guyverjay Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 We can agree that what's crap to someone may not be crap to others.... Thanks for the insight professor
damageinc86 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I haven't ever axed any systems because I started with the original list from the hyperspin download. I only ever added custom entries to my ms-dos wheel of games i played as a kid, a PC Games wheel, homebrew wheels, a DS wheel, a Wii wheel with like 15 games, and wiiware with a huge set. That might be the only one I pare down to a best of list but just haven't messed with yet. I don't think i've touched the atari systems, neo geo pocket, turbografx systems or the 3do. But with Terabytes at our disposal, it's not really that big of a deal to leave them there.
rastan Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 Took off all the system classics except CAPCOM, SNK, and MIDWAY... the rest I can just play and enjoy on my mame wheel. I like where it's going for me because I my goal is for a more ARCADE feel and those consoles that I actually owned and have those memories for me. by the way thanks to a lot of you guys that POST on these forums because I learned a great deal by just hanging around this place in the short time that I've been here.
rastan Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 Certain systems definitely have to be for memories because having both NEO POCKET and NEO GEO and or GENESIS and GAME GEAR just seem weird to me (i figure if you got NEO GEO or GENESIS you shouldn't really need the handheld versions) but if they have system only games in the those systems... I can understand it. I watched on youtube video and some guy had SEGA PICO? a system I barely even remembered and it seemed like something for children... I was just kept shaking my head like why does this dude even have this system.... hopefully it was for his kids.
rastan Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 The mario kart on gba is great too I think I will revisit GBA and just do a best of or just weed out the stuff I actually like.... the MARIO BROS was really good... the same but had a new twist to it which wasn't bad. I think I just got sick of looking at 1000+ GBA games and never really playing any of them.
damageinc86 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Yeah it would be nice if there was a definitive list of exclusive games for handhelds or consoles like you said. I have no idea what's what, so i just leave it all. But for the handhelds that have better graphical counterparts, game gear vs. genesis or something, that would totally make sense. I know between SNES and Genesis there are a lot of differences even in the same games. I took out most neo geo cd games because a lot were exact copies of just neo geo games, which were already in my neo geo arcade wheel.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out why people kept NEO GEO and NEO GEO CD... I understand or at least I believe the music was better on the CD games and LMAO you got to watch a juggling monkey.. I do remember people talking about one game on NEO GEO CD was rare or better than the NEO GEO cart version but I can't remember which one and emulation wise there really is no such thing as a RARE game (as long as it's actually being emulated)..now having the actual Cart or CD that's another thing. if I'm not mistaken one of them sold for cheaper but I can't remember if it was the CDs or the CARTS?

Undertow76 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I cut out Nintendo DS, as the control is sketchy on it, and it's better emulated on android in my opinion. I also cut out Gamecube and Nintendo Wii because you can just mod it and play everything from it off the HDD. That saved me a ton of space. I will however put some Wiiware games on the wheel, because they had a hand full of good ones! I also pruned a bunch of PC games with bad control schemes aka, point and click kinda stuff out!

I had a choice on whether to play Skyward Sword on the console or Dolphin, I chose Dolphin because it looked so much better, but some games just work better on the original machine. So if a game works well on Dolphin I'll play it there if not then off the Modded Wii.
Avar Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I break my setup down into 4 distinct sets: Completionist = Every system even remotely supported, even if rocket launcher doesn't have it working yet and there isn't any art for it. Alphabetical order. Enthusiast = Every system that is actually playable, even if the artwork isn't compelte for it. Chronological order based on system release date. Perfectionist = Every system that is playable and has (subjectively) complete enough art that it isn't aesthetically displeasing to browse. Chronological order based on system release date. Exhibitionist = Only the systems that work and look bloody pristine (ie. the setup if you want to show off). Chronological order based on system release date. This lets me have my cake and eat it too in that I don't have to always slog through crap to get to the system I want, even though I will never not have a system or game if I can help it. I even recently manually verified all of my famicom and super famicom games were translated and working that could be. I'm an archivist/preservationist at heart.
pofo14 Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 This thread just saved me thousands of dollars of therapy. I am redoing my setup now and looking to trim the fat a bit as well. My system is going to focus on ARCADE with one MAME wheel and the console systems that I remember which is essentially Atari 2600 through N64/Saturn. Obscure things like Sega CD and 32x will make the cut just for the few games I remember from them. As was stated storage is cheap so I am not deleting anything but I do want to spend less time tinkering and more time playing. I want trim down so I can say it's "done" and then maybe spend a few hours when I have time tinkering with a potential new system to add. Where do you guys get your "best of" lists. I am looking for a good source of that info.
Styphelus Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Nintendo DS..crap??? Lol what are you smoking, I want some too The Nintendo DS requires 2 screens, one on top of the other. That means that my main playing screen is tiny and I don't like anything tiny. Even my Gameboy and Game gear screens are big. The DS is a fraction of the size and for that reason I never play that system and don't plan on playing it ever.
Styphelus Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 the PSP versions don't seem to work.. I think I have Crazy Taxi for dreamcast.. not sure if it's working but will be checking for the PC versions. The Dreamcast version and the Naomi version both work perfectly fine on my setup. They should run on yours as well.

