MAME Artwork Bezel Project

Idk if this is what u mean.

Yes that's perfect.

Firstly I see that your set up is out of date, your on 3.0.0.9 and the latest beta version is 3.1.0.0, which kind of makes it tricky to recommend you upgrade, it being in beta right now.

Anyway it looks like you don't have any bezel media or you don't have it in the correct place.

Your bezel media should be in :\HyperSpin\HyperLaunch\Media\Bezels\MAME

Yours are in or it's looking in...

post-75779-142870664411_thumb.jpgThank you for looking into that log. I was putting them in hyperspin\hyperlaunch\Media\MAME instead of Hyperspin\Media\Bezels\MAME. Now it's working!

Hi Ash

I see you've upgraded, open the Global Hyperlaunch.ini and find the bezel section, change the IC enabled to true. Seems that it's not doing it from within HLHQ. Let me know if it works.

Thanks to this thread for the help. http://www.hyperlaunch.net/forum/showthread.php?314-problem-in-Instruction-Cards&p=3482#post3482

Im just about to start looking into bezel's for mame. Sorry what are the differences between normal and layout?

I was hoping i could just download the mame extras and then enable bezels. I'm guessing it's not that simple?

Normal uses HL bezels and layout uses those MAME extras ones

Until very recently bezels were a suckit and see. Bezels were only available in certain emulators and HL didn't support both MAME types simultaneously - a few of us converted those layout bezels to regular HL bezels and others have created many more. You've come to use bezels at a much more emulator supported time ;-)

Mame Artwork Bezel Project

In early February 2014, myself and potts43 discussed Mame bezels and specifically using the Mame artwork at the same time as user/Hyperlaunch bezel media.

Mame artwork is currently used when the bezel setting is set to Layout and user/Hyperlaunch bezel media is used when Normal is selected. We discussed getting both working at the same time and tried many ways, but found it couldn’t be done, at least at the time.

So we decided to convert all the Mame artwork from the Mame artwork folder to work in Normal mode. Not every game has artwork, the final count being 861, but as we progressed we started to add instruction cards and also create custom bezels where there where none to start with.

Potts43 then came up with an ingenious way of switching to full screen at the touch of a button, the same button also cycles through each bezel if more than one is present.

Later Potts took a break from the project and in stepped rfancella to help finish it, and boy did he fly through them and made it possible to release it far sooner than I thought.

Here's some examples.

The project can be found on the ftp in /Upload Here/_MAME Artwork Bezel Project and the complete set weighs in at around 5 Gigabytes

So what do you do with this mass of artwork? The folders should be placed in your “:\HyperLaunch\Media\Bezels\MAME” folder, if you already have artwork in there you can choose to add them or not, but the artwork you have already; will still be usable.

There are 2 sets of optional files that can be added. “Background - 16x9 black 19201080 (Potts43).png” which can be found with the project folders in "_Default" or as part of the script written by rfancella. Also “Bezel - 16x9 transp 19201080 (Potts43).png" & “Bezel - 16x9 transp 19201080 (Potts43).ini” this is also included in another script written by Ron, but I will leave him to explain what they are and what to do with them.

Here is the folder structure.

To set this up first open Hyperlaunch HQ and select Mame from the left pane (1), click the settings tab (2) and then the Bezel tab (3). Look to the bezel section and set Enabled to True (4), next section to look at is “Bezel Change Keys”. (5)

To be able to change the bezels and also go full screen if required, you need to assign a “Next Bezel” key, so go ahead and set that.

Next click Global on the left pane or if you need these settings just for Mame stay in Mame(6), click the Instruction cards tab (7).

Look at General Settings, Positions (8). Click the “List options Edit” button (9).

If you haven’t added these positions, you need to move them to the left Hand Side using the left arrow (10).

Move the following.

Top Center

Bottom Center

Left Center

Right Center

You can add more if you plan on having IC’s in other positions, but they won’t be needed for this set.

Now if they are out of order, use the blue arrow keys to put them in order (11).

Close that window.

Now look at the scale factor. You need to set this to “1” so type that in the box (12).

You can now set a Visibility key if required; this key will quickly remove all IC’s from the screen (13).

Next up is the “key Change Mode 3”, these keys will cycle the 4 positions for our IC’s.

I have only set 4 keys as this is enough, but you can set the “Previous Key” as well.

N.B. The keys I have set are just examples; some of you will be using arcade buttons to cycle through the artwork, others may be using game pads.

So I have set ”IC 1 to IC 4 Next” keys (14).

IC1 is leftCenter Position.

IC2 is rightCenter Position.

IC3 is topCenter Position.

IC4 is bottomCenter Position.

Finally we need to set the correct Bezel mode.

On the left pane select Mame (15)

Choose the Modules tab (16)

Highlight Mame.ahk (17)

Hit the Edit Global Module settings (18)

Next in the Settings tab (19) seek out the bezel Mode and change it to “Normal” (20)

You can now run a game audit, and run a game with a supporting bezel. PuckMan is a good first choice as it has 5 bezels and 2 IC’s.

