DESCRIPTION OF GAUNTLET

MobyGames entry says it all about one of the most celebrated arcade games of all time:

Gauntlet, the original arcade smash hit, is fighting game where you choose a character a let rip into the hordes of enemies that assault you on you way to the end of the level. It featured a choice of four characters to play with, each with different weapons. Thor the Warrior, with his bludgeoning battle axe. Thyra the Valkyrie, with her close range sword. Questor the Elf, with his long range bow. And Merlin the Wizard with his magical bolts.

You (and another player) must make your way through 100 levels of mayhem and magic. Ghosts, goblins and even the life draining Death are your enemies. They stream out of generators. Destroy the generators first before tackling the rest. Find keys to help you progress to the exit. Battle your way past ghosts, ghouls and a wide variety of evil monsters using magic and potions, as you desperately try to escape before your health runs out.

Look for scattered magic potions. These act like smart bombs and clear the screen of all enemies. Beware of poison though. Treasure is abundant throughout the levels and adds to your score. [This download] is a faithful conversion of the classic multi-player arcade hit. Both graphics and sound here are delightful and once you get into this game, many, many hours can be lost!

Definitely one of the best multiplayer games ever made, and a great action/RPG combination that is a must-have for ever arcade fan's collection. Highly recommended!

DESCRIPTION OF BRUCE LEE

One of the first semi-realistic side-scrollers for PC. MobyGames has the scoop on this martial arts classic:

Bruce Lee is a decent platform game with a lot of action thrown in. Reflexes are needed to pass certain sections, as is a lot of timing to jump past obstacles. You're pursued by two enemies, who unrelentlessly come after you, snapping at your heels.

It's very fun for anyone who likes platform games. There is no "easy" mode to help novice gamers get used to the game. Also, fighting the enemies is relatively easy and just gets irritating after a while.

Finally, Bruce Lee only runs at the correct speed on a 4.77MHz PC. Well, one more gripe, actually--you're Bruce Lee, yet you only have two moves, punching and a flying kick. A little disappointing from a master of martial arts. If you love platform games that require good reflexes and timing, Bruce Lee fits the bill."

The game also features a great range of movement and attacks that makes games such as Bushido simplistic in comparison. Two thumbs up!

Note: If you like the game, also check out Mark Rosten's amazing 2001 remake of the 16-color Commodore 64 version.

DESCRIPTION OF SHINOBI

SEGA's popular side-scrolling arcade game converted to the IBM-PC. You slip into the role of Jo-Musashi, a modern ninja who's off to rescue hostages and to kill everything on screen with your shuriken and sword.

The PC version of Shinobi has very poor graphics compared to the original arcade game (duh) and suffers from worse playability, but it's a decent action game for PC standards of that time. The controls in the game are easy to use. One key for attacking, one for jumping, another for ninja magic, etc. There is no time limit in the game, so you can take your time to eliminate one enemy at a time. Hostages are spread out through each level. As they are rescued, Jo-Musashi will have his life meter replenished.

Bonus stages, which become available at the end of a level if enough hostages are rescued, are the most difficult part of the game but also arguably the most fun. You view a close platform and a distant one from a first-person perspective. You must throw shurikens at enemy ninjas in an attempt to keep them from reaching the front of the screen. If one of them gets close enough, the stage ends and you don't receive any ninja magic.

Shinobi is not a hard game, but it is not too easy either. Although the level bosses are definitely too simple to defeat, some of the later levels will require precise timing and inhuman reflexes. Overall, Shinobi isn't as varied or atmospheric as the best ninja platformers (e.g. Ninja Gaiden 2 on the consoles), but it does offer more than a few hours of fun gameplay, and the addictive and original bonus levels are well worth playing for. Thumbs up!

DESCRIPTION OF TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a boring game based on Terminator 2 the movie. In all respects, it is a formulaic film license material, i.e. a series of sub-games, each based on a certain scene from the film.

The first beat-'em-up section -- a battle between the old and the new Terminator in a corridor-- is downright abysmal. Instead of feeling like the powerful battle that it should, you just poke or fire weapon leisurely at your opponent, causing damage little by little before he falls. The enemy Terminator advances ever-so-slowly towards you with a tinny growl that sounds more like a broken PC speaker than a menacing killer android, making no effort whatsoever to evade your fire.

After the slow-motion, beat'-em-up "action" of the first level, this game improves slightly with a racing section. You race a moped and see the level from the top-down perspective, trying to outrun the Terminator's truck and avoid obstacles. Unfortunately, after this high point of the game, it goes back to mediocrity again with tediously moving pieces of an ostentacious "puzzle" section.

The bottom line: play any one of Bethesda's Terminator game instead... indeed, play any game at all other than this utter waste of a good film license.

DESCRIPTION OF TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MANHATTAN MISSIONS

One of the best superheroes action games ever made, Manhattan Missions is the third game in Konami's line of platform games based on the lucrative license.

The third time is really a charm for this game, as the Turtles finally come to life in colorful graphics and a good number of special moves that are unique to each Turtle. There are a lot of enemies and cool power-ups, and great options such as the ability to choose which locale to battle next, and a training mode in which you can practice each Turtle's moves against different enemies. Although most missions occur indoors at various locations in Manhattan, New York, they are quite different from each other, and you will also have a chance to battle in exciting locations such as aboard a subway train, or in the sewers.

Konami finally did the license justice with this game-- a must have for all TMNT and action fans alike. Two thumbs up!

