted (post 81) were just that.... samples.

They dont look as good as they could if you or other artists agreed on what you want to see i.e. "cards" and how best to see them.

(a how big and where exactly to place them, standard)

Once generic bezel templates are created by artists which has somthing like a video border for the card,

then I can move and size the cards to that location and make them shine and finalise the Upcoming HBII.

As they are currently... the cards pasted over the bezel via .lay in the sample,

IMHO, just arent that appealing especially without a generic bezel built with them (cards) in mind i.e. (post 81 image10) but they are better than nothing!

The tedious part will be extracting all cards (and hint....some control strips) from the MrDo zips, while maintaining the romnames for HBII to work with.

I also have (2) projects that are going to take priority for a few weeks (personal and HS related) that will slow me down a bit :D

I can understand that man! I don't know anything about creating bezels. I would be more than happy to give it a try. I think I mentioned before that I would love to see something like this http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=267709&page=2&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&vc=1 That link has since been dead though and I've tried a few times to get the OP to re-upload but he never did. The card idea is cool. For me I think the card would look best on the left side of the bezel.

It'll get there Hunk lol. Ive seen that post before ages ago hated that it was dead but since was a sort of inspiration for me to mak HBII lol

And just to give thanks where thanks are do....

I got some of the bezels to use in HBII from roadrunner and just rediscoverd this thread.

Havent used GameEx in a while so...

While this is the Hyper Bezel II commandline when using HyperLaunch...

run, C:\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe %systemname% %Rom%

in GameEx it might look like this Example, For Mame, Using 'Advanced Mame Settings 'Run on Launch' (Launch Before)

"C:\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" "MAME Games" "[Rom]"

and in the 'Run on Exit' (Launch After) to clean up the artwork folder from Hyper Bezel II's handiwork...

"C:\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" "Mame Games" "[Rom]" kill

[edit]

Cant remember exactly for GameEx but you may not need the "quotes" around mame and rom...

"C:\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" Mame Games [Rom]

and\or you may not need the brackets around [rom]

"C:\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" Mame Games Rom

Posted

Thanks got it working using:

Launch Before: "C:\Hyperspin\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" MAME [Rom]

Launch After: "C:\Hyperspin\Hyper Bezel II\Hyper Bezel II.exe" MAME [Rom] kill
