MADrigal Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Hi all I am currently in the process of upgrading all of my 59 "Game & Watch/Handheld Simulators" by adding a ton of new features, in an attempt to make them fully compatible with Hyperspin and arcade-cabinet UIs in general. Some of you may know my project, which I started in 1999: http://www.madrigaldesign.it/sim/ The games have been upgraded numerous times, but this will (hopefully) be the ultimate update and then I hope that the community finds their ways to improve them further. With this update, every game will have its graphics based on a fully customisable "skin" system. If the users find the graphics too small, too big, too dark, too light, or it does not simply fit their desktops or interfaces, well they will have the power to change everything as they please. Technically, the entire game graphics can be replaced, e.g. make a "modern" look out of an old black&white LCD game, replace characters, etc. What's new: - games can be launched in fullscreen or windowed mode (previously that was windowed mode only) - skin-based gfx - skins include support for 24-bit alpha blended PNG images - wallpaper/background included for use with the fullscreen mode (can be changed at will) - my logo included as a "watermark" appearing in fullscreen mode (you can use your own logo, or Hyperspin, or whatever you want) - new "onscreen" menu available in the fullscreen mode (sandwich icon to-left corner of screen) - all keys can now be configured - the splash screen can be removed permanently (the application boots in "game" mode straight away) - you can play the game by using the mouse to press buttons (that is: fully compatible with touch-screens!) - obvious bug fixes and improvements to the source codes - bigger (48x48 px) application icon - included instructions manual scans are also part of the skin (you can replace them at will) Licensing: * The executables attached in this thread are PRIVATE BETA VERSIONS, only available to the Hyperspin community. It is OK to download and enjoy them as long as you do not re-distribute the archives in any public form. Just please get them, install them into your PC/cabinet and keep them there. Thank you * To date, 9 games only have been converted (2 months to achieve this!) and there are 50 to go. I believe I will be finished by Christmas this year. Until then, the games will be marked as "beta private version". Then they will be released to the public all together. How to help: * I am aware I am a decent graphics artist, but definitely not the best around! I truly hope that some good artist could get in touch with me and offers his help by creating nice wallpapers for my games. If anyone there is available, please get in touch! * Beta testing: everyone is welcome to test the games and submit their comments. Please note the "standard" has been set so I am not willing to add any more features than the ones listed above (unless something really easy and feasible). Just keep in mind the games are 59 so it will take months and months for me to upgrade them all. I am currently focussed on adding the above listed features and there is not really much space for further additions. But I am into fixing bugs, definitely! Downloads See screenshots and links below. The list will be updated regularly.

gigapig Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 I was just looking at images of the game, it really is a lovely clamshell. The US boxart is cool too.

I totally agree, I love it! If I could find a way to use it as a wallpaper for the game, that would be great! But I need a scan at fullHD resolution of the box, which I haven't
phantasy Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 I haven't updated /upgraded your collection in a while but just did. Before trying any out, again a huge thank you MADrigal!! The offer will always be there to donate games like Electronic Detective or the tabletop D&D dungeon game: LINK LINK For the Electronic Detective game, I would create an HD 24bit FLAC file of the flexi-record too! I know you said you are stopping making these but should you ever change your mind...

As said, I am too focussed on upgrading these games, not really willing to start any new projects until this one is done! FYI D&D tabletop electronic game is currently emulated through MAME
phantasy Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 I know, I know! I only tease about it every so often as my way of reminding you your work is so amazing! You've been at it for ages- no one can blame you for not doing new ones. Many thanks!!

That's lovely but too small and it would require huge effort to repair the photo and upscale it to fullhd. Furthermore, part of the artwork is covered by the game (bottom-right corner) making it an even more difficult task

When you get tron done I will have that straight away The plan is to proceed 'by manufacturers'. Once I am done with Coleco (Donkey Kong tabletop only is left), I will do the Mattel games (Armor Battle, Sub Chase and D&D) and then Tomy (Tron and Pacman). I will leave the VTech games as the last because they are very numerous (more than 20).
jackhammersalm Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 ok when you have done these are you planning to expand on the 59 handhelds you have done already. you are missing a track and field handheld, Think tandy ? radio shack called it track star The Hyperspin Report writer/editor
resident grouch, Hyperspin facebook modorator
for those who want to read my work
http://thehyperspinreport.blogspot.co.uk

I may consider adding a couple of games to the collection, but I have made my choice of games already and sorry that is not Track & Field. But it won't be in 2017 for sure, maybe not even in 2018.
jackhammersalm Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 fair enough. 59 is a large number of individual games. MADrigal Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 I hope you like this one: "Donkey Kong" (Coleco), tabletop Sorry this one took a little longer than expected. This is due to the fact that I added a "glow" effect to the sprites, to replicate the lightness of the VFD display. Unfortunately the sprites are still very small, so this "glare" effect is very barely noticeable. Too much effort for such a little improvement. This "glare" effect will definitely look way better in Tron and Pacman by Tomy (to be released soon). Download: DKongC_S5-104beta.zip
MADrigal Posted July 16, 2017 Author Posted July 16, 2017 Mattel Electronics games: Armor Battle (LED game) Sub Chase (LED game) Dungeons & Dragons Computer Fantasy Game (Action Arcade Series) Download links: ArmorBtl_S5-104beta.zip SubChase_S5-103beta.zip Dnd_S5-104beta.zip Screenshots:
MADrigal Posted July 21, 2017 Author Posted July 21, 2017 And there we go with the TOMY tabletops! This task was quite demanding as I decided to add the "glowing" effect to the game screen. The display now looks extremely realistic, I am very happy with the result! I am not 100% happy with the Pacman backdrop. This is the "best" one I could find on the Internet. I would appreciate if someone could provide a better artwork/backdrop for that game. Pacman (Tomytronic tabletop) Tron (Tomytronic tabletop) Message for jackhammersalm: get in touch with me via PM please! PacManT_S5-205beta.zip Tron_S5-105beta.zip
gigapig Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 No Way!! That's the Pac man I had although is was called "Munchman" in the UK. Good to see it again and of course play it.
bdove67 Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 Thank you very much for these updated versions of your work. They look and play great. I look forward to seeing the rest of these.
