Cocktail cab themes

hey jeep will these themes work on a monitor that's mounted vertically? eg it's the only wheel in hyperspin on a vertical monitor.

Yup, this is actually how this theme set is to be used, since there is no rotational function built into HS.

no no dont' worry, aint' going no where. Yeah im working on cleaning everything up, it is taking a little while, currently fighting some weird ass stomach bug thats going around. Anyway, you can see any progress in my file, I'm just going to duplicate the HS file structure in my folder. Hopefully this should take any confusion out of where things go for any new users trying it out. Each file will have a readme giving any small details that might need to be known.

Anyway I'll keep working and ya'll updated as I go.

Thanks for the update. I took a look at the FTP this afternoon and saw that you had created the file folder structure. Congratulations once again. Looking forward to your updates.

I see in looking at the files in the FTP that there are a couple of themes that are for horizontal games (Mario Bros., Joust). These are great 2 player games that work well on a cocktail with the "cocktail mode" on where it splits the screen in half and shows two horizontal screens one for each player. Including them is a great idea in my opinion.

Does anyone know if there are some video snaps out there showing the cocktail mode on? These would be great because they would be vertical videos and fit the themes perfectly and also show how the split screen would look while playing the game. I messaged Circo about it a little while back but did not get a reply. Are these videos out there some where or is there someone that could record them? I think there is only a couple of games that fit this so it wouldn't be a lot to do.

Far as I know there aren't, was thinking about asking circo about it. Only for a few choice games, I do not want to get into the realm of adding any oddball game just because it's possible. I'm sure circo is busy as it is haha. Or if anyone else is handy with vid editing, that is one area where I severely lack in.

I started a thread over at Emumovies.com in the special request area called MAME Video Snaps showing Cocktail Mode. Circo replied and confirmed that he has not done any of these so far. He said it would require a huge undertaking. I think he might have thought we wanted this done for all MAME games, I replied telling him that so far I was only aware of 4 games that are horizontal that your theme could use video snaps showing game play in cocktail mode.

Can you confirm this? Are there any others I am missing or have over looked. I know there are a couple of other horizontal games in your theme but I think those ones would use the regular video and just show it vertically.

Maybe you could reply in the thread or reach out to Circo and explain that is only a handful of videos.

Thanks on starting that thread, i'll get in touch with him and fill in the blanks. Off the top of my head I think your right in your list, of just the 4 games. I will run through the themes later tonight and double check but it sounds right. The other's Asteroids, Hat Trick and Pong, those are oddballs. Actually Asteroids I did, not realizing it was a horizontal game since I only filtered by the term "cocktail". Otherwise I probably wouldn't have made the theme. Pong was just kindof for fun. Acutally both Pong and Hat Trick would technically be played roughly the same, one player at either side. Anyway i'll hit up Circo.

When you guys get a chance look over the ftp folder. Close to being done, still have to write up some readme.txt. There is an additional "Miscellaneous" file, I'm using this for any other additional artwork that I've made at some point, some may not be quite official to the set. There is a templates folder that I put a blank template for both the table and wheel. I tried to keep the table template as straight forward as possible. Feel free to take a look and make sure it all makes sense. Pretty close to buttoning this up!

After I told Circo that there were only 4 that I knew of he seemed much more onboard to making them. I think he thought we needed them for all horizontal games. Double check and see if those 4 are the only ones we need then shoot him a PM and let him know. I think that would be the best route.

I did find a couple of things when looking at the FTP files.

1. Asteroids - you have a theme, but no wheel, background or artwork 4 files.

2. Dangun Fevron - you have a theme, but no wheel, background or artwork 4 files.

3. Raiden III - no wheel image

4. Raiden IV - no wheel image

5. Star Jacker - no wheel image

I also have a couple of questions. For the horizontal games like Asteroids, Hat Trick and Pong, is there a way to make the video play horizotnally in the theme (so the the top of the video in on the left side). I think this would look good, especially for Hat Trick and Pong because then it would represent how the game actually looks when playing it on the cabinet.

