@AvarAlthough I do appreciate your awesome post, I would like to downplay it abit, by saying that what we do here is more inline with digital archaeology. we look for ancient relics and we restore them. so that it maybe build into an exposition or if you prefer a shrine. we are conservators and curators of this video game museum.

I would not want compare conservation with originality that, if you pardon the phrase , true artists put into their designs.

That's fair but I have seen originality too over the years. I know I'm certainly not original when it comes to art but some people definitely have a knack for it :D

Now i have an excuse to get a 4K TV, and no cab planned till end of the year ish so fingers crossed

4K will be only for artworks/video, etc. Games will still run at normal resolution . Think twice before you invest in 4K lol
I got 4K UHD 65" 3D TV but what to say never ever watched a single 4K movie lol

True, I think things will eventually get there but I think 6-12 months is a little too aggressive.

You all know that I focus on bezels, but a lot of my bezel work has focused on obscure games with no existing bezel and little to no source artwork. Some of the artwork samples out there for these games are just plan crap. I'm going to do some playing around with 4k conversions for some of mine, and try for that going forward, but no promises. :)

Well ... just my US$.02 ... but wouldn't move to vector formats like .svg make the screen resolution dependent stuff obsolete anyway?

Plus ... I sometimes wonder, why noone really tried to make a 3d like shader you need to use with 3d goggles that make you screen really look bubbly like a real CRT on a flat screen ... but that's just my bloody mind going crazy :)

@griffin518 I think the quality of your work is such that'll it'll still look fantastic when upscaled. 1080p scales up ok. It's more, for example, trying to scale a 400x200 wheel to 800x400 or 1600x800 that it starts to get nasty. More wanted to let people know all this so they keep their "raw" files for when they're natively supported :D

@EyMannMachHin There's definitely value in that approach and not to be a tease but several artists have been keeping vector versions of their themes for a while. That being said, vector formats do have some major drawback. The big one is that Vector files cannot easily be used to store extremely complex images where color information is paramount and may vary on a pixel-by-pixel basis. So while it can work great for arcade themes that might have a simple colour space, the effect isn't achievable on, say, a realistic redraw of a disc with a more complex image and pallette, an especially detailed wheel, or any sort of photo-realistic image in general.

Love the 3D shader idea haha I have a pair of red/cyans I use for Nintendo Virtual Boy.

@thatman84 IMO worry most about colour space. UHD DSR is just as good as native 4K, and better than 4K if the display you're viewing it on has superior colour space to that of the 4K display you'd be replacing it with. To boil down the frustrating snake-oil-esque TV business right now, the big things are colour space/temp with an emphasis on achieving perfect black levels, professional-grade calibration, and smoothness of the image in panning and in busy action scenes/games. As long as the screen-size to viewing distance ratio is correct, there are nil to minimal gains for 4K film/television because they're already effectively filmed at an infinite resolution, Additional detail at higher resolutions is only gleaned by sitting closer or increasing display size. That being said, there are finally some 4K TVs where the colour space/temp/blacklevels are way better than anything we've ever had.