DESCRIPTION OF CASTLEVANIA

First in a hit series that is still going strong on the Nintendo 64, Castlevania is the first and only entry that was ported to the PC. The plot is standard kill-the-Dracula fare, but what the game lacks in plot innovation, it makes up for in spades in the sheer playability, ingenious level design, and a LOT of great atmosphere. Although the graphics in this PC version is far inferior to the NES classic, and the wonderfully eerie music is missing, the wonderful level design and very addictive gameplay are still here to glue PC gamers to the screen for hours on end. While most other platform games feature "typical" weapons such as the rifle, and standard go-to-the-right-forever-and-climb-some-ladders level design, Castlevania gives you a cool Indiana Jones-style whip that is useful for more than plain monster-kiling. The levels are very expansive, and navigable in more than one direction: sometimes you will be walking left, then up the ladder, then over the chasm (using your trusty whip to swing from ceiling hooks), then to the right, then inside the doors and so on. This makes navigating the levels very "realistic" -- the first three levels comprise one castle, then you are tossed into the dungeons, from where you finally emerge to enter the second castle, where you are greeted by Frankenstein himself at the entrance. In addition to great level design that is never repetitive, another hallmark of Castlevania is the numerous famous undead who stand in your way, each with his (its?) own attack style. As end-level bosses, they are extremely difficult to defeat. Frankenstein, for example, is not only very tough, but comes with his helper, little Igor who jumps around throwing fireballs at you. Dracula himself is one of the toughest bosses you'll ever find in an action game, and it'll take you a good part of the hour (if not days) to defeat him.

All in all, Castlevania is simply a must-have for every action gamer. The lack of NES' graphics and great soundtrack is more than made up for by the brilliant gameplay. Just make sure you have a high tolerance for frustration, because you'll definitely need it. This is a game that inspired countless clones and spawned numerous sequels, although none of them was ported to the PC. Highly recommended!

Vampire Killer to Castlevania MSX2 patch hqdefault.jpg

DESCRIPTION OF VAMPIRE KILLER

Vampire Killer (known as Akumajō Dracula in Japan) is the second game in the series and the only one released for the MSX2 home computer. It was released in Japan on October 10, 1986 roughly one month after Castlevania appeared on the Famicom Disk System. It is a remake of the original game, but key gameplay differences emphasize exploration and puzzle elements rather than straightforward action.

"Tonight fear won't sleep."

DESCRIPTION OF SUPER CONTRA

The second and unfortunately last in Konami's widely acclaimed Contra series that were translated to the PC, Super Cretains the addictive gameplay of the original while introducing more challenges and new surprises.

To those unfamiliar with the original, the Contra series is basically Rambo incarnated: there's plenty of two player side-scrolling action, and lots shoot-everything-in-sight opportunities. You are given only three lives per player, and a handful of continues before you must start the game from scratch. Remember Red Falcon? You though your destroyed his heart at the end of Contra, but he's back, and tougher than ever. Instead of landing on a crappy little remote island, he's decided to mount a full fledged attack... right on the military bases on the planet. The only commandos left are Lance and Scorpian, so its off to duty!

Super C plays a lot like its predecessor, with plenty of weapons that can be collected, with the same aiming and jumping controls. The game lacks the ability to aim diagonally while standing still, or a good jumping control, but these inconveniences are minor. As the game progresses, its obvious how the motifs of each level changes... at first human and militaristic, later hideous and very alien.

The best enhancement in Super C is the removal of those hidden, behind-the-back areas. Instead, there are two overhead levels, much like Commando. This makes navigation much easier. The flamethrower has been made more powerful (it shoots flame balls that burst on contact with a surface). The best improvement is that the game as a whole seems much less frustrating. It's still difficult, but many of the unfair deaths in Contra aren't here any more. This is no cakewalk, though: the bosses are still tough, and very huge. Even the though the changes seem subtle,

Super C is a better game than the already solid original. A must-have for all Contra fans, especially those who felt that the final boss in Contra was too easy to beat. Thumbs up!

DESCRIPTION OF NINJA GAIDEN II: THE DARK SWORD OF CHAOS

A much better conversion of arcade hit than the original Ninja Gaiden for PC, Ninja Gaiden 2 opens with a great musical theme accompanying a cinematic scene. You learn that Jaquio, the evil crimelord you defeated at the end of the first game, is a mere stool pigeon for Ashtar, an evil lord who has an even bigger castle than Jaquio, and more sinister eagles. And of course, to motivate you to storm his stronghold, he has captured your girlfriend, the heart of whom you won at the end of Ninja Gaiden 1. So what is there to do except trusting the Dragon Sword once more... Ninja Gaiden 2 boasts a few new gameplay features in addition to sharper, VGA graphics and smoother animations. First of all, you can amass up to two clones of Ryu who mimic his every move and attack. These doppeldangers amount to tripling your attack power, and are a lot of fun to watch in action... try somersaulting around the screen and quickly rolling back and forth for a nice little circus show :) Secondly, you can finally climb all over the walls without having to snap your controller back and forth. This makes Ryu a bit more like Spiderman than a true ninja, but it does help him attack the enemies from improbable positions that are sometimes impregnable. Finally, the stages now feature some great graphical effects for the background, including moving trains, snow storms, etc. One thing that hasn't changed, though, is the fact eagles can still hurt you more than a 20-mm artillery shell fired one inch away from your face. The game overall is not as frustratingly difficult as the first game, though, which means action newbies will be able to actually enjoy playing the game (as opposed to seeing death scene every 2 minutes). With improved graphics and interface, many hidden surprises (including bonus levels), and a great storyline, Ninja Gaiden 2 comes very close to the arcade and Nintendo classic in the addiction quotient. Thumbs up!