I asked before and I think you said you would be willing to do it. Can you create a theme/template that is for horizontal games on the cabinet. Probably exactly like the one you have created for vertical games, but instead have the monitor window rotated so that it would be horizontal on the table when looking at it. This would allow anyone who wanted to have a default theme they could use to place a horizontal game in the theme list and not have to have the video squished. Just rename this theme xxx.zip to match whatever game they wanted. I myself would like to use it for Tapper, which is a horizontal game and was a very popular cocktail that was put in bars. This way I could add it easy with a default theme and then over time, hopefully use the template to create some good artwork for it. I have included a picture to give you an idea of what I would like to see in a template\theme. Just a plain black table top with a horizontal window cut out for a horiztonal video, a control panel with a joystick and 3 buttons and a plain glass top. That way it could be used for any horizontal game and people could edit it to make an individual theme.

you are correct about what you've noticed, 3 of those wheels are in sorphs set which i've had to redo allot of. Not sure how but allot of his wheels ended up just a pixel or two off in placement or size, so i'm redoing those, they will be up soon. StarJacker i guess i missed that one, thanks. And Asteroids I had initially removed from the folder since it was horizontal, and was going to have a horizontal folder, but then scratched that and said F it, everything gets separated out in the xml anyway, so I'll make sure it's back up there n oworries

I will take a look at the video stuff, I think it's doable, thought i did that for hattrick already. sure we can do something.

and yes you were correct in me coming up with some type of a "horizontal" default.

Once again all I can say is that you are the man. Great work on all of this. I will try to check Hat Trick and see how the video displays. Rotating the video for it and Pong would be great. I would think that it would be just undoing how you rotated it in the first place but what do I know about creating awesome themes.

I checked today and currently Asteroids, Hat Trick and Pong show the video rotated like the rest of the theme within the vertical display area. So it is showing the game in its normal horizontal view but squished into the vertical window.

I think it would look better for Hat Trick and Pong if they showed the video in its horizontal position but not rotated to fit the vertical window without being squished. That way they would show how they are to be played on the cocktail cabinet.

As far as Asteroids, you could do the same thing but it really isn't a 2 player heads up game like Hat Trick or Pong that lend themselves to playing horizontally on a vertical cocktail cabinet. It's also not a heads up horizontal game that you could play in "cocktail mode" like Joust or Mario Bros.

It might be best to use your forth coming horizontal template and make Asteroids your only horizontal game showing off what can be done with the template. Hopefully others, myself included, will make some themes for other horizontal games that were often in cocktail cabinets.

What a contribution and the definitive set for the cocktail I plan on building, possibly this fall once my sons go to college. Thanks for all this work. sorry not much done, this damn sequester is screwing things up at work so been a little pre-occupied. As Cmoses has seen most of the shmups aren't quite uploaded, i'm re-doing the wheels due to slight size differences (damn OCD) no biggie, just getting some art for SORHP, (i know still have to get you the list), and hopefully tonight i'll send you (cmoses) what I did for a default horizontal theme and see if that'll work for you.

Just a thought, since Asteroids doesn't really fall into either catagory, that one may get dropped into the miscellaneous folder, not really sure.

I guess I notice this before but didn't really think about it. It seems like you did two wheel images for most of the themes, but I don't see them anywhere. There's a wheel image with just a single colored background and then there is usually one that incorporates part of the theme. Are those extra wheels out there somewhere? There are a few bonus wheels that I really like an would probably use.

I wanted to make a contribution to this amazing set of themes by jeepguy81. I was going through some cocktail pictures I have been collecting for theme ideas and ran across a picture for Space Invaders II. This is not the same game as Space Invaders Part II which was done by Taito. Space Invaders II by Midway appears to have only been made as a cocktail cabinet. It offers the ability for 2 players to play at the same time against the Space Invaders and each other. Players have bases at each end of the cocktail cabinet and the Invaders are in the middle. You can shoot at them and the other player. Here is the link to the KLOV page on Space Invaders II:

The cocktail table for Space Invaders II is very similar to the the Midway version of Space Invaders that jeepguy81 had already made a theme for. The cocktail overlay graphics are slightly different than the ones for regular Space Invaders. I took jeepguy81's original Space Invaders theme and found the corresponding different graphics and replaced them. So this is more of a tweak, then a major change. I also created a new wheel for it as well. Here is a picture of the cocktail cabinet and the theme I made.
