Hard Drive Problem

AARrrrrhhhhhhgggggg NNNOOOOOoooooooooooooo, yes thats the short version of what I said last night.

I need some advise / help please, Last night after finishing the artwork for a wheel I clicked on the shortcut for HS but it couldn't find it (my head started to drop) then as I thought the drive was missing (see above comment) So I restarted and it was back so I quickly formatted a spare USB drive and started backing up I managed to get the whole HS folder, every system roms apart from the mame ones (alittle bit more AARrrhhggging) but the Rocketlauncher folder I cant get all of it I have the top 3 folders then from media down I cant get, but after the folders I got the small files after if that makes sense!!

The drive shows in windows I can click on it and it displays the folders but then hangs and makes a sort of clicking noise. Does anyone know of a way I can get the content back or have I lost 6 months of work. I'm happy to open the drive if I have to as a last resort.

Thanks

Sounds pretty bad yes! Backup, backup, backup :( I need to learn that myself.

I however have been able to recover a lot from hard drives with the same characteristics with different methods.

One HDD I was able to recover by putting it in an external USB HDD case and turning the drive sideways or upside down. Another time I used a recovery program and let it run for like 4 days to complete, a lot of the files where corrupted, but a lot wheren't and at least I could then see what files where supposed to be where.

Another method I read about was someone that had the HDD in the freezer to get it to run, but I haven't tried it myself and it sounds a bit unsafe imho.

Hope you get what you need out of it.

i had this happen to one of my older drives like you said i got most of the stuff of the drive but most of it was corrupted after that

when will technology be advanced enough for data storage that will last for eternity

im surprised the world doesnt come crashing down with how much stuff depends on technology and hard drives go out allll the time

Never had a hard drive die on me but reading this stuff really scares me. The problem is I haven't found a way to back things up. What do you guys use? Just making a copy means I need another hard drive just as big and that's expensive. I do have Acronis Backup software. Would anyone recommend that or even Easeus Todo Backup Free? I made a backup of Windows with Acronis and it reduced it from 100GB down to 25GB. Not sure if it would give me the same results with roms and ISO files.

Has anyone ever opened one up and tried to fix it? I'm at work now but been thinking all day about how much effort there will be to get to the same place I was  :notfair:

Backblaze is what I use for back up. It's cheap and unlimited for all drives attached to a machine.

What exactly have you lost? I'm sure between us all here we could get you sorted. I've got no problems sharing my RL folder or anything else you might need :) Just blast over a PM with what you need to get you up and running.

As for the drive - it's most certainly a mechanical problem given the clicking. To recover the data you'd need to swap the data platters in to a working unit of the same make and model. This while not particularly difficult, does require precision and should be done in a clean room.

Needing a clean room is just one of many issues you will run into if you open that drive. 6 months of work isn't really worth paying to have it recovered either. Start getting into years of work like many of us and you would be willing to shell out thousands to save it Haha. However I'm a little shocked by people not doing backups. I will admit 6 months into using hyperspin I wouldnt be at the point of backing any of it up either so I would have been in the same boat as you. Everyone else though... Anything that is important to you on a computer needs to be backed up. Harddrives fail, it happens. I use crash plan to back up everything. I also have a 14tb backup server that also backs up all my computers as well as the operating system drives. That puppy also has software that scans its own drives plus all other drives in the network to let me know if anything is showing signs of failing. I recently had a drive start to go... You just pop a new drive in, restore from the server, and in a couple hours you are back online. Harddrives are cheap so its worth it for peace of mind.

Yeah...the question isn't IF a harddrive will brake, it's WHEN it will brake...make backups!

I'm sorry for your loss. I wouldn't open the drive If I were you. Like others said in this topic, you need a clean room if you ever do that and secondly the inner chamber is a vacuum. If you haven't got a clean room and/or a way to make the vacuum afterwards you end up making it worse. The clicking noise could be caused by a faulty pcb. Depending on the age of the drive this can be replaced with another pcb of the same model & type. Here's a video with more info on how to replace your pcb.

Just to hammer the point home, as others have said, you should always keep everything backed up. Not just your Hyperspin stuff either, everything that can't simply be replaced, redownloaded or reinstalled. I use Goodsync which automatically syncs selected folders on my rig to an external drive in a Synology NAS. I also backup certain things by burning them to DVD's just to be extra anal. You don't have to go the NAS route but you should at least have some sort of external drive to use for backup storage.

I feel your pain, I had a full 5tb and probably spent few hundred hours on that setup and it crashed on me.

Here's an update it seems the drive has a part that can not be read at all, so I have got as much as possible off of it. I even managed to get all my MAME roms bar 7 which I'm really happy about.

What I really need help with is the rocketlauncher folder, here is what I managed to get:-

rocketlauncher.jpg

Is there a way I can add someone else's files in here and then edit the setting to suit how I had it before?

I'm uploading my RL folder for you now.  Will PM a link to it once it's uploaded.

Once you have it - open RLUI and configure to your needs, remembering to make sure paths to HyperSpin, roms and emulators are set correctly.  I'd also force RLUI to do an update, as I'm leaving out the media folder as it's too large.  Doing an update will pull down the default media.

It shouldn't take you too long to get things sorted.  I've got all HyperList systems setup, so you should just have to make changes to suit your particular setup.  Also I use a 360 controller - so if you use a different controller you will need to setup that again too.

A statement from several years ago compared the job performed by the read\write head on a hard drive to flying a 747 airplane 0.14mm above the ground. That being said, I am picturing a guy willing to crack open his hard drive rather than start over with RocketLauncher. God I hope his roms are OK after all because of all the bad karma I got coming my way for how much I enjoyed this thread. Sorry, but I've had data loss also. You have to back up.
