Well I thought I would help out a little bit. Seeing as Im currently making a HS setup from scratch it wouldnt take much to make a Tutorial for the systems I setup along the way. However, what software is best for this??

Screen shots or video?

I use Picpick for screenshots and bandicam for video. You can also try out Camstudio which is free.

Afterburner also has video capture.

Something extremely quick and simple, when your doing tutorials, would be to use Screenr - www.screenr.com. It's an online screencapture system and it get's the job done. No reason to install any software.

Another solution could be OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) - www.obsproject.com. Great performance, lots of options to play around with and it's completely free.

nvidia's shadowplay allows to record the desktop too and is "free" (provided you have a compatible nvidia card that is)

Do any of those allow me to:

1. Talk whilst I record (I hate people who use notepad to do tutorials... it just kills me!)?

2. Record everything on screen... as in I load up the game and it still records whats going on, not just leaving me with a black screen?

Also another question related to this. I know that links to ROMS are not permitted here. However if I made a link to a zip with an Emu in it, is that permitted? Obviously I would still give links to the original website, downloads etc. Im just going to try and make this 100% hassle free.

Many thanks guys... Oh and Gigga, for Vid tutorials, I must say yours are the most detailed and well explained ones I have ever seen. Thanks for those, they still help me now hehehe. Thanks for the replies guys!!!

I use Camtasia which would probably support anything you want to do with it except capturing full screen games.

if you just want a generic screen capture for youtube use camtasia studio and the tech smith capture codec, unlike fraps, you will not have a 1 minute 4 GIG!!! video

if you wan't to make videos for use in hyperspin use Fraps, (emumovies only takes videos that are 60 FPS) but again you will have an uncompressed AVi file.

I recomend Hypercam 3.5 or above

http://download.cnet.com/HyperCam/3000-13633_4-75000937.html

it has all the features of Camtasia

unlike Camtasia it has the quality capture of Fraps (record videos at 60 FPS), and unlike Fraps you can use the Techsmith Capture Codec to compress the 1 minute 4 Gig video into a 100MB or less depending on the video content.

my video capture settings

I just use the windows snipping tool for images.

Last I checked Camtasia does TCC and 60fps. What I love about Camtasia is the auto upload to YouTube.

must be something I'm missing; I tried camtasia studio 8, the highest frame rate capture option I was given was 30

I'm not sure what you mean by "showing the games played"

Sorry, even though Im English, my England is terrible hehehe, I think its due to the fact im scouse. I meant that if I load a game up, will it still record that game on the screen or just show it as black?

Just wanted to bump this as I just tried out OBS recording software which is completely free btw.....it is actually better than Action which I paid quite a bit for....I'm a little peeved.

OBS barely takes up any cpu resources. I'm doing game vids for emumovies right now on PCSX2 and Mirillis was causing all sorts of jumpy movies with frame rate drops, cut out sound, etc, no matter the quality settings I was using.

OBS recorded PS2 @ 60fps with barely any slowdown at high bitrates so, people should def. give OBS a whirl first.

OBS is alright except that as a streamer, I find that it simply cannot record a vast number of emulators out there. I use Xsplit personally.

FRAPS is the only program I'd recommend for Emumovies no matter what console you're recording. Very rarely do I use anything else unless necessary. It has the best uncompressed video quality if you want color accuracy and pixel sharpness. There's a reason those files are so massive :P Then encode with x264 lossless in Virtual Dub and you'll get perfect footage ready for finalizing into snaps.

I thought file size was always an issue with Fraps, is that true or do you compress it after capture?

Compression is the very last step in making videos. You want to work with raw video and when everything is complete then you compress.