Which would have had a smaller screen than your 23" monitor or 55" oled.

I am looking for a good source of that info. For my best of list, I went by sales figures. I know it isn't perfect but I used this as I figured most people asking to play a game would be included in the mass of sales of the top 50 games or so. I have around 20 systems setup and this allowed me to have mostly everything I wanted from Atari to PS2, all on a 1TB hard drive. This is what I used for a best of list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

The control definitely turned me off with the DS.. I believe the DS had a touch screen and even tho you could map stuff to get that working... it doesn't feel right to me.
rastan Posted December 9, 2015 Author Posted December 9, 2015 The advice given earlier about using multiple main menu.xml's is the route I may go. I must admit that I also like to archive stuff just to have the history of it so it would be nice to have all those systems even the obscure one's if they are 100% working and I can find all the art work for them (and even if I can't find the art work, etc). As for my main HS setup.. I just want the KICK ASS stuff... the ARCADES of course.. and the consoles that are loved by all.
ninja2bceen Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I don't work for Romano but I did test hyperxmlspin. It has an awake some export feature to the main menu. You have to donate 10 bucks to get it though. Anyhow I'm going to make a top 100 game list of al time or maybe more sometime soon. Someone asked how to get the best games. This is how I'll do it Tapatalk signature Advance the cause to 100%. http://hyperbase.hyperspin-fe.com/ Planet Geekdom, Subscribe for Tutorials! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdcby-s2GwriaOHGmVC2vGA?sub_confirmation=1&app=desktop
rastan Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 wow, going back and listing my systems by release date (doing the research) I found that the way I remembered the systems was way of in a few cases.. like for some reason (I guess being in the USA) I remember NES from around 1985... but it was released in 1983... then I remembered the ATARI 7800 being released much earlier but it was actually released after the NES... also the TurboGrapx 16 was released in 1987 but I remember it from 1989... obviously Japan releases came earlier and if I could go back to those days.. we were always in the know about new stuff being released overseas but it just seems weird when you go by what you actually remember and then you see the facts..., it's just blows the mind a little.
Styphelus Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 The NES was released in the USA on October 18, 1985. The Nintendo Famicom was released in Japan on July 15, 1983. Also, TurboGrafx was not released in the USA until August 29, 1989. The PC Engine was released in Japan on October 30, 1987. While they may share the same bones, they are not exactly the same system. They look completely different and play different games, Some games might be the same but there were lot of exclusives depending on the region.

Avar Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 For the people disliking DS controls/emu: https://gbatemp.net/threads/3ds-controller.375443/ I haven't done this yet but I grabbed a 3DS XL specifically for this purpose and will advise if successful when I get around to it. This will be especially awesome once they get screen streaming up and running. The same is possible for PSP and VITA, for people wanting to maximize the authenticity of their gameplay. I personally goddamn hate the DS/3DS design, find it gimmicky/annoying/immersion killing, especially when emulated with the exception of games that use both screens simultaneously as an extended image with the bar in the middle removed, but being able to have 100% accurate emulation down to the handheld itself is worth it imo.