Please be aware that not every single game has a unique bezel, but if one is not found then the default is used from the _Default Horizontal or Vertical folder.

Please also be aware that we have not created any of the artwork, we have just made it work with Hyperlaunch.

Enjoy.

My sincere thanks to both Potts43 and rfancella for making this project possible, and of course the Hyperspin community.

I would also like to thank horseyhorsey for "HLM Check" which I used to get the bezel coordinates and launch each game to test it. Great software.

Ron and gigapig I followed your guide and I am getting this problem where the bezel art doesn't match the game and jumpstiles mame.exe with no nag etc comes up in front of the bezel art but behind the game screen, but the game never goes fully fullscreen, as you can see in the pic I provided below, how do I remedy this? I followed all instructions and set visibility keys for bezel's. Obviously I have done something wrong. Thanks.

lol...

That looks good!! ;)

Um, ok.

First, check these settings: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?34755-MAME-Artwork-Bezel-Project&p=322055&viewfull=1#post322055

If it still doesn't work:

Please post your HyperLaunch log using code tags.

And post a screen of the path to where you put that bezel.

Like this please:

Ok Ron, I was in the process of posting an update with a new pic of where I am at currently, but just read your post after mine. I will look at it and implement the instructions you gave me but now I am getting this after enabling instructions card in my hyperlaunch global ini. Still do not get full screen but also i notice the actual gaming screen is tiny with all the bezels showing any way to change that? Sorry I will also look at your previous instructions first. Thanks.

Ok,

For that game (XMen Vs Street Fighter) that is the bezel.

The IC's are built into the bezel.

There should also be IC files in that folder also.

So, if you put a transparent bezel in that folder along with the existing one, you can use the "Next Bezel" key defined in HLHQ to switch to full screen.

Then hit your IC keys to get the IC files to show.

Thanks,

Ron

Ok, my only issue now is I am getting an error about 'qsound.bin needs rom redump' and I can still slightly see the mame cmdline screen, even when it's full screen but everything is much better since switching those settings to false, that you instructed me to. I posted my HL log in the previous post. Thanks for the replies and help so far.

How Do I get the bezel art from post #90 to appear and disappear with a press of a button? I also notice once the game starts up I only see the bezel art on the left and right side with the name of the fighters. I am just a tad bit confused on whats what?

The qsound thing sounds like your Roms are out of date or don't match the emulator version?

I also never noticed a cmd window, does that not happen with Mameuifx?

Now I am getting this with puckman how can I stretch the bezel out a little bit and not see the MAME cmdline screen?

3kE5YzR.jpg

@gigapig I am using jumpstiles modified MAME.exe version 158 (No nag hi score neo geo etc.) I also have the entire MAME .158 romset torrentzipped split set from PD along with the chd's.

@Ron I used Background - 16x9 black 19201080 (Potts43) background and both your bat files just so you know. I have a widescreen LG monitor that can do up to 1920x1080 resolution.

No, only MAME & MESS shows that window.

So what build of MAME should I be using not to see the cmdline window? It was fine with Xmen Vs Street Fighter after the settings you told me to alter but with puckman the MAME cmdline is still present. I'll take another look at the original post and make sure there isn't anything I forgot. Also thanks for the guide, your time so far and this whole MAME Bezel Project. Fantastic!

Like I said, I use mameuifx and I don't ever see that window. I looked into hiding the CLI window but couldn't find anything, only this thread but I would have thought it would have been fixed by now.

Mameuifx it is. Thanks gigapig.

Update: Thanks to gigapig my issue is now solved. I installed mameuifx and am now using jumpstiles excellent modified mameuifx.exe and no more mame cmdline window in the background. I have one final minor dilemma though, How Do I switch between these bezels at will? How should I set this in HyperLaunchHQ MAME settings? I want to switch between these two bezel formats at will (Don't mind the first image, I took it when I was still having the mame cmdline issue but it's fixed now. I do want the bezel design it displays in the pic.)

sMV5tXO.jpg

And this (Which you see in the pic, no longer displays the mame cmdline window, thanks to gigapig, letting me know to install mamauifx instead.)

Well Im trying to make a few bezels... I thought I would experiment a lil. Want to do some of the older ones with more of a feel for the old. Anyways, enough of that, i did a quick mock up to experiment with "Alcon"

Is there a way to bring the edges further to the bezel border to fit nice? Be nice to curve them to the border once im done. Just want to figure it out first. Heres what I mean.... the black edge between the bezel and the game looks too clinical, need to either mask or what I would like is to bring it to the edge?

Austin,

That looks great!!! Are the scanlines in the bezel or in MAME?

Thanks Ron. Just a quick test. The lines are in MAME with the HSL thingy. I followed the guide by you and Giga. I took the sizes for a vertical game from a default bezel. Just added my own art. But like I said, the game does not fit. The bezel ens with the lighter grey area, the black is the background??

Tryig to make it look like an actual Arcade screen... as then it suits the HSLHS thingy. Realistic with realistic if that makes sense?
